    Smearing is the show stopper for me. I constantly smear my painstaking work. I love the vibrancy of oils and I know all the shortcomings of acrylic, but I've learned to work with acrylics with minimal frustration. You can add slow drying medium if you need to. The other plus is acrylics work with airbrushing, I absolutely love the airbrushed look.

    Whoa! You just saved me a myriad of issues. I've been watching paint pouring videos that use acrylic paint. I knew nothing about how fast it dries, blending, clean-up etc. i am an absolute novice who has decided to take the leap. Thanks to you, I'll start with oils instead of acrylics. 🖌🎨

      If you're interested... It's called "Eternity", painted in 2018. Dedicated to my Dad, after he passed away. One of my favourite paintings that brought me so much relief to paint while dealing with the grief.

    Hi Heather, Thank you for sharing your way of oil painting, I started off with oil but found it difficult with cleaning the brushes, I watched different artists sharing their way of cleaning but found it all such an effort in doing so never knew the quickest way to clean them, I too never enjoy the cleaning of brushes after painting would love to know your method . Thank you again for encouraging me to pick up oils again. Sylvia. 😊

    I started oil painting 12 years ago and never looked back. I agree with all you’ve said about acrylic, although I do see some beautiful acrylic paintings. I’ve not mastered acrylic and choose not to. I’ve also tried watercolor and had some success. But oils are definitely my preferred medium. Glad I happened onto your site.

    3. Washing brushes. Setting up an oil dip gives an extra week or three buffer before needing to wash brushes.

    Beginner painter. Acrylics for a few months & they dried way too fast & I did not like the plasticky feel of them.
    Oils with solvent free medium or cleaner are fantastic. Lush, many ways to lay the paint, remove the mistakes...love it.

    The longer drying time is precisely the problem: it is what causes everything to turn into mud the moment you try to layer colors. As for covering up mistakes, I find it MUCH easier to do in acrylics: you just paint over the mistake.
    Last but not least, I actually kind of like the slightly shiny surface you get with acrylics. Also, the surface quality is far more predictable. With oils, some parts of my painting retain a bit of shininess, others go matt and chalky and ugly when the paint dries. On the positive side, oils do keep one's brush strokes more visible, so it works nicely if you like that particular effect. The color also tends to be richer.
    On the whole I prefer acrylics, but I do get it in my head to so an oil now and then. It is also much better for plein air painting; acrylics needs LOTS of water, and outside they tend to dry too fast on the palette.

      Hi friend! These are some great points! I'm glad you gave oil painting a go even if you found a different art medium you enjoy! Keep creating!

      I too like the smoothness of acrylics. I actually try to remove visible brush strokes. The smearing of oils is what I can't handle - no matter how careful or using creative hand rests I will inevitably ruin my work.

    Ive painted with oils simce childhood and in my 60's i decided to try acrylics. Theyre ok for small paintings but for big paintings imho a complete waste of time and energy. Constantly fighting with drying to quickly and not being able to manipulate the paint. Ok for an underpainting thats about it. Oils are superior by far. Good tutorial Heather. What varnish medium would you recommend for oils? What do you think of Liquin? Tyia

      Hi Friend! I'm glad you enjoy using oils too!
      As for varnishing, I've had success with a couple different products by Gamblin and Langridge. But it all depends on how you want your painting to look as to which varnish you choose, as each varnish has a different finish.
      As for Liquin, I haven't tried this product before as I've never really needed my oils to dry quicker then they already do.
      Hope that helps. Happy painting!

    Hello Heather. What is the “one” medium that you use with your oils ? Thank you.

    • @heatherbradbury7134
      @heatherbradbury7134  2 дня назад +1

      Hi Friend! I use Refined Linseed Oil, from Langridge. But you can use any oil medium that feels good to you. There's lots of options on the market, and most companies sell little bottles so you can try them out before committing to a big bottle. I chose linseed oil because its fairly cheap, doesn't yellow my paints, doesn't smell, and has a drying time that works well for me. Make sure you consider these things when finding the right oil for you. Happy painting!

      @ Thank you Heather. Yes, it’s overwhelming the number of mediums out there. I have tried several, but want to simplify…..think I will also stick with either linseed or walnut oil.

    Heather have you considered WMO oils? Ive painted for years & for health reasons I made the switch to Royal Talens Cobra oils & mediums and wow they are truly beautiful no solvents cleanup in water its the easy way to paint with oils. For brush clean up Id suggest Chroma Incredible Brush Cleaner a fantastic product I leave brushes in a pot with enough cleaner to cover the feral over night rinse in water the next day so easy. Keep up the great content.😉

      @fontainerouge 3 дня назад +1

      Cobra are great paints but I've switched to traditional oils with Sennelier GreenforOils thinner (works as brush cleaner or use walnut oil) & their medium (or just linseed oil). Solvents make me sick.

    • @fontainerouge
      @fontainerouge 2 дня назад

      @@naga2015kk No, it is oil based but with some form of "soap" that makes them water mixable. You can mix with traditional oil paint but that removes their solubility in water. You can't mix them with acrylics.

      Hi friend. I chose not to go into water-mixable oils in this video as that might be a confusing topic for newbies, but it's a fantastic point! Maybe I'll do a video on the different types of oils you can get in the future. Thank you for sharing!
