      Hay if life is a little shake, it is not about quitting it may slow you down, not shut you down. When I cut my hand with a carving knife 2 years ago, my hand and my arm still go numb. I have dropped my plane and saws on occasion. I have gotten better. Yes, had I just given up, I it would have taken longer to recover.

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo So, why can't you do videos with hands that shake? I don't watch your hands when you do a video, I listen to what you are saying, and enjoying every minute. Besides, there are ways to record what you are doing without seeing vibrating digits.There are hand positions using finger rests that will diminish the movement, and let you record fine work. That's how I manage the same shaking issue. I wish we could talk about it over a cup of coffee, but, as long as you can speak, I see no reason for you to stop your videos. I've been dealing with this, btw, for 17 years, and I was a health professional, so, I know a bit about this. Me, spinal cord injury, two major spinal surgeries and neck reconstructions, with a series of minor strokes following, because, why not? Hang in there!!

    This message hits home for me. I have neurologic problems with my hands and a degenerative connective tissue disorder, so my hands are shaky and getting weaker. Last year my only hand tool project was a set of oak bookends for my daughter. This year - nothing. I'm hoping to return to woodworking when I retire from my desk job in a couple of years, hoping to have some function left in my hands. We've all got a ticking clock, and we just need to make the most of it while we can. Wishing you many years of happy shop time, James.

    I believe that Stumpy Nubs did a video a couple of years ago about degenerative condition he has that makes his hands shake in the shop. Each condition is its own thing to be fair, but he didn’t seem like it had stopped him from making things. Just maybe less hand tool work and more jigs with electron infested demonic power tools for him over time.
    Hope you keep doing well man. You rock

    Many of us have “essential tremor” which means our hands shake for no known reason. Every time I see a new physician he or she starts Parkinson’s screening. There are good days and bad days for the shaking. As you teach for holding chisels and other tools to support your hands the effect of any shaking is minimized. I did more precise work such as placing micro needles for nerve recordings than is needed for woodworking. Keep working with your practitioner for treatment but you should continue to enjoy your shop time safely for a long time.

    I have the same thing, essential tremors. I began to have them around age 70, as did my father. Woodworking stopped at age 80 for both of us. It can be heredity. My sister has tremors worst than me but my brother does not have them.
    Fortunately, there is some help other than medication. Two procedures, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and Focused Ultra Sound(FUS) have proven to significantly improve the tremors. I started looking into them a year ago at Emory University in Atlanta and after many months of tests and evaluation I WAS approved for FUS to be done on January 10, 2025. The improvement should be immediate and I am most excited about that. The procedure is FDA approved and will be covered by Medicare and my supplemental insurance.
    Since 30 % of Americans have essential tremors, there is a ton of good information on this subject on the internet. I will post the results after that. While my tremors should significantly improve, it will be interesting to see how much of a re-learning curve I will face to get back to a satisfactory level of profiency.

    • @TOT3m1c
      @TOT3m1c 4 дня назад +1

      Essential tremor can be overproduction or over-response to adrenaline. (Medically, the beta-adrenaline axis) Occasional beta-blockers (considered a performance enhancing drug against the rules in Olympic biathlon) are used by many performers e.g. musicians to steady the hands, because shaky hands-> stage fright->will people see->shaky hands (and so on)

    There is an old shooting coach who taught me precision shooting, and he had a pretty pronounced tremor. The odd thing, tho was when he picked up a pistol and got into position, he locked in and was as still as a board. There is just so much practice and muscle memory over the years. Still scores targets with a magnifying glass.

    I hear you! Dealing with Parkinson’s myself - it is different, but for me it’s a matter of planning my work around on and off times, periods where I’m able to do fine work, wide movement work (like planing), and not work. You’ll find ways to adjust, and there’s no shame in using support power tools (although those can sometimes make things much worse) or asking for help.

      I deeply understand your issue. My grandson, age 25, has been dealing with EXTREMELY HORRIBLE muscle contractions, spasms. Sadly, antipsychotic drugs turned that switch to the in position about 10 years ago. Now that they know his real problem, schitzophrenia, it has gotten much worse. The medication that helps him with the mental issue, amplifies the severity of the spasms. Now, he has 2 sets of implants to lower the pain associated with the spasms. As a side effect of the implants, even the severity of the spasms has been lowered.

    Now power tools is what I would stay away from.
