As a structural engineer myself over in the UK who follows many creative RUclipsrs looking to remodel their house, I have to say this one takes the biscuit! The split levels and quirkiness of materials will be quite the challenge, but really interested to see how it turns out! Good luck
U and Dylan are the Gen Z Mr Kate, i love it. I like "the quirky house" its the perfect way to describe your house. Loving all your ideas and i cant wait to see the process of it all.
You’re so much better than mr. Kate because you really focus on function while having inspirational style. I think of mr. Kate as a “tv show designer” who focuses on what looks good in a video and not what would be good to LIVE in
Have you considered doing an epoxy poured floor over the brick? You’d still visually have the brick, but it would have a smooth surface and a sealed finish. Just a thought! I’ve seen some really cool videos of floors made that way.
Lots of VOC's for years. If you are the least bit sensitive it could make the place unlivable. The brick is an interesting conundrum. I just don't want to see her do something that could make her sick and it would be such a large amount of epoxy. Even a low VOC product would create a problem with that much floor space.
As a wheelchair user, the fact that you are thinking of a larger doorway really hits home for me. Many of my friends and family don’t have restrooms that I can’t even fit through the door. Thank you for this! Immediately subscribing!
finally catching up on the whole playlist! you should put a secret door from the master bedroom's bed/built-in wall into the changing room (i think they share a wall?) -- amazing opportunity to connect the two as a full suite/closet thing, and secret doors are perfection!
I just read the article in the New York Times showing the makeover of your parents' house. WOW! You are so talented. It brought tears to my eyes to watch your parents see their new house. I bet they are glad they paid for that Interior Architecture degree now! You have changed their life--it must be like coming home to a new house for them now. You are fabulous!
Loving your ideas! I wonder if you can salvage the brick from the living room and under the kitchen wood burner to use in other places. Also in your work space with slider, I think some French doors there would be really beautiful too. Good luck on all the renos!
One thing - absolutely off topic, i'm sorry - i adore about your videos so far is that where ever you go and film, your boyfriend/husband follows you and quietly sits down nearby and looks at what you explain. I just think it's such a cute way of showing his love/attention towards you. And i think i just found my new favourite kind of videos: renovating houses/spaces. I'm an architecture master student and absolutely love dreaming about how to turn old spaces into new/better atmospheres! I'm stoked for this series!!! You got soooo much talent! ♥️
I don’t think anyone but you could make the house as cool as you envision. I can’t wait to see more! // My house name ideas are: Journey Destiny The Steps Radiant House Location Station Waystation Playing Field Niches, Nitching, or Nichin’ Home Flow, Mo’ Flow, or just Flowing Quid Pro Flow Cascade The Warren (think of a rabbit hole, which can have multiple levels and rooms) Rabbit’s Run (same concept) The Burrows (same concept) I was trying to think of a name that captures the concept of having such a good variety of distinct niche/bubbles spaces for various interests - as well as the interesting meandering pathways through your space, plus the light-filled rooms. Also the many spots for guests. (I’ll edit to add more as I think of them.)
I think the smaller downstairs room (the one with brick) would be so cool as a sitting room/lounge/library/bar area and the bigger more cave like area be the TV & cozy family room but seems like dance may be a bigger part of your life than most.. Either way I'm excited to see what you do with this quirky home!
“Piier’s Pad” would be a great name for the house. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re taking out the woodstoves. I understand the one in the kitchen being in the way, but you’d save a fortune in heat with at least one and I’m not seeing the danger with the one downstairs - you can build it up at the edge of the base if you like. I have one and it’s so cozy (maybe put one in upstairs too?)! Not to mention the shoulder and arm muscles Dylan will build up splitting wood!! 😻😻🤤 I do love your plans though!
I cannot wait to see what y’all are going to do to this house! I saw the brick floor in the original video and thought that might need to go, but you’re right, it’s sooo beautiful/ What if you did a HUGE area rug, and put the couch, etc on top? Could that work? Maybe a ruggable? It’s your house, totally up to you - I live in a brick space and I know they can be hard to maintain, especially with heat loss! But figured I’d offer that up as an idea :)
You are going to have so much fun! Now would be a good time to get a heating/cooling consultation plan for the house before you start. It’s a big house to heat and if that’s oil it’s expensive. Prob why he had the wood stoves and the lattice to keep it open to circulate the heat. I like the other persons idea re in floor heating in places. Also maybe check out solar. Are there any state rebates available or to upgrade windows? I had a new larger home w gas that was not exp to heat w good insulation and windows. Then I rented a tiny home w almost no insulation that was heated w oil and paid 3X as much to heat it. 😀
100% agree on closing up the floor upstairs and extending the bathroom. If done the road you do want to sell, it’ll be a great selling point. House name idea: The Spilt House Quirky Queen 😅
Love this tour video and all your ideas! That kitchen is gonna be immaculate! I’m curious if you’re keeping the open stairs? And carpet? I wish you could keep the mezzanine vibe but makes sense to have more floor space and bigger bathroom! Can’t think of a name for the house, only word that comes to mind is Quirky 😋
Have you seen the kitchen island that has a table that is hidden inside it? It is very similar to the one you envision for your kitchen. The only difference is the table can be pushed inside the island when you want more space then pulled out when you are entertaining. Like a Murphy-table.
What about moving the stairs on the side you want to fill, by the windows, to avoid awkward door entrances to the yellow getting ready room? Love the quirky brick house 😄
What about an accent wall or mural on the wall to the bathroom you're gonna square out? You can still have that aesthetic moment that way maybe 🤷🏼♀️ could even add some hooks on the wall for coats and stuff so it still looks inviting. Love the uniqueness of this house! So excited to see what you do with it!
Have you looked at putting some kind of clear coating over the brick so it feels nicer and is easier to clean? Not sure if that’s possible or preferable but a thought
You've a lot of work ahead of you. Exciting times. Best of luck to you both with it all and can't wait for the journey however long it takes. Take your time. Would there be any way of salvaging the bricks from the floor to use in your arches?
The Brick House. Also, would you consider moving your washer & dryer upstairs? That is my idea of luxury-not having to carry laundry baskets up the steps!!
You could repurpose those mirrors, from the last room, down to your dance room too :) Just re-frame them or a bit of spray paint :) -- I'm excited to see what you do!
I albsolutely love all your ideas!! For the brick flooring, would it be an option to pour some sort of laquer or something made for floors that would be transparent and just seal everyting?
Is all the work that was previously done on the house grandfathered in? I'm glad you talked with the structural engineer. There were several things I noticed that seemed awkward about the house. I hope you are able to do what you wish. Quirkiness can be really fun , but also really frustrating. I'm looking forward to how you manage it all.
I love your ideas and look forward to watching your journey. I was wondering for the bathroom downstairs could you extend the door opening a little to the right and put in a pocket sliding door? Just a thought, so you could keep the original angled design at the entrance of the space.
I wish but the tub is essentially touching it on the right side so any sliding door would still be pretty small and I’m not sure the logistics of a pocket door in a plumbing wall :( Will have to see still though, still looking into options!
You should probably remove the tub anyway and replace it with a stall shower with grab bars.(better for elderly and handicapped.)That might give enough extra room for her pocket door idea.🤔
Please don’t steal all 3 windows for the bathroom, maybe 2 at max! That light coming in is just so gorgeous and I think the point of those sliding doors was so light could seep in. Love love your ideas and I’m so exited for your renovation journey!💖
I think the guest bathrooms wall is so iconic :(( would u consider just extending the space more into the closet by it and keeping the shape? Idrk if it’d work but the wall itself is just so unique.
Loving the sketches!!! Very excited to see it all done, where do we fast-forward time a little bit? hahaha Only thing for me would be a passage from the living room straight to the dining area, yes the kitchen will be THE MOMENT, but it's not everyday that you'll want your guests to go through your kitchen before having dinner, sometimes it's caos and you'll to hide that 🤣🤣 I would definitely try to see if I can fit a door there somehow
I’m so excited to watch your videos 🥲 your house is so unique and I’m sure you will make it even more unique and amazing! 🤩 Also, what do you use to make the sketches?! I would like to do some for my own spaces to be able to visualize them as well 🥲
I'm worried that the bathroom will make the corridor outside your dressing room too dark. I think extend the bathroom but not all the way. And how about putting in glass floor pannels where the gaps in the floor are now? A nice homage whilst still extening the floor space
I would bring up the living room floor to the same level as the kitchen, take out the slider and make it just a large opening. The space below the new living room floor becomes a storage crawl space for the basement. You will need to place a new stair down to the basement from the hall. The bedrooms should not have sliders. replace with normal bedroom doors. Love your idea about making the bathroom bigger, for a normal sized master bath. I love the dark ceiling beams, but that is just subjective. your choice.
Loving the overall design, but one thing to maybe consider is if I am understanding you correctly, there will be walls of cabinets in every room. I'm wondering if perhaps in your primary suite you might consider doing something different so as to break up the theme of cabinets, which could start to feel a bit redundant asthetically.
Is there room to just move your washer and dryer upstairs and just keep the room they’re in now as a mechanical room.No matter what you do with that room it seems like it’ll be small and awkward for laundry plus you’ll then have to carry your laundry up and down all those steps each time which may not be an issue now but could be if you have a whole family one day to do laundry for or if you intend to stay there long term as you get older travelling all the steps with laundry could be more challenging….though it’s kind’ve a pain at any age.It would make sense while you’re doing the big renos to think about the laundry a bit more but just a thought.
Totally agree. The best thing about our home is that the laundry is on the floor where it all gets made ie the bedroom floor. Makes sense. Especially since it could go in the large room you’re thinking of making into a closet- which is 100% a great plan!!
I love your videos and love that you’re thinking about accessibility for your guests. I'm not sure about the sizes of the rooms... But what if you swapped the bedroom and "walk in closet" spaces? Then you could have the closet right off your bathroom.
I definitely love the naming the house idea. But it should be more of a real name than a description. Like Harry Potter and the Weasley's house called The Burrow, or other British architecture.
For floor plans/3D rendering I use Revit which is something I learned in school for interior architecture and it’s pretty intense but if you want to try out a program with measurements etc. I recommend Sketchup, it’s great for beginners!! For the sketching in this video I used Procreate and I made the mood board-esque things in Adobe illustrator!
I think you need another bathroom upstairs because if you have guests over or when you will have kids, they will have to use the master bathroom with you.
