Its so cool to see someone create a table top D&D character and then that character ends being canon in D&D lore and finds its way into video games. With BG3 I’m wondering if we do go back to Avernus, perhaps we may meet Arkhan the Cruel, Joe Manganiellos D&D character.
Hey Wolf! I reckon if we do go back to Avernus then there will definitely be a chance to meet Arkhan. He was a relatively important character in Descent and it is a prequel after all.
Since Matt Mercer is voicing Minsc I wonder if we are going to get any references to a certain group of nerdy voice actors who sit around and play dungeons and dragons
Dude please, start uploading again, I would love to see your opinion of the full game and how much of it was cut, changed or repurposed. Also some deep dive analysis and data mining videos would be awesome :)
Another way to bring Minsc back down to Level 1 is to remember that Minsc was in Elturel when it fell into Avernus in the Infernal Tides comic books. He fell into the River Styx, which erases memories, and he has forgotten much about his past. For now. Also, Minsc and Wulfgar (past life Wulfgar) are two of the tallest humans in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. 4:12 There are a couple more Minsc and Boo references in Mass Effect than that. When Tali'Zorah deploys her combat drone in Mass Effect 2, she sometimes says: "Go for the optics, Chikkita, go for the optics!" Also, Cameron Tofer's portrait is used as the Chaotic Neutral bard companion Garrick's default portrait in Baldur's Gate 1 (Top left corner on 3:03).
Yeah, been thinking about that fall into the river Styx. I wonder if they'll include all his comic adventures in the game, they should for continuity but not everyone has read them, in fact I imagine a small percentage of the player base has.
There are a couple plot holes in Minsc's comic book adventures that have been left unresolved on purpose (Like the fate of Coran's son who made a deal with Bel the original ruler of Avernus to save Eltruel from Zariel), to tell you the truth, and though most of the player base might not know about the events that occurred after BG2 and before BG3, the Spellplague, the Second Sundering, the Tyranny of Dragons, demons from the Abyss appearing in the Underdark, etc. we shouldn't make them feel that they have to read or play them all, not many people are cool with that, some know the lore only through the games, and it's important that they do not get pulled out of their comfort zone while understanding that the Forgotten Realms campaign setting's lore has been evolving these past few years.
Don’t forget that Minsc hid Boo in his prison wallet at the start of BG2. That may be where Boo resides while Minsc is inside the Mimic. Like a nesting doll situation.
6' 7" 273 lbs! Minsc is a big dude! It'll be interesting to see how Laraian scales him in size to the rest of the party. I'm distressed to think of Boo separated from Minsc, it could be very interesting to see what Minsc's mental state is when we meet him. Perhaps he went into the Mimic looking for Boo? Fun how Minsc has influenced cartoons and other games. I wonder if Cameron Toffer had any idea what he was bringing into the world with Minsc and how his character would become so well known? Love the video, Harbs! Great detective work uncovering the history of Minsc! And thanks to Larian for bringing back characters from BG1 & 2! If they bring back Viconia I think that would be the cherry on top for me. I look forward to your next video, have a great day!
If he does not say "This behavior must NOT continue. Feel the burning stare of my HAMSTER and change your ways!" When you make an evil decision I'm uninstalling.
Work with a kid who's 6'8. Truly giant doesn't quite cover it - everyone has to crane the neck for every interaction with him. (-⌣-;) Be interesting to see Minsc again. Neither him nor Jaheira are my favourites but it's a blessing to even *have* legacy characters here. And while I can't imagine him without his trusty hamster, it is a cool story beat to bring him down some levels! If he's even remaining a Ranger, that is...
Fun fact: On the original Mass Effect message boards they asked fans what they wanted in the second game, and I posted that it would be cool to see a miniature giant space hamster reference (I actually misspelled it as hampster and got burned a bit 😅). Low and behold, a year later when the sequel came out, he was in the game as a pet. I was shocked. Wish I could find that comment on waybackmachine.
1:04 The way that he's presented, at least to my eyes would seem that we're getting to interact with him shortly after he became unfrozen from his statue state. So anything from the comics by Jim Zub is not canon in Baldur's Gate 3, perhaps you could even say that this adventure happens before all of his other adventures? It might not make sense from the timeline perspective, but that's what it appears at least that we're working with. Pre-comic adventure Minsc. 👀 I was thinking about this last night actually, we seem to come across other characters who 'should be' stronger then they are when we meet them, like Halsin. He is an arch druid but he's only level 5 when we meet him in early access. He 'should be' far more powerful then what he is when we find him and have more abilities that we haven't seen yet and it's possible that he does, he's just locked at a lower level in Early Access and we don't see his full potential. The same might happen with Minsc. 🤷 Aside from that though, thank you for another stupendous video! I first met Minsc in Neverwinter online but before that didn't really know anything about him. Your content has helped fill in the gaps about this character I never knew before, but I am getting to know him now and I feel that will be important for when the game is fully released and I can finally play with this character in game. So again, thank you for that! 💕
You might be right about that. Do you think the Absolute will take him straight after being unfrozen? Maybe he gets captured during the 'Mindbreaker' arc though. Cheers for watching Mizu!
@@HarbsNarbs Well that's the thing, in the comics he has several more adventures before we even get to Mind Breaker. But from all appearances we seem to be getting him before any of those adventures. It's possible that Minsc gets taken shortly after being woken up, but probably not before helping out the wild magic sorcerer. Maybe just after that though, that would seem to be prime time to grab a well-known and powerful body to convert. In that way he's just like Ravengard, a prominent and well-known individual which if turned to the side of the Absolute would be a mole for them to be triggered at any point in time they desired. Essentially like a sleeper agent, and that's always a frightening thought.
The fact that it's been at least a year since the last video says a lot to me... Minsc's character was flanderised to hell and back. He just talks like a Joss Whedon character now.
There’s a couple of possible reasons. He has recently been through a very nasty divorce, where horrific accusations were thrown in both directions. The sort of accusations that ends careers in the current political environment. While fault was found on both sides, the divorce was resolved mostly in his favor back in May, but once you have been cancelled in current year it is very hard to be uncancelled… There are also rumors (though I have found no evidence of it personally) that he was anti-COVID vaccinations. Even ignoring the political ramifications of being so, that may have lead to logistical problems when it came to getting him in to a soundbooth. It’s practically impossible to travel at the moment without your COVID vaccination papers so Larian may have just decided to recast for that reason alone. Regardless I am sad that Jim won’t be reprising his role, and while I’m generally not a fan of sound-likes, Matt Mercer really impressed me with his version of Minsc. I fully believe that he will do our somewhat crazed ranger justice.
imho when looking at connections to the original games, we need a mindflayer video about their activities in bg2. @HarbsNarbs. theres after all also a cult running around in some sewers.

There's already so much devil stuff going on, that I won't be surprised if we'll end up in Avernus at some point
Arkan is a charachter in the official dnd idle game.

Chikkita? I'd say that's a 2fer of Baldur's Gate references; one to Minsc, and one to Aerie.
I know.

Minsc also chose Aerie as his new witch to protect in BG2, I'd love to see her in BG3, she's an elf and could still be alive for BG3

Finding Boo could be a quest we do with Minsc.
I want to see Viconia too! I doubt Cameron understood what he was unleashing on the world when he wrote up that character sheet in the 90s 😂
Love these trivia videos!
I tend to stay slightly away from datamining spoiler videos but these loretrivias are great!

Boo is the Absolute, calling it now!
Huh, so Minsc's quest in BG3 being to find Boo would bring things full circle
Hi Harbs! Thank you! You taught me a lot about Minsc that I didn't know about!
Hi Suzanne, glad to hear it!
Hey Harbs. I hope you're treating yourself well. Thanks for all you do!
What's your favorite part of the new patch thus far?
I haven't been able to play it... My computer broke. It's currently getting repaired. Nightmare!

I love Minsc. I wonder why they are not using the original voice actor? I think MM does a great job with Minsc but why not use the original?
I have no idea of the reason why, but from what I saw of Matt Mercer, his version of Minsc was really good
I've heard something or other about controversy with the original VA, so that could be why? Reputation is important.
