I came to the comments to just write how much I loved this conversation only to see so many being critical of the interviewer for dominating the conversation. While I certainly can see why that kind of interviewing style would bother someone, especially when the guest is as brilliant as Michaela Coel, I really never found myself being annoyed or finding any fault in how this was conducted. Had they no personal history between each other, absolutely, this kind of freelance approach would seem unprofessional, but I think it works in this one being that the interviewer is able to leverage their friendship to ask questions that another interviewer might not thing to ask. I feel like we get to see a window into the philosophical/spiritual side of Michaela Coel here, which I absolutely love!
That was an interesting and safe interview. I guess Katy Brand didn't feel very comfortable asking questions to dig into some of the content from Michaela's speech that focused more on experiencing racism or challenges around inclusivity and equality or sexual assault.
Exactly my observation!!! I'm really disappointed in Katy Brand and what seemed a deliberate exercise in avoiding the more sticky points of Michaela's lecture!! I also felt powerfully aware of the nurture and protection of the culture of racism/discrimination.. the culture of exclusion. Why explore these issues of systemic racism and exclusion, when we can focus on where 'You thought or felt YOU were wrong about a Malaysian actress'. I am so fed up with white fragility.
Given that Michaela's speech and this interview took place in the same week that Loan (Kelly) Tran wrote this: www.nytimes.com/2018/08/21/movies/kelly-marie-tran.html And similarly, many media outlets shifted her whole conversation to focus on "online harrassment". The consequence of that kind of discomfort with racism and exclusion is that journalists and others empowered to explore what is happening in the world and share that with the masses.... well, those journalists and interviewers basically fail us all by telling such a limited version of the truth. This kind of failure runs the risk of negating Michaela and Loan's efforts to be honest and share a reality with the masses that many of us live through daily. Not talking about it suggests that it is unimportant or invalid. As upsetting as it is for you and me, I can't imagine how Michaela felt after laying her life so bare and speaking her truth for like an hour. Then, having a friend and colleague suppress that truth for about the same amount of time.
@@arlenerae6902 to them they don't understand anything about racism as it doesn't happen to them as much as it happens to people of color, if it happens at all. Europeans have a very evil background and a price to pay, the only thing that is saving them if they are being saved if GOD'S grace.
Yes. It felt like a contradiction, considering Michaela's lecture emphasised on being *transparent * It was like this interview was designed to mute Michaela or restrain her so that she couldn't go into further detail on race and on sexual assault in the industry.
@@topgurl9313 THIS EXACTLY. Sums up exactly how I felt. I don't know anything about the interviewer but it felt like she was there specifically to squelch Michaela's voice.
I was waaaaY past 'kinda'. I simply wished they had a more experienced interviewer who could match Michaela's intellect. That woman talk too much and dwell on the superficial. She simply missed the essence of Machaela's Mac Taggart Interview.
Call her a coke head, nervous and can you just confirm all my preconceptions and can I talk over you as much as possible. It sounds very plausible that Katy Brand is doing a hit-job to silence her or the most generous option would be that Katy has zero listening skills in combination to being quite uncomfortable to talk about race or to be quiet for a moment. Michaela is on to her the moment she starts talking about being curious as there is no real curiosity from the interviewer. And Michaela also hints at "willing to be wrong". Falls on deaf ears. Kate would have been more effective if she just sat on her. Instead she calls her poem shit and keeps digging to actually insult Michaela, who is sharp and is able to laugh this exubarant laugh: 15:26. Stay true to yourself Queen Michaela - do not let the bastards grind you down.
Love your comments. All true. Michaela is so intuitive. Personally, I would have shut that woman up! I think Michaela didn't want to make her look stupid. I couldn't believe what she chose to focus on.
honey bozo agreed this is really hard to watch and Katy isn’t listening she’s giving some sort of thesis on the mind of a creative and using Michaela as some sort of lab rat to prove her theory, which is not only inappropriate it’s ridiculous.
"As people climb higher and higher, their perspective narrows and there is no time for reflection ..." cold & distant interviewer and you can see it in the responses from Michaela,,,,,,,,and it started right from the beginning...Michaela-"why are we so distant" , Interviewer - "hmm"......

Oh that would be a real treat. Make it soon though MC...I'm running out of good story books to read to my 4 God children. 5yrs and under!
This interviewer did more talking than Michaela. Aside from that, great hearing from Michaela!!
She's clearly still very spiritual. This was wonderful.
