I love how he begins the song with the question of why he took his son away but then ends with him saying thank you to God for all the blessings he gained while his son was alive. It's like when Job said, God gave, and the Lord taketh away, blessed is the name of the Lord(Job 1:21).
This lament and prayer by Tobymac is his way to talk about his feelings about his son's death. As someone who is Tobymac's age, and I also lost a son, I can tell you he did it quite eloquently in his own way. Although this song comes out of a tragedy, isn't it amazing how God can take a tragedy and turn it into something beautiful. How did He make it beautiful? Just listen to your reaction. Look at how it made you feel about your family and friends. We need to appreciate them while they are here with us, tell them we love and care for them, and not wait until they are gone. Beauty out of ashes...God can take what is meant for evil, and turn it into something good. Praise God for His love and mercy.

The music is his emotions. It HAD to be like that. You can hear his pain in the "beat". It's not production heavy, it's his heart spilling out all over the screen, all in the lyrics and music. It feels raw and real to me. This is the reaction of a 54 year old grandmother that has been a fan of TobyMac since his DC Talk days in the late 80's.

I have a few thoughts that are not directed at anyone in particular, but just to speak to the subject. In my humble opinion, I don't see how it's possible to critique a song of an artist who is expressing his intense grief... his feelings in his own style. It's so personal. I think it's beautiful and he has to be incredibly strong to sing or even talk about this right after it happened. As a Mom his age with a son Tru's age, it would be devastating to lose a child. You never heal from something like that... you learn to live with the relentless grief. I saw him sing this song the first weekend back on the road after Tru's death, and you could tell his feelings were still very raw. The arena was flooded with emotion because of everyone's concern and grief for Toby and his family - it was heavy and palatable. I can't listen to this song without crying. By the way, the 21 Years video was recorded with only an iPhone and a flashlight in an open field standing near a very tall tree in the middle of thunder and lightning, and only 2 people with him.
I agree that I wondered if this song would be more of a ballad at first but when I listened to it, it wasn't as mellow as I thought it would be and this song has a really good sound. Also, you got to love the lyrics for sure! Really sweet and tear jerking particularly the second verse.
I’ll be 39 in couple months, & have one baby boy who is 21 months old. I was crying when the beat started, but I knew the story & been following Toby since his DC Talk days in early 90’s. I’ve seen him one time with my lil sister in 2014, just a month or 2 fresh outta rehab due to my opiate addiction fed on by my back problems. Been off of em since July 11th 2014, so I can feel his pain as a father, but also feel the pain of this song from the drug addiction side. God Bless Tru, God Bless Toby & his family. 💔
Even as a mother that still has her son here, this song is such a great reminder that our children are just a loan. We do the best we can to love and teach them. Ultimately, they belong to God. Heartbreaking but a much needed song.

As someone who has suffered with addiction this song hits home so hard, I’ve had too many people pass from this addiction and honestly it’s so sad to watch. I totally agreed. I forgot to mention it in the video but in September when the remix project released, I compared the two albums and decided that I liked the original better. It's not a terrible album but it could have been better.

There are a lot of little things and big things in the video that are references and symbols. The lyrics were beautiful. I truly feel this song and can almost tap into how Toby is feelings. All my prayers for him and his family.

Addiction is a disease like any other disease. God doesn't take your saving grace away b/c you get sick. He was battling a disease & Truett loved God deeply. If you knew him & were close friends or family w/him you'd never question it. God doesn't strip your grace away if you are sick. Like any other child he was finding his way in life & God doesn't cut His children off just b/c they stumble or fall or battle disease. Truett was still in Jesus, just like when you tell a lie, lust after a woman/man walking by or on tv, bear false witness or gossip against someone, don't speak w/fruit of the spirit, take something not yours or have unChrist like thoughts, you're still a Christian & don't get your grace taken away everytime you stumble. If that was the case, none of would make it to Heaven ever. We are saved by grace, not by works but by faith in Him.
I liked your video.. You're right about praising the Lord when good & bad things happen. It is very hard to deal with all the things that happen (especially loss of loves ones) & thats why there are so many blaming & being angry with the Lord. We just have to be happy that those we love & ourselves are around this day & be happy, find joy & always give praise to the Lord..
