We were blown away by the beauty of the rail trails through the Hudson Valley and by the unexpected Walkway Over the Hudson. Have you ridden any of these trails and if so, were you as amazed as we were?
I'm in Florida but planning to ride Albany to New York in August. Thanks for the video. 😊
Watched here in the Queen Victoria Falls country of Zambia. Brian Kabaso.
Cool videos.
Brewster! Such nice town. I Live along the Hudson in Rensselaer County and I hope to bike some of this some day, maybe even to my old home near the Verrazano
Kinderhook is my local cycling area. Great back roads and relatively safe traffic. Beautiful country.
We enjoyed riding through there very much:)
I rode the Empire trail from Valatie to Hudson today and will go back soon to do the north section. It is a great trail so far.
This looks wonderful on a cold winter day
I bike over the Dunn Bridge to work this summer
Kinderhook!
My home area trails. The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is one mile from my home.
I just did this part last month. I hated that bridge into Kingston. Maybe because I was carrying all my gear but hitting those grates on the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge was jarring and if you move over to avoid the grates, the cars are right there.
Love it, Walkway over the Hudson is a great time accompanied with The Dutchess. Great ride you guys, music reminds me of Jerry. Awesome video.
Great videos. Used these videos to help me with my tour. I did Buffalo to NYC in 11days at the end of September 2023. I could not be more supportive of anyone planning to do this. You'll remember this forever.
Some people asked about how to navigate and being afraid of getting lost. Id say it is very well signed. Things can get a little tricky during detours, but nothing major.
At the very beginning of this video it shows them taking a walk/bike ramp to go over the Hudson. That ramp is closed for work (does not look like anything is actually being done. Anyway, one needs to go back north (around 3/8th of a mile) and take a car ramp. The bike will happen on the shoulder which is fenced with wood from the cars. Not a big deal.
Enjoy and reach out if you need any suggestion/help.
I live near Kinderhook. Just got a bike and took my first spin on the trail last night, to North Chatham. I would love to see more detail, such as your routes through Hudson and Poughkeepsie.
You can find the route of the Empire State Trail route at empiretrail.ny.gov. The Hudson Valley Greenway section is the trail system you are interested in.
You guys are doing so awesome with this series. That's a bucket list trail for me...
Sara, What an excellent video series on the Empire State Trail. Darley Newman is also offering a PBS video during Feb. 2022. "Travels with Darley", episode #905.
Thank you for the kind words.
I guess you guys have no fear of heights..... I have a big problem there, especially with that one bridge at about 4:30. I wish I could overcome this.
Sounds like you parked the vehicle and both bike toured to NYC, overnighting along the way, then rode back to your vehicle (?). Logistics is always a challenge on a bike tour, especially if dont have a vehicle.
Wonder how Amtrak is running with bike roll-on between Albany & NYC...and to Rouses Point area.
Could you label #1, #2 etc on your video titles?
Thanks so much for these videos. Planning on doing this route next September. There seems to be a lot of trails to roads to trails. How is the signage on the roads overall? I'm a little concerned about getting lost and biking 10 miles in the wrong direction about 20 times! I've ordered the map, but the countless road portions and "cross-overs" concerns me a little. I did the GAP / C&O last year. Impossible to get lost on that ride.
great video!
im thinking about riding from Albany down to the city this summer in two days.
I was wondering when your on the road sections...is the route clearly marked?
any other tips or suggestions you could give me would be greatly appreciated
thanks
Thanks! I felt like the route was really well marked other than maybe a short section in the Bronx (? just as you enter the city basically). I'd recommend having the interactive Empire State map available to you for that. You can also look for downloadable mapping online (Ride w/ GPS, etc) although make sure to review it for accuracy against the EST map as some people will make alterations. Last option would be to look out for our Empire State Trail blueprints coming in April. It will include accurate Ride with GPS mapping of the route available for download to your devices. Enjoy the trip!
