    Stuff we use:
    LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
    Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
    Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
    LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
    COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
    EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

    My ninth-grade English teacher taught five-step storytelling:
    1. Exposition - Who are the characters, and what do they want?
    2. Conflict - A big problem gets in the way of what characters want.
    3. Rising action/complications - The struggle toward the goal, and obstacles along the way.
    4. Climax - The moment of truth when everything can fall apart or be successful.
    5. Conclusion - protagonist meets success or tragic failure.
    That structure has worked well for me writing short stories and novels, but I'm interested in new approaches for writing TV scripts and possibly screenplays.

    For the midpoint, the way i approach it, is the characters for the first half have been reacting to everything and learning about the conflict, so when they reach the midpoint they are now taking the offensive approach. A New Hope the midpoint is when the millennium falcon goes into the death star, they are actively searching for the princess and trying to escape. At this point we know who the bad guys are, we know the stakes of the Death Star destroying planets, and we need to get the plans and princess out of there!
    So basically the mid point shifts from reaction to action

    • @ginofactap
      @ginofactap 2 года назад

      but the character already takes action when he chooses what to do with the "call to adventure" at the beginning. in fact, the entire 3 act structure could be considered constant action and reaction. I don't think mid point is any different in that regard. mid point is when, one of those many actions, goes completely wrong or it makes it all seem like a temporary victory.

    • @dericmederos1514
      @dericmederos1514 2 года назад

      @@ginofactap except the call to action is to take the first step into the 2nd act which is learn about the antagonistic force. Luke has no clue abot the death star or what its purpose is. Hell, he's going to alderaan no to the death star.

    Vladimir Propp was the first to in depth analysis of the structure of fairy tales. Although his work was published in 1928, no one noticed it as it was in Russian. Ony sometime in late 1950s did it get recognised thanks to his work getting translated to other languages. He is the father of Analysis of story structue.

    i think the most important thing that derives from this great interview is the awareness that you must have for what you can or you can't do. only if you work on a set you will understand what you can or can't do. i'm glad that she shared her thoughts and her experiences. I learned the 3 act structure as character learns something that changes things/ perspective at the midpoint, and the false victory/ defeat ends act 2, items act 3. I can see where a false victory at the midpoint can be useful.

    Holy smokes, a woman after my own heart! I too dislike directing movies, having directed 2 of my own feature length films. I would much rather be alone, writing screenplays like they're going out of style. I also used to read True Detective magazines, obviously what got me into true crime books. Sometimes I combine true crime with my weird fantasies and create thriller screenplays. I'm on my 30th screenplay at this time.

    Duey Millers 11 Act Structure:
    Act 1
    1) People are stupid. On page one; Someone does something stupid.
    2) Prove that the main character is an arrogant SOB.
    3) Enter pointless side characters that are more interesting than the main character.
    4) Main character should have an uninteresting life. With no goals or ambitions.
    5) The main character goes into action only after a pointless side character threatens them with a gun or ass kicking.
    Act 2
    6) The big fight, or CONFLICT. ( By who? Main character or side ones. It really just doesn't matter!)
    7) Midpoint: repeat 1 to 4.
    8) Have drug use or some other crippling action of the main character.
    9) Pointless side characters prove that they don't give a ship about the main character.
    Act 3
    10) Climax! or sex. If main character is under age than have them dream about getting the boy or girl. (No sex for them.)
    11) Finish with a double ending. The script could end but you add some stupid, pointless surprise that adds another 5 to 10 minutes to the movie.
    If I see another bluntly obvious 3 acts in a movie or book, I put the book down or walk out. I'm sick of unimaginative crap. The worst offenders are those that stick to some lame ass structure. Hey man, write something is original and don't let anyone a-hole pigeonhole your writing.

    Es cierto que en cuanto uno se encuentra con este tipo de estructuras siente la tentación de tomarlo al pie de la letra, como un manual. Pero, hasta que uno entiende que debe servir más como una referencia, sobretodo para no perder el foco de la historia que quieres contar. Disfruto mucho estos videos, gracias por todo.

    Which story structure do you prefer?

    • @JoeyMicilcavage00
      @JoeyMicilcavage00 2 года назад

      I am much as she is in that I use them as inspiration, or guides, or triggers. For instance, I have it in my head that in the heroes journey the hero encounters a foe who pretends to be a friend near the end of his journey just before rebirth. Recently while writing a character emerged who would be a perfect fit for such a foe. Like our teacher I see too much structure as a paint by numbers schema.

    • @JHolt_88

      I prefer a structure that creates grey characters. I hope one of these interviews you do in future episodes you can interview someone who writes and directs grey character archetypes and stories. It would be interesting to hear their approach.
