    Adam described the male-on-male gaze and then spent the rest of the time trying to use evolutionary biology to combine and justify his own ideals of men instead of understanding that women often see men very differently. So, I agree with much of Loren's reasoning... dad bod's appeal because 1. They are more comfortable in physical relations. 2. They show that they aren't hyper-fixated on food/image. 3. Aren't as scary as jacked men. 4. If you really want to go the evolutionary route... the love handles means they can provide food. It's the combo of muscles and excess energy (fat) that are evolutionary indicators of success. If there were too many muscles, then it would show that they would need more food and that means less for the mate. A little extra energy storage along with a healthy frame = success.
    P.S. In an impromptu poll, out of my female hetro friends, there isn't a single one among them that doesn't find the dad bod attractive.
    PPS. Romance novel covers were mainly designed and signed off by men (male-on-male gaze) and women were sold this for years, but I think as the years go on and more women come into their own sense of self, you will see less of the Fabio-style men and more realistic men on the covers.

      @joshuavarghese8225 6 месяцев назад +6

      Well said, This was insightful! I think an episode on how the "male on male" gaze is warping how a lot of men are internalizing pretty toxic ideals. I think there is a disconnect where men are trying to change themselves for what women want, and vice versa rather than looking internally and working to be their own best for any potential or current partners.

    1. I honestly feel like when I was when I was in my late teens/early 20’s I would have responded to the idea that “we want to be the pretty one” with similar repulsion… but I can ABSOLUTELY believe that a fair chunk of gals around that age (and older) would think like that.
    2. This all reminds me about a meme where it’s like “me as a teenager” and it’s all about Legolas, then it’s like “me in my twenties” and the gal is ogling Aragorn, then it’s like “me now” and the lady is banging pots and pans shouting “SAMWISE GAMGEE IS HUSBAND GOALS!”
    3. I legit gasped when Adam didn’t know who Edward Cullen was… because I was jealous.

    My mates in mid 30s are now having children and their dad bods are decidedly overweight and trending towards obese.
    This exacerbates some common issues of early parenthood, being poor sleep, lack of energy, social isolation and depression

    • @HonoredMule
      @HonoredMule 6 месяцев назад +33

      @@Treebark1313 I don't think you're giving him enough credit. We all have seeds of shitty regressive logic lurking around in the dark corners that we don't realize are still there. Talking to other people is often the only way to unearth those blind spots. I think Lauren was far more oblivious to her own blind spots when she confidently shut down reasoning from a perspective of subconscious biological/evolutionary bias.
      I wager she'd disavow any sense of attraction to a ripped 17 year old male while still denying any relationship between what she now finds attractive and the social trappings of maturity. And yet the very concept of dad bod (to which she expresses affinity) exists primarily as a correlation to non-physical factors, regardless of their nature (but especially ones related to caregiving and providing). That's a person completely unwilling to admit her sense of physical attraction is tied (in part) to indicators of success.
      It's not even a shameful thing, but because it can be framed as such, she won't even contemplate it. She's too virtuous to be susceptible to any sense of attraction that has ties to baser instincts _or_ social opportunism. Yet excluding both of those, what's left? Safety is pretty much the only underlying motivation she was willing to admit, which I find incredulous to say the least. It's valid, but not as an _exclusive_ criteria. She doesn't even allow considering a person's future physique because that's "gross" when you're in love...even though failing to do so is actually just stupid (lack of consideration for your _own_ future lifestyle) and they were talking about physical attraction - not love.
      My wife has some significant physical health problems which affect our lifestyle now and will do so more as we get older. Those are compromises I made when I chose her, not some kind of untouchable unique perfection I'm not allowed to even consider lest acknowledging and accommodating reality be conflated with stigmatizing it. The things we cannot do together are _real._ I have significant mental health issues that affect _her_ lifestyle, and the same applies there. The accommodations she makes for me are also real. Love blinders are not a virtue, they're a pitfall.
      And there's the comparative argument Lauren bluntly rejected when framed as competition, then wholeheartedly claimed when reframed as comfort. Oblivious.
      Adam on the other hand...we were all raised in a society that comes with a pretty shitty default world view. Progressiveness isn't perfection -- it's an open mind. He says some stupid things...and then immediately takes the pushback to heart. Mind you, while it's handled in the opposite manner, I do see his desperation for _approval,_ which tends to overshoot open mindedness and stray into the territory of uncritical sycophancy when the source of approval is too important (like, notably, his wife).

    At the beginning of my Freshman year of college I was ~130lbs soaking wet (5'-9" to 5'10" depending on the time of day). I've been a runner my whole life. My roommate was a boxer, so when we started working out together, he got leaner & I put on muscle; by the beginning of my junior year, I was 159lbs & still very lean. My then girlfriend, now wife, found me uncomfortable to snuggle with, I was "too bony"; primarily, the front of my hips (superior iliac spines?) were/are prominent. After college, life happened, I continued to work out, but had a full time job, we shared an apartment, she was finishing her masters and we just wanted to spend time together when we could, and since she was not and is not into going to the gym or running, I missed more & more of my workouts, while my metabolism slowed in the background. I had also picked up brewing beer & making wine, as well as a serious interest in cooking, which didn't help. From about age 30-35 or so I had a prime "dad bod", from age 35-40 I was overweight, I peaked at 205 at the beginning of the year and got fed up with myself & started paying better attention to diet, but mixing in exercise without getting to obsessed with it. I'm no longer overweight, I'm ~167, working my way down to the 150-155 my doctor says I should be, with a target of 165 before Thanksgiving (because I'm going to enjoy Thanksgiving). When I got below 170, I took a look and saw how much soft I have still to get rid of, it's less about weight and more about bodyfat% now. If I get leaner & add muscle while staying the same weight, I'll be happy, if I get leaner while losing weight & maintaining my current build, I'll be happy; mostly just trying to be healthier; I'd like some more muscle mass, but spending time with my wife & kids is more important to me than going to the gym. She is complaining about my hips again.

    I think an issue is that the term can kind of be misleading when it's interpreted to mean a body that people kind of just have. Some people see CBum in the off-season and say he has a dad bod because he's got a slightly higher body fat percentage when he takes all the gear under the sun and has the best of the best genetics. The conversation has to be about what's reasonably attainable for men and not elevating harmful body standards, not just for body fat but also for lean mass.

    Lauren's correct on all of this. "Dad bod" doesn't imply that the guy was ever more fit or athletic than he currently is -- it just means that he is neither very fit nor very unfit. Not sure there's any EvoBio explanation for why women would find this body type attractive because I'm not sure most women actually do. Personally, I can't relate -- I remember reading the trend pieces on "dad bod" in 2015 and just not getting it at all. But maybe I'm the outlier. (I'm also bi so my tastes may differ from straight women's.)
    It also seems like even for women who do prefer a "dad bod" guy, it might be less about finding that body type the most attractive and more about deliberately choosing the not-most-attractive (but not unattractive) guy for other reasons, like the perception that Dad Bod Guy will be more nice/fun than Super Hot Guy. Again, though, Pearson's reasons just aren't relatable to me personally. I don't value being "the pretty one" in the relationship because to me, one of the main motivators for looking good in the first place is to attract an at-least-equally-good-looking mate. But to each their own.

    Calling women “Females” is not always cringe, or wasn’t, when I was in service Females was the mandated term for referring to our women shipmates. It may have changed, but in early 90’s Coast Guard “Females” was the only approved term. So it still pops out sometimes. 😁

    • @WARnTEA
      @WARnTEA 6 месяцев назад +2

      I think it makes sense and thats why I hate when people blanketly act like the word female being used at all is a red flag.
      Its important to understand the female is primarily an adjective, and using it as an adjective is great. Its only when you use it as a noun that it becomes sketchy.
      Being called a female Officer is different than just being called a female, because it assumes that the only important thing about the people you are talking about is their gender since there is no noun being attached to it.
      Also it is creepy to use female as a noun because its academic. In a lot of languages we tend to have words or phrases that are only used in academia, but would be rare for someone to say in everyday situations and conversations. We do this as a species to be able to talk about topics in a more clinical way that doesn’t corrupt the words. So using female as a noun sort of distances the person from the situation, its as if they are looking at a science experiment, and not another human being.

    • @markvetter4711
      @markvetter4711 6 месяцев назад

      @@WARnTEA it also removes the loaded language of gender. A female might be a trans female. In the process of transitioning to female. And can request female pronouns. Or, vice versa. It also leaves a neutral space for nonbinary. Not male, not female, and not going in either direction. Probably just quibbling about semantics, the people who understand, already understand. The people who don’t will just hate the new vernacular.

      It’s not that it wasn’t always cringe, we just didn’t always have the word cringe in the way we use it now… And they forced you to do something that was cringe. Being mandated to do something doesn’t make it not cringe.

    I honestly feel that the term "dad bod" means so many things that discussing whether people like it or not doesn't mean anything. I feel like most people who are positive about it think it is what you describe it to be Adam: a good amount of muscle but with some 15-20 percent body fat. It's low body fat with enough muscle for it to be obvious that the person has nice muscle or is strong, and it is nicely maintainable. You also don't have all the physical drawbacks of being extremely lean, and it's probably pretty healthy. It almost feel like a no-brainer to call a body with a good amount of muscle and no crazy low or high body fat percentage a preferred body type (on average, people have different preferences, of course) because almost no-one dislikes a bit of muscle and it's not polarising between being super shredded (which might send messages such as "not being fun" or "not cuddly" or "gym obsessed" or vain) and pretty heavy (which is disliked more on average). Then there are the people who are negative about the dad bod, and they describe it as a body that is mostly untrained and not super overweight but does have a "beer gut" with perhaps a lot of visceral fat which is probably a pretty big health risk. And then there are people who describe Mr Olympia Classic Physique winners in their off-season with a dad bod which is crazy. EDIT: probably more like 20-25 or even 20-30 percent body fat for the "positive dad bod". 15-20 is still pretty low!

    Worth noting that gay erotica has massively transformed in the last 15 years. We’ve now hit the era of twinks and bears (skinny and effeminate like Timothee Chálamet, and large 300lbs men respectively). The muscle man archetype just isn’t the center of attention anymore.

      Yeah, a whole bunch of Adam projecting why he would be attracted to a dad bod because of rationale behind said bod that he imagines. It's nice to have Lauren say, "yeah, y'know, maybe that's what would float YOUR boat"😅. Love that balance and energy.
      Also, I've long contended that guys mold themselves to be and behave as what they would be attracted to and then project onto women rather than listening to what actually makes another person tick. I think Adam fell into that one this time. No shade, just observation. I enjoyed this chat thoroughly.

Probably the opposite. And I feel like I can still get things done. Probably more than before, in fact!

    I definitely fit into the first definition posed by Adam now. But I also care about my fitness, mostly for cardio health and not appearance.
    I don’t want to look like a fitness influencer - they’re probably so tired/hungry from trying to look perfect and working out all the time, I could flatten or outrun them anyway.
    TLDR; I’m fit enough, plus I have reserves! :)

    Bi guy here. I find it is more straight men who ogle body-builders. I find the whole thing super weird (and so homo-erotic that it goes past gayness). I am more attracted to dad bod-ish men as well. I'm not sure if my experience is all that representative of gay men. And lots of MSM people seem to be attracted to more feminine presenting men, or rather heavy set/higher body fat men. The gay community even has names for these body types--though I also find that tribal identification kind of weird.
    Also commenting just to call out the point that bi people get forgotten in these conversations about the difference between gay and straight men. There are probably about the same number or more bi men as gay men, though 80%+ are not out.
