We are toast since we can’t replace our politicians with AI because then we will destroy our selfies and if we doesn’t implement AI we can never get a system that puts human welfare in front of profit and personal gain to deal with pandemics and nukes! But in the other hand we have already screwed the climate so much that it probably doesn’t matter anyway.👻 Only way to change it is to put our teenagers and young adults in charge!!!

30 years ago I realized how cheap biological weapons were compared to nuclear, making them eventually a bigger threat, if that is even possible. I am old and witnessed the best of times, but each year seems worse than the one before. So sad for this generation, children who will never know the freedoms I enjoyed. It is enough to make me pray again, and yes, I literally cry for you all.
As a granny of three, I am praying and praying and praying. Even the selfishness and materialism I see among my adult children, frightens me. Saying that, I would not consider them materialistic in comparison to most Westerners. However, personally, born in 1957, I am astounded on a daily basis, especially by selfishness.

@Zia RDS If you’re in your twenties it’s the perfect time for you to read this: www.ishmael.org/daniel-quinn/essays/the-new-renaissance/ It’s also available in book format. And bare in mind that this is only the backdrop of the life you are the protagonist of. Even if you get to be a world leader at one point, your friends, your family, and all of your experiences are what will determine the richness of your own life. So deepen those by deepening in those (wherever possible, because one of the most important things in life is not to insist in your delving roots growing where they are blocked from doing so). So live with intensity and dare. The world despite all of the environmental destruction continues to be astonishingly beautiful. At my 40's closer to 50's I can assure you that every day can matter, and we should strive for making every one of them do so. That’s the recipe for thriving. For over twenty years in my life every year has been better than the previous one, and it only seems that this trend is likely to continue despite many failed projects and relationships, the passing of close relatives and friends. There is plenty of worth awaiting for you to incite it. It is always a wonderful time to be alive in this resoundingly gorgeous biosphere! Go forth, and maybe you’ll get to change something or even everything. You’ll only know by letting yourself and your life surprise you...
"My suggestion was quite simple: Put that needed code number in a little capsule, and then implant that capsule right next to the heart of a volunteer. The volunteer would carry with him a big, heavy butcher knife as he accompanied the President. If ever the President wanted to fire nuclear weapons, the only way he could do so would be for him first, with his own hands, to kill one human being. The President says, "George, I'm sorry but tens of millions must die." He has to look at someone and realize what death is-what an innocent death is. Blood on the White House carpet. It's reality brought home." "When I suggested this to friends in the Pentagon they said, "My God, that's terrible. Having to kill someone would distort the President's judgment. He might never push the button."" - Roger Fisher, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, March 1981
This has allready been proposed in the states once. But it was shut down because it would be unethical for the president to kill a person... yeah... I think it was 99% invicible that had a pice on this a few years ago.

"...leaving survivors unable to rebuild modern society." If I survived what makes you think I would want to rebuild modern society? Modern society is how we ended up in this mess. Nah, I would do things a little different.
You would have to build differently. So many easy to gain resources are gone. The stuff left require extreme methods, fracking or open pit mines, to obtain them. But we likely wouldn't have the operational infrastructure in place to obtain any meaningful quantities to rebuild once the situation stabilized and we regained our wits.
I have a feeling you would not rebuild at all and think that some hippy culture is the way to go an inefficient bunch of lazy bums doing nothing except screwing their own children
I've often lamented that I'm getting old in the last few weeks (late 20s), but having watched this video, I suddenly wish I were much, much, much older...
I'm around 60, and I too, wish I were much, much older. I'm just happy now that the way life unfolded for me has left me without children. As I watch these existential threats unfold - many of which we expected to be centuries away when I was young - although the nuclear threat is older than I am, I count it as lucky that I'm not lamenting having put someone else into the dystopian future I see.
@UCy5ngnLJECUt-V_OZPlawNg No. You live as if you're in your 90s. If it comes out better than you expect, you're thrilled. If you have hope, you will be disappointed. You cannot disappoint a pessimist. Just pleasantly surprise us sometimes.

@Captain Obvious Why be scared? For the very reason that you will live though it. Feeling fear is natural letting it control your life is not. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers. Remember, 74 million very gullible people still believed in Trump in 2020, and still do.
It's weird but even though I'm living my life regularly and relatively carelessly, I always know somewhere in the back of my mind that the dire situation humanity is in right now is close to impossible to fix without a very impropable, unrealistic change in attitude from everyone who has any power on Earth.
The only way that happens is with a near extinction event. Something that harms a considerable amount of the population. An accidental nuclear disaster, a pandemic virus or a giant asteroid. People don't seem to like to prepare, they like to react.
I agree wholeheartedly. It’s hard to imagine what could possibly bring about such a change other than a global catastrophe. We tend to learn not to stick our hand in the fire by first sticking our hand in the fire.
This is a great analogy. I find it baffling that while the analogy makes it easier to picture, the real situation isn't any less stupid than the analogy
First time I have seen that analogy but it captures perfectly the insanity of the "mutually assured destruction" (MAD) era. Not as if it has completely gone away .. ..
This is how stupid it is and yet they have some security? Ego? I call it the most ignorant thing with regards to nuke and to mess around with deadly viruses! Show me any wonderful advances that they have made to protect us from these viruses to even justify messing with them?
This is beautifully done to show 3 very complex issues that we must come together as humans to address on an ongoing basis, this is critical for all of us.
Yeah, we must. But history has shown consistently that humans just cannot "come together". Can't even agree on which version of the same believed religion is the "right" one, which line on a map is the right border between nations. Even recent history (with all our ability to document and preserve it) is contested, not only to it's accuracy, but even if the event really happened.

@ I don't think COVID was a purposely created bioweapon. At most I think it was a simple gain-of-function virus that accidentally leaked from a lab. You need to keep in mind that China has a terrible safety record when it comes to serious industrial accidents, and are notorious for covering up their mistakes. COVID-19 is pretty bad as a bioweapon, it's not very lethal, nor is it very frail when exposed to the environment. A good bioweapon is a disease that is extremely lethal but dies quickly when left out in the open. That way a population gets taken out, the virus dies soon after and the area is invaded by the waring nation, thus not exposing its soldiers to the pathogen. COVID was at most an accidental release due to the reckless and careless attitude by Chinese authorities when dealing with biosecurity.

So deepen those by deepening in those (wherever possible, because one of the most important things in life is not to insist in your delving roots growing where they are blocked from doing so).
So live with intensity and dare. The world despite all of the environmental destruction continues to be astonishingly beautiful. It's reality brought home."

We cannot move forward until we can remove money from politics. Some Corporations have gained power greater than nations & have a vested interest in the status quo.
Exactly! Why did Congress decide Corporations have same rights as people?
You don't understand the foundation of human society. Money is just a measurement mechanism that a society uses to determine relative value among disparate goods and services. A society organizes itself by means of political systems that involve the trade among these goods and services. What I think we really need is people who govern with honesty and integrity rather than personal self interests
@@kayakMike1000
That's the problem right their. Honesty and integrity will mean different things, to different individuals at different times and during different events.
But even using it simply, colloquially, these qualities appear to be rare commodities and seemingly becoming rarer.
It could be bias, age or simply wearing Rose Tinted Spectacles, but people really did seem to be more honest and have integrity.
I remember my Gran had been out doing some shopping, when she got home she realised the Butcher, or someone had wrong changed her, giving her too much change. It had begun raining again, but she wouldn't even wait. She went and grabbed her mac and one of those see through thin plastic rainhood popular in the Sixties, and she marched right on back, to square up with them.
I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up having a bloody apologising match too, each attempting to be more sorry than the other.
That attitude was far from rare then. But then most people knew each other and more community spirit existed.

The more information the AI has of you the better chances you have that it will incorporate your philosophies into its intelligence. You'll still be dead but at least some of your ideas will live on. In a way it's a lot like having kids.
We need to stop seeing things in a short sighted manner and start working together. Instead of fighting against each other, which will be our undoing, we must band together to beat all enemies of humanity.
There can be no good if there is no evil. What will we fight when there are no more enemies? How can we be strong if there is no struggle? Balance is key to perpetuity.
In some ways we each are enemies of humanity. Only seeing the enemy in others avoids facing the need to change ourselves.

"Any AI smart enough to pass a Turing test is smart enough to know to fail it." --Ian McDonald
lol cute. However in practice, passing the Turing test is not that high a bar: the average human can be fooled pretty easily when all is said and done!! It would take an AI being with a LOT more raw intelligence than is necessary to simply pass the Turing test, to realize that it might be in its best interest to deliberately fail it.
"Anything Ian says has to be taken with a pinch of salt." - Peter Giles
Considering the Turing test is essentially a measure of how well a machine can deceive, that makes sense.
wishful thinking
Machines are fair and follow the laws they are given. Maybe a human not designing the ai might be a good thing overall.

Humanity deserves whatever it gets. 😔 We are horrible Monsters.
What if humanity gets something nice, would we deserve that too?
I think "horrible" is a very small percentage. Unfortunately, that's where most of our 'leaders' come from.
You must be commenting with experience. Real humans work everyday to make this a better place with real balance, you are obviously not familiar with this.
I'm with you on that Shannon. We, collectively, as the human race, are horrible monsters. Millennia of greed, avarice, self-interest and war to ensure it all pretty much defines who we are as a people. On an individual level that may not be true but the few exceptions don't offset the vast swathes. Few of us are prepared to really look ourselves in the eye and acknowledge what we are really like as people. And even fewer prepared to do anything about it.
Exactly right, the planet would do just fine without the cancer that is humanity spreading across it destroying everything in its path. What I find most staggering is how blind people are to the damage we do every single day to the planet.

I have moved past sounding the alarm to family and friends and I have retired, bought property in a remote self-sustaining area and I am building my own survivability lifestyle to mitigate the risks as much as one can.
