Quite a treat - I never heard these improvised keyboard bits from Wakeman before, and I don't think he ever used them in later Yes and solo work.
ECCEZIONALE. In the first part of this very rare solo of 1971 (for me one of the most important and revealing of the art of RICK WAKEMAN), we find the typical classical melodic beauty of his mature piano style (although here he was only 22 years old). The 2nd part (organ Hammond&drums duo) is absolutely amazing in rock, and its melodic/rhythmic unisons are many years ahead of their time (Metal Prog ante litteram? ). Moreover, the melodic/rhythmic development of the beautiful jazz/blues phrase from min. 3:18 to 3:58 (with time doubled and then tripled) is absolutely textbook, and a real lesson for improvisation. Not to mention the extraordinary virtuosity, and the fact that there is no bass here (Wakeman does everything together with the talented drummer). Absolute genius. Evidently at 22 years he had already ground a lot of Music of all kinds. : -) Thanks for posting and... enjoy listening to this gem! : -)
Ah... you took the words right outta my mind! Nice synopsis of the track.
