The Daniel’s watch is unreal. It’s one of the watches featured in his watchmaking book. His book has resulted in some of the worlds greatest independent watchmakers who have learned from it, and he invented the double escapement which has become the de facto standard in so many watches. It’s priceless, and should be in a museum.
I would have cried if I had the Daniel's pocket watch in my hands... and I must admit that I am very happy for you that you had it in hands, well deserved Marc-André !!!
IMHO the Daniels grand complication pocket watch should be either displayed at a museum or sold for over $10M, with at least half of the funds supporting new watchmakers/watchmaking schools.
Wow! Thanks for the video. That Daniel’s pocket watch is just in a different league when it comes to aesthetics, not to mention the accolade that virtually every part is built from scratch! So nice to see Vacheron not be afraid of doing a full restoration and rebuild on a watch. You wouldn’t necessarily think an old, magnificent building that is covered in grime, diesel soot, and half-eroded sculptures should be left alone but in horology (imo) too many wonderful vintage watches just look plain tatty and unappealing because of this obsessive culture of thinking that a decayed, damaged dial is always better than a beautifully restored one. Common sense wins over in this case.
What an incredible collection, of both VC and the genuine haute Daniels timepieces. I am in sheer awe seeing these fine watches, and you are a lucky person to see and handle them all Marc. Thank you so much for creating this (part 1) video, and many of us eagerly await the second part!
I dont get to watch your videos as much as I would like. As always they are the Ultimate. The subject ,your guest, the production, absolutely Fabulous!!!!!!
Is it ok if I swear? What a FU***NG genius. Genius is an overused word today but Daniels really was a true genius. Watch on RUclips his lecture to the New York Horological Society to truly appreciate his genius, not only as a watchmaker but as a wider man. By the way, he also built his own cars.
@@watchestv-com 'One of the most'? Name me one greater. Come on....no contest. Philippe Dufour? (for example). He never invented anything and he outsources everything apart from the movement. No contest. If Daniels had worked out of Switzerland and had put 'Swiss' on his dials he would be considered alongside Breguet. Swiss snobbery. But weirdly, England is the home of watchmaking, not Switzerland. Switzerland is only the home of mass-produced watches.
I can see if i were a rich person, rather then buying a painting or what ever, that would be the watch I'd want. Also Daniels among all those achievements, also made some of the most stylish watches, even with time it remains stylish.
Great video! I agree that George Daniels is one of the greatest watchmakers of the 20th century; however, stating that he was the greatest is mere speculative hyperbole. To begin with, there were several great watchmakers in the 20th century. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to objectively determine who was the greatest.
Does anyone know why the balance wheel looks like it’s not moving when he actuated the minute repeater? Is that frame rate trickery or is it somehow a totally separate mechanism?

In a way it's sad that Mr Daniels' own watch will probably go into a private collection instead of being bought by the British government to be displayed for the public to see. I suppose that at least it will be held in a very secure setting.
Imagine that this George Daniels watch is worth far less than many footballers, who are of course a finite and depreciating asset. Which would you prefer? We live in a weird world... And then this bald guy presents a fairly basic Vacheron chronograph as though it is the Holy Grail :) The George Daniels watch is on another planet compared to this Vacheron. And the Vacheron even has a retailer co-signature (not good - no one cares about Turler, a bygone age jeweler). To explain, back in the day, people valued their watches/jewelry as much by the jeweler that retailed them as the brand itself. Which is why watchmakers struck deals with famous jewelers. Today that would be strange. Today if you buy a Rolex, for instance, you do not care about the retailer you buy it from - Watches of Switzerland, an airport, from the Dubai mall etc, it doesn't matter; you only care that you are buying an authentic new Rolex. You cannot imagine, for instance, a Rolex GMT Pepsi with 'Watches of Switzerland' also on the dial. I find myself smiling and almost laughing. It would of course completely devalue the watch. Who you buy from has decreased in 'value'. It does not matter, as long as you are sure that the watch is authentic. So.... I love the Vacheron gold chronograph but the Turler signage actually devalues the watch. But this dude, because he is invested, is trying to add value to the Turler signage. Over and out.
I have a great working 1926 South Bend 19 jewels 4 temp settings glows in the dark. Push winder knob down to open face player. 2 Dials. Anybody wanna buy it?

Yes, it should definitely sit in the OMEGA Museum!
the UK government failed in its duty to prevent culturally valuable artworks leaving the country.
The George Daniels' pieces is just outclassed everything. The future owner would certainly be proud, and rightly so.
And it can only be a serious and passionate connoisseur (ok, a pretty wealthy one...).
Should be in a museum, imo, since it is a part of the history of horology.

those VC's are amazing.. what a history.. The father position of the holy trinity watch brands.
Beautiful watches. That Daniel's pocket watch is breathtaking.
😮 wow! Thanks for showing us.
daniels' watchmaking book is a work of art
I didn't think I would love this channel so much

The greatest of the modern era.

Nice job thank you for the vid
George Daniels is a legend. And his watches show that.
It's just ridiculously beautiful! It's now on my "My wife will divorce me if I think too much about it" list, next to the Datograph and an F.P Journe.
Wow amazing timepieces👏
Truly remarkable !
Chime sounds so good out of an open case

Many thanks!
Outstanding timepiece the personal watch of Daniels.
That’s an amazing timepiece
George Daniels was very interesting guy. His life story was very interesting. And his watches are amazing.
I don't think George Daniel's pocket watch should be sold, I think it should be in a museum for all to see the work of the greatest watchmaker !
I'm assuming his daughter sold it maybe she needed the money.
Masterpiece; Augmented understatement.

Yes, that's a good comment, but he's for sure part of the club of the most prominent ones!
How that beautiful time piece can be worth a mere 1.5 m and a mass produced Rolex sell for ten times more just defies believe!
It reflects our times and the obsession with celebrities rather than substance. A sad state of affairs indeed.
There's indeed a bit of that...
@@jayremi4384
Well said Sir.
I think it will sell for a lot more than the 1.5 they are opening up at. This is like the Mona Lisa of watches.
@@noelr9376 lovely watch, but i'd rather have the space traveler.
So Mr Daniels don’t fancy Patek Philippe.. what a surprise
Wonder if the Stern family will try to acquire some of these pieces for their Patek museum as these are of such historical/horological significance.
Does anyone know why the balance wheel looks like it’s not moving when he actuated the minute repeater? Is that frame rate trickery or is it somehow a totally separate mechanism?
At around 2 min mark, the watch is clearly ticking. Could someone tell me why the date indicator appears to be stuck between 24 and 25?
GD god of watch making.

❤ Greatest of Time ☝️
How much did it go for?
Can't see it here, so the Daniels pocket watch made $2.4m
Minute repeaters are my favorite complication
minute repeaters are great, but I'd rather have a perpetual calendar

oh george
They should have shown the VC first or before the Daniels, it looked pretty ordinary in comparison
Breguet must be upset that a replica version is more valuable than the real thing.....
Dear You are really lucky
you can touch and feel
But I can't
I feel jealous
Are you sure he never went to a watchmaker school?
I think he actually did. The first school in which he was enrolled cancelled the course but another was found by his father, as I recall.
Respectful silence - hahaha so true! #Perpetual
