My 79 Les Paul deluxe with it's mini humbuckers is absolutely ace ! Still gigging this guitar to this day and have never even had to take the truss rod cover off, but it's done my shoulder in over the years lol !
I purchased a cherry sunburst 1972 LP Deluxe I purchased brand new in 1973. I'm 72 years old. I still own it! Got me through many years of gigging. It's been refretted once and needs it again. Fantastic axe!
I have just found and enjoyed this video. Sadly I was recently broken into and my Les Paul Standard was stolen. After spending a day in in my local guitar shop working my way through their Les Pauls I came across a 1977 Les Paul Delux, played back to back within their collection it blew everything else away (including custom shop and Murphy Lab models) it now hangs on my wall when not being played. Listen to the man, check them out, you will be surprised.
I took mine into a couple guitar shops to have the body routed out and fitted with full size Humbuckers. Both shops refused and assured me I would regret it. So glad I took their advice and kept it stock. So, Instead, I bought Les Paul Traditional. So now, I have the best of both worlds! 😊
I think you hit it right on the head. The stigma of the 70’s & the guitar industry remain even though there was a tremendous amount of experimentation & progress made in the decade. I think the guitar looks & sounds amazing. Almost has a jazzy sound to it. Thanks Cooper.
I have always had a soft spot for Deluxes due to the fact that Scott Gorham played so many fantastically tasty solos using a Deluxe during the 70s in Thin Lizzy. I would like Gibson to make a natural finish for Deluxes, Standards and Customs .
When I bought my 1979 deluxes back in 1980 I never looked back, while the masses largely ignored the deluxes I have many happy decades gigging mine and STILL gigging them.
i have an 81 les paul deluxe that i got a deal on in 88, i was dead set on changing out the minis but after playing it a while gigging it getting other les paul sounds from it, never sounding muddy always sounding good clean or overdriven with the notes still having lots of sustain and attack, i thought to myself, this guitar is perfect as it is
I have a 1974 that I got in 1988. Some years back I took it into NYC's 30th Street Guitars, musing about what it would take/cost/etc to get it routed for PAF-style humbuckers. Matt took one look at it, shook his head, and said to leave well alone. Man, was that ever the right decision! We did, however, replace the harsh bridge pickup with a creamy Lollar plus installed a vintage wiring loom. Now it is absolute killer and is my #1.
I wanted to add that this guitar sounds just like rock music from the 70's! I love Rock from the 70's and would love to play it! Thank you again Cooper for showing this Les Paul!
I remember seeing guys back in the ‘70s playing the Deluxe and it seemed almost all were that color. I can name 5 people right now that have the Original ones in that color! Great guitar. I have a ‘60s reissue I bought in 2011 that I put the Mini-Humbuckers on and I just Love the sound!! Cheers Cooper from Salem, Ohio.
I have one. A Goldtop. I like it. I've liked the mini-hum ever since I had a '68 Wilshire 12-string equipped with them. They sounded great on that guitar.
That color really pops in this video. Beautiful guitar. I still own the 79 wine red deluxe I bought new in Abilene,Tx. Not the most loved years for Gibson, but they are starting to come around. I was in Norman’s Rare Guitars not long ago and he had a couple. Approaching $6000. When I bought mine I thought , someday, when I’m old, it will be vintage. I am, and it is.🎸😊
I was the first owner of a gold top ‘70 Deluxe from 1971 to 2014. (I only sold it to make mortgage payments during an employment lapse. ) The minis had a slightly more trebly response than regular-sized humbuckers. It did cover Allman Bros or Marshall Tucker tones very well.
I have a 78 Deluxe. It's my magic guitar. The trick for me is to turn the tone knobs down to like 2 or 3. Turn the volume up to 9 or 10. Use both pickups and I get incredible warmth and unending sustain. Perfect for songs like Europa.
@@RichardPerrymanGuitarist A volute will be evident as it is an extra piece of wood at the join between the headstock and the neck. I wish that Gibson would include volutes on all of their guitars as volutes strengthen this vulnerable area.
Great color and sound. It’s something I would look seriously into. And your pieces were perfect to showcase it’s sound, Cooper. They accentuated the guitar’s voice clearly and pleasantly.
I bought one of these last month. It's the sound I've been looking for. I I have a custom shop SG 1961 Anniversary with the Custombuckers. It's a fantastic guitar but I prefer the Deluxe now. Its' got such a detailed clear sound and in my mind it's like a P90 kinda sound but way better. My favorite guitar now. This a great demo here.
Thanks for another great review. I own a 92 Les Paul Studio in wine red and I love the colour. The sound and playability of it has taken the better part of thirty years, classic 57s Russian Paper in oil capacitors and rewiring to 50s style. Other problems were a concave (collapsed Tom bridge) mounted backwards such the that the stop tailpiece had to be ridiculously high. The bridge pickup was unusable and measures 16k ohms. Most of the problems were the dealer setup. Over the years it has taught me how to set up an instrument. The only thing missing was binding though I love the minimalist look. Another thing I really appreciate is your playing. The chords are simple, but the technique and articulation combine to make something beautiful. Come and play in UK soon.
Th 10:44 e color is great. In 2973 D1974 I bought a used Deluxe just to have a LO. I wanted a black Custom but they were expensive even used. It was OK having a Deluxe but when I joined a band I knew the pickups were kind of weak with out much D.C Resistance so I had it touted for Humbuckers and it was great after that.
I purchased an original brand new 1971 Deluxe, which I bought in 1972, and it sounds great. Then I purchased a new 2014 LP Traditional, and yes, It sound a bit muddy, and I was a bit disappointed, but I tweaked the guitar’s volume and tone controls, and the amp settings, and found tone that more suited to some songs: mostly 50 rock, Chuck Berry etc. stuff, and such, and when I want to channel Mike Bloomfield, the Traditional brings it home. Now if could PLAY like Mike, that would be the icing on the cake.
I have a wine red 1977/78 LP Deluxe which I bought new in 78. Fantastic, immensly playable guitar, with a great sound IMO! I think they get a bit of a bad press.
Seriously? I have one too with a Nashville serial number. I got mine used, for only $450 in 1981 because the first owner left belt buckle scratches on it. Mine is highly customized I and will play it until my fingers no longer work.
I took delivery of a cherry sunburst Deluxe this week, a "scratch and dent" model that was discounted by 33%. $2k instead of $3k, after tax - epic deal! It has a few tiny dings on the back but the face is pristine. I'm a Fender guy so I love the brighter response of the minis. I'm a big Thin Lizzy fan and that model was prominently featured during the "Robbo and Scott" years. (It is still Robbo's main axe after 50 years though it now sports full-size humbuckers.) A high school friend had a Deluxe, circa 1981, and mine is the same spine-busting battleship anchor that his was. I do believe Gibson has discontinued the cherry sunburst model because it is no longer advertised on Sweetwater, AMS or Zzounds' websites, and the Gibson website mentions that they have just a few left in stock. (I would recommend to anyone interested in one to play it first if they've never played one. The minis don't whack the front end of my DSL like full-size buckers on the Ultra Gain channel.)
Bought one last week, the last one I had was a late 70s which I sold 1990. Both were wine red. I did try the standard and a 339. So far an amazing unit highly recommended.
I have this exact guitar in the cherry sunburst version. It even has some flame in the top. I love it and it sounds amazing. It has great clarity but is still a rock and roll machine when you play it through a tube amp with high gain. I would not trade it for the standard version based on the tones I get from this guitar. I have a Gibson ES-335 with full size humbuckers if I want that tone. I highly recommend you try it!
I just purchased a cherry burst just last year and now I’m selling because they came out with the wine red!! I have to have one!! All that aside I love the sound of the pickups, sounds so good I can’t put it down!!!
My 1977 PRO-DELUXE with P-90-s was WINE RED and I. Had 2 Ebonys and a lot heavier! No weight relief I still have them and 1 Tobacco with Firebird mini humbuckers..Lovee my Wine red!!
I have a Les Paul Custom in wine red... Then I added a Les Paul Special. to the collection... I took the p90's out ( because I have two other Guitars with p90's) I installed, Gibson's mini humbuckers...in the les paul special... ABSOLUTLY LOVE THE SOUND , AND CLARITY OF THE NOTES AND CHORDS... So much so that i'm seriously thinking about switching out the 490's humbuckers in the Custom.. and installing Gibson's mini Humbucker.. PS. I know all about the difference route between humbucker , and mini humbucker...
So the reason the Les Paul Deluxe is so rad is that the routing for those mini humbuckers will fit a P90. That's what Neil young and Mike Ness always did with theirs. I'm not a big fan of les Pauls in general, but when you put a P90 in, it's amazing!
Cooper, I had a 1975 Cherry Sunburst LP Deluxe and regret letting it go. Really like this new wine red finish! Think its time to restock the guitar in my collection. Don't forget, Pete Townshend played his LP Deluxe' for many years and had the big numbers on the front to differentiate them.
Wine Red color on a guitar is so nice looking and I really dig how this LP in the video looks. I'm not a Les Paul person but love the Les Paul HB sound and I do have a 10lb 56 reissue Gold Top LP with P90's and Bigsby that IMO is about as sweet looking and sounding as I think a LP can get but its not a guitar I play often. I've heard mini HB's sound good and bad to me but in general if I had to choose between mini and full size HB I would go full size.
I owned a 78 and eventually sold it. Wasn't much of a guitar. Encountered a few of them since, including two for sale in the same shop in Melbourne, both very average, both with ridiculously thin necks and both quite unstable and both wanting to fall off my knee backwards. Both over 7K aust dollars. Crazy. Then I played a mid 2000 reissue and it was better in every respect. That's said I'm sure there were a few good ones.
Mini hums will compress really well when over driven. Great for soloing. Clean they are really sweet - jangly, nice trebles, sort of like if a humbucker and a Strat single coil had a baby.
I have a 2014 Gibson firebird. Also minihumbuckers but different body shape. I also have a Les Paul studio, a Les Paul standard 60 and a fender marauder with p90. When I play slide the firebird is the one of choice, it has the fat body/sound of a Les Paul and the clear sound of a p90. This is going to be my new purchase, I hope the different body shape doesn't affect it too much. The firebird is too big for me.
I like my 70s Deluxe Les Paul. Mine is Cherry Sunburst/clown burst and I even like the color. To me, the Deluxe almost has a single coil tone without the hum. I’ve also got p90 and full size humbucker Les Pauls but I find myself picking up the Deluxe because the tone is distinctive.
Hi! I have a p90 gibson les paul and was thinking about putting a mini humbucker in the neck, since the neck p90 is very bassy and not clear sounding. Do you think the mini humbucker would solve that issue? Thanks
Alas! Poor Yorick, I knew him well...............not really, but in the UK in the 70s the cherry sunburst Les Paul deluxes were everywhere, loads of guys used them. I borrowed a Gold Top 60s one for a while and used it through an AC30 or a big Fender outfit that I had. A very handsome guitar and very versatile. Very good clean jazzy sounds (which I couldn't play at the time but.............), clear and smoky for bluesy stuff and a terrific country sound through the Fender.....which it suited very well. It also did the early Richard Thompson cranked-up "tweed" sound better than any other guitar through the Fender but with the AC30, I tended to use a choice es335 that I still have - the mini h/bucks don't have quite the overdrive poke of fat ones. Actually, the L/P deluxe is one of the best country guitars around. The two p/ups together have a beautiful, rich-and-clear ring to them. I don't know of any other Gibson that sounds quite like that. The last I saw, Gibson had re-issued it as having a different set of minis and a sort of battery-powered boost switch in place of one of the controls. Since I've never come across anyone using one of these..........why? I'd have an early one in good nick like a shot.
A really good, useful review. Nice, musical playing (he always does that) and some sensible chat about the now-fading trend for silly colours. We'll (ahem) "say no more" about robot tuners. Maybe the deluxe doesn't fly off the shelves? They are great guitars, very versatile, not a bad sound in them, easy to play and dial in - looks like folks are still missing a trick there.
Biggest complaint I've seen about the 70s Deluxes is their weight. From what I've seen, they seem to be heavier than most. Would love to try one. They sound fine to me. Love that wine red. Wish that was more of an option. Was never a fan of cherry or the goldtops.
I've read that the early mini humbuckers on Gibsons were from a big leftover batch from when they acquired Epi and they decided to use them. Required a special routing template. Nice guitars really.
Great color and just style I want. I loved my deluxe a long time ago. It girl friend stold it from me back 1990s. Pickups were not so good according to a friend I played with
I LIKE 'EM!! DELUXES ALWAYS HAVE BEEN MY FAVES, & as a LEFTY I FINALLY HAVE ONE, and it Doesn't even weigh 10+ pounds!!! SO COOL!! (Plus, it's a Double-cut!!!)
I like both Minis and P90s way better than the usual HB. They really should offer the ES-335 with these Mini-Humbuckers on board. OTOH, the current Studios have lovely color choices including one a lot like the Deluxe in this demo. Putting Mini-Hums in one of those and saying "No" to the back pain . . . . Now there is a thought.
I actually have a 1977 Les Paul Deluxe. I wonder what the difference with the new ones is. Great guitar. If the new one sounds like it, good for Gibson.
That color is beautiful! I wonder why they didn’t use the “Gibson” embossed pickups like I have on my ‘71 or ‘72 LP deluxe with minis. I think that would have added just a little touch of class to these great reissues. I like the slightly brighter minis and it’s goin' to the grave with me! OK, maybe not, I do have guys in my family who play guitar..
A buddy mine is selling a tobacco sunburst 1978 Les Paul deluxe for one of his customers. It plays well. Great neck. Good condition, players grade. HOWEVER, the serial number has been chiseled away. He’s already spoken to the police and based on the and non-markable features it would not be easily identifiable as stolen. That all being said, he’s priced it $3000. Reverb is about $3K - 6K. What evaluation would place on this guitar?
hi master❤️, I'm looking for LP exclusively for jazz, then very round clean notes.. not slim neck because it's for stages concerts... then strong neck model... I'd prefer unburst but anyone else good to. which one can you choose for me. thks
I like the sound. I don’t know why it wouldn’t be loved. Also, why do we have to pick one over the other? What would really be cool is to have all three Les Pauls
Gibson didn't do the sunburst accurately to how it was done in the 70s. Back then, the sides, back, and neck were also bursted. Not so on the latest reissue.
Mini-bickers are the most versatile pickup around. Sweet as Jazz or hard as The Who. Gibson should have followed the 1970’s design with a maple neck, a volute, chrome tulips, etc but at least they are reissuing it In spirit. Epi should offer one.
At first I thought it was my trad pro V. I didn't know wine red was such an old LP color option. And here I thought I had gone with something more "modern" to stand out. 🥴

Have a 2005 Gibson reissue same colour as this, brilliant guitar
Thanks
@@mossstephen1066 Yes, the mini humbuckers are definitely brighter than P90s and can be installed without modifications on your guitar.
@@ericoswood1856 thanks for your qyick reply! Trying to love the guitar but finding it hard. Hopefully this is the answer then.
Love that tune you played.
Mary Jane's Last Dance
I do not own a professional guitar.. I look forward to the day I can own one.. I wouldnt turn down an opportunity to own ANY Les Paul
As a Tele and gretsch player, I prefer the mini hums. Beautiful guitar!
Beautiful guitar, awesome sound, and you performed a great demo. Thank you!
I love this guitar Craig Presnell
I wish you would do a mini humbuckers vs P90s demo video.
The 70's Les Paul Deluxe is my favorite Les Paul.
THIN LIZZY USED DELUXES WITH MINI HUMBUCKERS
Very nice guitar think I will get one
Great color and just style I want. I loved my deluxe a long time ago. It girl friend stold it from me back 1990s. Pickups were not so good according to a friend I played with
I love the color of it. I have a classic thats similar.
I LIKE 'EM!! DELUXES ALWAYS HAVE BEEN MY FAVES, & as a LEFTY I FINALLY HAVE ONE, and it Doesn't even weigh 10+ pounds!!! SO COOL!! (Plus, it's a Double-cut!!!)
So this are 50's spect body with mini humbuckers? Would be cool to see a neck veloute
Interesting, I have a 60's les paul standard and was thinking about adding a 50's. This sounds really good, like a p90 without hum
Wish I had my Deluxe that I bought back in 71!!!
Sounds really good 👍 I would like to have one
I'd prefer unburst but anyone else good to. which one can you choose for me. thks
I want a wine red Les Paul Standard, with a flamey top.
I saw one at Guitar Center in Boston a few years ago . The wine Red really made the flame pop. It looked amazing.
I like the sound. I don’t know why it wouldn’t be loved. Also, why do we have to pick one over the other? What would really be cool is to have all three Les Pauls
I love it. I grew up with one. Maybe someday will buy one of these bad boys.
Pete Townsend loved them wine red mini humbuckered les Pauls.
John McLaughlin is a big fan of the DeLuxe LP. In fact he had a travel guitar build with 1 Mini HB.
That should be enough for anyone.
I definitely prefer the cherry sunburst over the maroon color
I reckon the reason why 70s deluxe is underrated maybe because that year a lot of guitar companies suddenly appeared during that time.
Love the colour
Gibson didn't do the sunburst accurately to how it was done in the 70s. Back then, the sides, back, and neck were also bursted. Not so on the latest reissue.
Mini-bickers are the most versatile pickup around. Sweet as Jazz or hard as The Who.
Gibson should have followed the 1970’s design with a maple neck, a volute, chrome tulips, etc but at least they are reissuing it
In spirit. Epi should offer one.
"Blueberry burst..." he has a good memory 😂
At first I thought it was my trad pro V. I didn't know wine red was such an old LP color option. And here I thought I had gone with something more "modern" to stand out. 🥴
