    My childhood embodied in a comic right there. Used to get this delivered every Saturday morning .It was my baptism to the Marvel universe. Remember the iron on Hulk transfer which lasted about a month before cracking and peeling off my tee shirt. #2 had a Spiderman transfer as i recollect.Collected them for years

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  Год назад +2

      Yes, I had the transfers and used them, they didn't last very long. I suspect that some still have them unused though I wonder if they are still in a great state, surely they would curl with time. MWOM was a favourite. Noticed at the London comic mart that a few more dealers are offering those old mags, along with Titans / Spider-Man weekly etc. My garage used to be full of those old UK mags.

    It's always good to see that book, one of my favourite comics of all time. I managed to pickup a nice condition copy a few years back to replace my tatty version I had from way back in 1972 as a child. Nice to see so many folk revisiting this comic and writing about it the past month

      50th anniversary I guess, perhaps the Spider-man Weekly will get the same love in the next 20 weeks or so. I have seen some nice copies of this comic, I am happy with mine. It will outlive me probably.

    Oh wow, love the use of adding green especially on that Hulk strip. All star line up, I think thats why Marvel UK comics sold so well, packed full. I remember Hulk Weekly had a paper cover like that too, that was great fun, poor Hulk always hounded, I liked the Black Knight strip in that. Super Spider-Man and its landscape format, that was unusual but fun. Marvel Super-Heroes was a good one, glossy cover, black and white, had Avengers and maybe Uncanny X-Men reprints and eventually the return of Captain Britain. Probably lots of comics I cant remember but I know they had all the big names, FF, Defenders, Thor, and other things like Dominic Fortune, Starlord, Deathlok, Night Raven.

      They brought out lots and lots of different titles, got so many I lost track. I have bought odd ones over the years, they turn up often in my local charity shop for 10p or so. I liked the Black Knight stories as well, Captain Britain wasn't bad. The landscape ones were great, always a favourite with more stories and nice and compact.

    Now that has made me feel old! As I think I have mentioned to you before my original copy has long gone but l still have my Spiderman signed postcard which I received in response to my letter to MWOM saying how excited I was that Marvel had launched in the UK.

      Good to have it signed by Spidey or was it Peter Parker ? I have only about 10 old UK mags, I occasionally pick them up at the comic marts but not actively buying them all again. Yes, it is surprising that it is the 50th anniversary week for that comic !!

    Tatty or not, you're a real lucky so-and-so to have one! I agree with you on the Chip Kidd FF Panel by Panel book - an absolute must have book. Can't wait for the Spider-Man Panel-by Panel one coming out next year. So long to wait...

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  Год назад +1

      Yes, the Spidey / Chip book sounds good, will be getting that once it is out. I had most of the Marvel UKs, bought them each week and loved them and re-read them a zillion times. Wish I had kept a few more of them but they took up a lot of space.

    Yes you are right that early period of the MWOM's was without doubt the golden age of Marvel UK cant believe its 50 years since # 1 came out , where do the years go ? I can remember now how excited I was every week waiting for them.

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  Год назад +1

      I was also. I think I was more excited by the latest MWOM / Spidey / Avengers than any of the US comics (though those 100 Page DC giants always came close). It was the regular weekly treat. Now got them in omnis or epics or essentials but they will still never match the thrill of picking up that set of three issues (as well as the disappointment when they were not yet in and had to wait another day or two). Had piles of them all over the place. I did get all the transfers etc but they have all long gone.

      @@captain_uk Yes, Weekly was always good but then again, the Monthlies were always all over the place and so I picked them up here, there and everywhere (to quote the Beatles). The weeklies were from my local newsagent so I had them on order and picked them up as they arrived, nearly as the string was cut. Of course, we often also had to wait for the 2nd part of the story.

    First time I got a Marvel comic was a Fantastic Four that I found on the pavement with the cover ripped off must have been around 1968 I was smitten and my mam got me some more from the local newsagents, then later I saw Mighty world of Marvel advertised on the telly and it changed my little life, i liked them all but had a soft spot for Dracula Lives and Planet of the Apes. thanks.

      I always remember picking the comics up at my local barbers as well as being used as the paper for fish and chips (not that it was easy to follow the story that way). I never saw MWOM advertised on TV, my Mum did pick up the first issue for me (still recall that moment). I also liked the Dracula and POTA weeklies, bought most of them.

      Im sure the advert was voiced by Stan Lee offering free gifts one of which I remember was a square paper bag with Spideys mask on it , Stan didnt waste money did he? also two of my bedroom walls were covered with the posters from the back pages , even the Mole man was up there, lol thanks.@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews

      Yes, I wonder how many of those special gifts survived, I know I used them instantly and they were wrecked by the next day. I also did stick up a few posters, not sure I would have put the Mole Man up on the wall though !!

      It is quite possible there was a Daredevil Thor and Iron Man comic but the timeline of those titles after 1980s is totally lost on me, there were so many UK mags and titles and many I keep discovering even today

A bit later i gave up on the superheroes in favour of Marvel Uk's Dracula Lives and Planet of the Apes which came out in 73 or 74.

      That issue blew me away so much. Here's a story for fellow fans: I was so busy glancing through my new issue on the handle bars of my lime green racing bike that I hit a stationary Jenson FF, my favourite car down my road...It knocked out my two front teeth and my blood was all over the bonnet. I assumed the owner was rich he was more worried about me than his car. I was staggering and half crying clutching my comic which I'd retrieved from the road, He checked me over and and gave me the good to go signal. Ironically, once I got home a minute later I couldn't read my daredevil story until I'd stopped bleeded for fear of wrecking the comic. Still have it to this day. the happy ending is I later worked for marvel UK as an artist. :)

      I never bought more than 1, I still remember getting it late in the evening after returning from a football match and had to wait for the next day to read it. I was a lifelong fan of Marvel (and DC) after getting that comic. Don't think I have ever seen a near mint copy at a comic mart of that issue, probably goes for a lot
