  • If you’ve been with us since the beginning (and even if you haven’t), there’s a good chance you know how much we love diving into the details and subtleties of quality snare sound. From the ruler method to single lug adjustments, sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference. Today we’re experimenting with the capabilities of a snare reso head that was designed for the discerning ears of the orchestral percussionist. Who says you can’t use orchestral heads for drum set snares?

I just got done restoring a 1964 Supraphonic. I wanted to put Ludwig heads on it, but nowadays it’s hard to get those heads, but they are obtainable. Back in the day it didn’t matter what snare brand you had, most used the Ludwig snare side head for its film, its thickness, its collar design. For the least amount of collar the Remo marching snare side head is an excellent choice. For an overall line of snare heads that are closest to the Ludwig design is the Evans line. Especially the Evans 200 clear and the Evans orchestral. Also Ludwig L-1963 reissue ‘63 snare wires are the wires to use for a vintage Ludwig vibe. Keep these great videos coming Cody, you always do a great job! 🥁

The Tony Cirone solo was beautiful! 🥁
I play sort of modern classical via experimental free improv. I love snare work. I love resonant concert drum tunings/touch. I practice a lot of dense work, but play sparingly in most performances and rehearsals. Accenting the ensemble is my main role. Providing subtle support with textures is the rest. I'm there for when the horns need to take a breath or to rumble a lower atmosphere for them to explore.
I'll see what I can do in 2023 to be supportive of the value SLAD creates for me online. I love the deep dive shop talk about these instruments.

For a community concert band, I bought a Pearl Concert Snare with cable wires and love how dry those sounded. I see Grover Percussion sells a "Jazz Dark" which appear like guitar strings which might be of interest to anyone wanting a change in sound. Thanks for all the great drum content.

One of the other snare nerds (in the best possible sense), Rick Dior, would say: needs a little bit of dampening. The overtone of the batter head is very prominent. But on the other hand, I never thought about using orchestral snare resos. Now I‘ll try. Thanks for this idea.

The snare drum does sound very contained when playing the snare with a symphony, but out in front the room makes it sound very live. the drum needs a quick response, very articulate, but not choked. A small cloth seems to work best to get rid of a small amount of overtones.

I'd like to think this video is a result of me bringing up this snare side head on your reso coated video comments. ;) just got this head a few days ago for one of my snares, and I really enjoyed the new subtleties. I also bought an evans 500 and liked it as well. A video going through the different reso head thicknesses would be great!

by chance I happened on a Yamaha 9 series from the early 80s with the super sensitive parallel throwoff, and for any unplugged gigs that drum with a concert head really sends articulation to the back of the room.

I use the 200 version for all my orchestral playing and customers. I’ve been wanting to try this on some of my drum set snares, but I’ve been happy with the sound I currently have.
I’ve used the Puresound concert snare wires. They’re missing the mark for orchestral playing, in my opinion. I prefer the cable (or mixes) on those.
And then there is using an orchestral snare on a drumset. It works! Just depends on the gig and what snares are on the drum.

You have great information that is very educational even for us older drummers that are set in our ways,I mean those of us in our 60,s and still very active playing regularly.would you consider some thing way off topic, that will affect us drummers in the long run,and that is nutrition,as I'm aging and staying very active playing, the more I believe it can play a big part on our playing longevity, keep up your great information.

Thanks for the kind words, Arturo! We generally stay focused on topics that we're either experts in or have the opportunity to address in a way that's unique to our experience. Neither of us has any formal background in nutrition, not to mention how it relates to drumming, so we're probably not the best channel to cover a topic like this right now.

First and best reso head I ever used on my 14x7 cast aluminum was an orchestral 200. Such an incredible sound! Unfortunately I was using S Hoops at the time and it didn’t play nice with the reso at tension and the s hoop rubbed the reso until it broke.
I’d like to try it again with die casts.

  • @C.D.Percussion

Nice! I was surprised how much using brass snare wires does for the sensitivity and "warmth", so that's definitely option worth checking out i my opinion.
As a classical percussionist I have seen a lot of old Ludwigs used for orchestral and solo snare drums. Often with a thinner snares like a 14 strand. The BIG difference is how much extra sensitivity we want in that p-pppp range. Basically a good orchestral snare will buzz from you just thinking about hitting it =P Something that would be a nightmare for a studio recording.

I wonder if you guys would consider a video on strings vs plastic strips vs ribbons to attach snares. I recently posted a picture of a snare drum on a drum mod site. Several drummers said they prefer string and that there is a noticeable difference in the sound and strings limited buzz and reduced muffling of the snare side head.

Perhaps the most applicable Hybrid/Crossover wires units that will allow one to transform a "Drum Set" snare into a more Concert sounding drum are the Grover 14SX and 14CX units. These aren't cheap but they can bridge the gap for students and other's seeking to emulate the sound of a dedicated drum. Keep in mind that until the late 90's/early 2000's a Concert Drum really did NOT exist, all snare drums were essentially the same and it was primarily the snare elements, head choices and tensioning that moved you from one "World" to the other; Arthur Press with the Boston Symphony famously played a modified Fibes SFT snare drum...so did Buddy! 😉
