THIS MARCH IS SO FEKIN AWESOME PIPE MAJOR JOHN MACDONALD AND RODERICK MACDONALD AND NORMAN MACDONALD MY LATE FATHER KENNY MACDONALD LOVED THIS ITS A TRUE SAYIN THE OLD ONES ARE THE BEST IT WAS COMPOSED IN THE MID EIGHTEEN HUNDREDS FOR THE FANTASTIC CAMERON HIGHLANDERS BY MY LATE GREAT GREAT UNCLE JOHN MACDONALD I LOVE IT GOD BLESS OUR SCOTTISH SOLDIERS THE INNER AND OUTER HEBRIDES HE WAS A GREAT SKYE PIPER, SPARTAN TARTANS CLANRANALD R.MACDOALD
Indeed, I always found this tune especially rousing, but also moving, but only a few weeks ago did I realise the divinity in the song, first because it epitomises the joy of the Jocks at leaving Gibraltar for Canada, as opposed to the original West Indies posting (which, tropical though it might seem) would have meant an early disease-induced grave for many. Then, the story goes, in fog in the St Lawrence Seaway, the captain of the troopship as fog descended begged the Bandmaster to have his musicians play to avoid collisions ... this explaining the repeat foghorn kind of sound we hear in the tune! So the tune has joy and relief and salvation in it, as those who see, see...
I've been looking for a decent sounding recording of this song for AGES. (like, 10 years at least.) Really nice to have found it after all this time. Great performance
NIckmacvicar, It's pretty much impossible to not whistle along with the 79th Farewell, especially when it's played as incredibly as the RRS plays it. Very impressive, and thanks for sharing. I think I'll just press the "Play" button again....;-)
Great video. For a good CD recording of this check out "Fields of Honour" by the Band of the Royal Regiment of Canada with the Pipes and Drums of the 48th Highlanders of Canada. You won't be disappointed.
You are right! They are RIGHT-LEFT-RIGHT instead of LEFT - RIGHT - LEFT. they are missing the beat during the first countermarch, due to the high rythm they are playing the tune (correctly by the way: it is not good to play this at 112 but at least 116 paces per minute - but then you have to keep the pace). Bloody hell, I am the organiser of the tour and I realised it on the spot!
If you watch the Drum Major - especially at the end - I think you'll find that the video is out of the synch with the sound, with the music being slightly ahead of the video.
This must be one of the first times that these two new bands have combined. What was the occasion for in Italia?? Both bands look small, and its surprising that the RSBs don't have a DM on parade? The combined sound is better in this kind of mixed formation as opposed to putting pipers in front and band behind as in another related video here. A treat to see both new bands together, but sad how small compared to the old regimental bands of the Black Watch, KOSBs, Gordons, Royal Scots, etc.
Great performance . Greetings from Gibraltar.
Whistling is 👌👌

'Rah!
i hope my last visit to gib. wasn't my last ever.
Oops, thank you. I always tend to mix my regiments.
79th Farewell to Gibraltar...
I love this tune but it would sound a whole lot better if they were to lose the rump-a-pump trumpets and go pure pipes n' drums.
It's meant to be like that...
Long live the freedom of Scotland!!!
Scotland is Free ffs.
8(
strange they're marching on wrong beat!!
