lol during the music video: Mikey: **gets shot** Gee: NO, MIKEY, NOOOOO behind the scenes of The Ghost of You: Gee:Hahaha, you got shot. Mikey:My favorite part was getting shot. Gee: **looks mad** oH, rEAlLY?
one interesting thing is that through the rest of the album we get a sense that he wasn't very well liked. like in Dead! theres the line "no one ever had much nice to say I think they never liked you anyway" and in "disenchanted" "I spent my highschool career spit on and shoved to agree. so maybe in WTTBP the line about his memory carrying on is more limited. It seemed like the only one we hear of who likes/loves him still is his mother which is shown in the song "Mama" You should definitely do the rest of the black parade album tho! Amazing work!
MDG tv but I think that even his mother denies him at the end of the song 《She said, "You ain't no son of mine for what you've done. They're gonna find a place for you and just you mind your manners when you go. And when you go, don't return to me, my love.》 So yeah, either this boy was really unloved or he thinks that and that might have to be with the part of fight the haters/inner demons/stuff. idk
I just think that bands like these have so much more depth then they are credited and they're lyrics aren't always as negative as most people make it out to be . This subculture is so misunderstood and for you to make videos like these help to prove what they really are saying and not just the loud screaming that everyone else hears
I mean, I guess you could say that WTTBP is our "theme song" but a lot of times people look at more then just the lyrics of that song. WTTBP is by far the most famous My Chem song and was on their last album before the band took a break and inevitably changed their entire style. Their drummer Bob Bryar left the band after the break and even though the music was exceptional (it is in fact my favorite album of theirs and I suggest analyzing The Kids From Yesterday) it wasn't the same violent, depression/death influenced music. All the while Gerard had been battling mental health issues as well as alcoholism after a suicide attempt while touring with Helena and this album shows real mental stability for him. But his old habits caught up with him and the band broke up. What WTTBP symbolizes for our subculture is, My Chem and everything emo really. It symbolizes them breaking up it symbolizes that single song that was so good, it hit pop radios and set everything on fire with "that emo band My Chemical Romance." It symbolizes how that's gone now. That single G note in the beginning is enough to make a lot of people reminisce on the band and can make some even cry. It really is our theme song but that single G not is a reminder that we can stick together and that this is what we stand for. We are the living black parade.
Except it’s not his fondest memory, it’s his worst memory but most defining. He didn’t go to a “parade” with his father. The “parade” is his fathers funeral. The whole song is about carrying on after his fathers death while holding on to the memory of his father and what he thinks his dad would want him to be through the example his mother “the weary widow marching on” sets. And how if he can survive the tragedy of his dad dying of cancer, then he can survive anything, perhaps even the “phantom” or illness that his father may have passed down to him
"dead!" or "the sharpest lives"? and I know how they used to drink a lot and possibly do drugs during their early career so I'm really curious how much that influences their later albums especially "danger days"
Guys! Check out the much longer and even more interesting podcast I did on "Black Parade": itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-pop-song-professor-podcast/id1113653385?mt=2
the black parade is definitely the pinnacle of the band but i think you would do a good job analysing early sunsets over monroeville, headfirst for halos, drowning lessons and our lady of sorrows (from the 2002 i brought you my bullets you brought me your love album) because they're super confusing and deep
I don't really think The Black Parade is the "theme song" for the Punk/Emp/anternative scene but it's definitely a well respected song and an anthem for a part of that scene. I don't think I've ever heard somebody in the alternative scene coplain about the song itself if somebody is complaining about the song it's in the context of some of the fans that sometimes get a bit annoying. But I think the song does well in representing what the scene stands/stood for (at least in the 2000s, now you can't generalize). The scene stands for sticking together, standing up for each other and trying to do what's right.
If you want to have Gerard's own words for the purpose of the album, look up the commentaries that went along with the release of the black parade. If you look it up on youtube, it pops up
duuuude too many good ones to pick from. Go with disenchanted!! I heard a theory that its partially bout the Gerard's run in with the used's front man before the release of BP. not much to support that but you're better at research than I am 😁
I don't think that any of the songs that actually made the album were specifically about Bert, but Party At The End Of The World from Living with Ghosts definitely is.
Speaking as a former “emo” I think what I found so comforting about it is that it allowed me to grieve. I wasn’t a carefree little kid anymore, but I had no real control to do anything about the horrible things in my life. Every day it felt like a little bit more of my innocence had died. Meanwhile no one really has an answer to how to cope with that loss of innocence. The reason why I think the black parade is such a popular song is because it has that double meaning of grieving for someone, but a lot of us adopt that technique into our lives to try and come out the other end alive. Grieving and depression are very closely intertwined and I think a black parade really illustrated for me how MCR kind of guided me through an awful dark tunnel to the other end. And going back to how close depression and grieving really is, a lot of us don’t make it out of that tunnel. Their newer songs have really kind of upbeat music, but the lyrics reflect some of the same beliefs while being more “grown up” at the same time. Say what you want about emo kids, I think some of the best adults are those who walked that path.
Gerard and Mikey gave a line by line dissection of the song on Kevin Smith's Smodcast episode 234 and 235. The actuall dissection is in 235 and 234 is more of just standard interview podcast.
I've literally listened to MCR since 2008 and never knew the whole album related to cancer a and was the narrative of a man going though it. Really changes everything.
-You know what they do to guys like us in prison -Thank you for the venom -famous last words -house of wolves -the sharpest lives -party poison -planetary go! -mama, (#1 fav)
I know this wasn't the intended meaning of the song but what I take from is it is that all of my relatives and family friends who have passed or still present want to see me grow into a strong, intelligent, and humble person. They don't want me to waste my life or get rid of it. Whenever I hear this song it makes me feel proud and wanted and loved and many other feelings all in one
For me this song is about how a young boy goes to a funeral with his dad, hence the black parade how people drive behind the funeral car. The dad is telling him that he will have to leave and join the black parade and he hopes that his son will do good things and be a good person and help others. That's just the first part the rest is the same as the video
yay! I really love your take on the song. I would love it if you did surrender the night from the album conventional weapons. mcr (along with tøp) is my favorite band of all time
Everyone keeps asking for their newer stuff. Pretty please do "Drowning Lessons". Of all their songs, I loved that one the most when it came out and still love it. It's a very haunting song and I'd love to know what it is about.
I always thought that the black parade was the funeral as everyone wears black and sometimes walks with the car down the road. I also thought that the she they talk about was death as in death is watching over them
I don't think saying she's watching over me is like the dead are observing almost like she is leading him or following him in his pursuits and the charge from his dad is an on going pursuit he has been following and Helena or she is following or being supportive of his choices. Helena was the grandmother of Mikey and Gerard.

Rae Rae Toro but the song is based on his grandma, he even said it on stage I think when they were at warped
Helena is about their grandma, but her name was Elena
Mikey and Gerard knew Elena as Helena I read somewhere.

It has a lot to do with the attacks on 9/11 bc that was why the band was formed. They wanted to put a voice to the feeling of that generation.
