I 'discovered' Alice a few weeks ago and I'm still lost for words. Never anyone like her, surely. No fakery, no conceit, no pretence, no inhibition, no affectation, the sound and seismic emotional veracity of Maria Callas' granddaughter, the wit and grit of Memphis Minnie's great granddaughter, the beauty of unadulterated actuality, and on and on till I'm useless about it all anymore. I can't keep up with myself about it. I'm so glad she exists; a bit like the way I felt and thought when I read Baldwin's 'Tell Me How Long The Train's Been Gone' in 1968 when I was 17: that there's someone there, at least someone somewhere, at least one decent human being thinking, saying and doing something, anything, scrupulous, decent, true . . . She shows up. She's all there. She shines. The first video I saw of her, I could see before she sang a note that she wasn't going to be a fake and I was so GLAD!
