    honestly you're putting out some great content and this was an excellent video on compression! so many people with big followings act like they're experts on EVERY SUBJECT and give bad information out and newbies don't know better since they see the clean thumbnail, the like ratio, the sub number, etc. that's the sad truth about youtube learning. people kinda pretend they're experts when they're really not and they make ad revenue and sponsors off of giving bad info to newbies who don't know better. haha so thank you for the quality content you produce.

      1. Mix in mono
      2. Reference similar tracks

    Hey Tony! I have a question about compression. When adding Compression to each piece of drums or instruments should we run the eq first and then compression? Then from their add what it needs to enhance the sound, you the sparkles to make the kick sound deep and punchy. Also should I gain stage first before adding EQ and Compression? Thanks Man! I really find your videos informative and engaging then any video on RUclips really love the tutorials!

    • @itstonyholiday
      @itstonyholiday  4 года назад +1

      Hey, great question! There’s no definitive answer to this other than you need to try all avenues of what you said. Putting plugins before and after each other in different ways will effect the tracks differently so it really is different every time. The best way to do this is to learn exactly the purpose of what everything does and know when to use it. As for gain staging, yes you need to gain stage it throughout each of the plugins signal flow, which is the “staging” portion of it. I generally EQ, Compress, and then add the extra stuff after that but again it really depends what you’re trying to achieve 👍
      Hope that helps, thanks for watching and the great question

    • @EDGARFIEDTV
      @EDGARFIEDTV 4 года назад +1

      @@itstonyholiday Thanks for the reply! Much appreciated sir! Ill try that out! Yeah I would gain stage before adding EQ, Compression and I would notice that some would start to Clip and etc. Should I gain stage before and after adding the plugins? Sorry if I'm wording stuff weird lol I'm trying to learn the technical stuff during quarantine. Btw will their be future video where you check out viewers beats and give advice? that would be awesome!

    • @itstonyholiday
      @itstonyholiday  4 года назад +2

      @EDGARFIEDTV No worries, it can be difficult to describe techniques over text. So for gain staging you basically want to make sure that you're not clipping at any stage of the signal flow.
      For example:
      1. If you had a synth like Alchemy playing a chord progression, it comes out of the synth at -3, you're fine.
      2. Next you EQ it. It starts to clip a little bit so you bring it back down below 0 using the gain knob in the EQ plugin.
      3. You toss on a compressor and really smush it and add some makeup gain to give the sound you want. It's clipping again, so you turn the output gain in the compressor down to below zero.
      Effectively managing the clipping levels at every stage of the signal flow 👍
      As for future videos I have definitely thought about doing a livestream where I critique peoples songs and stuff for sure! I have a couple of other things in the works first (like finishing this drum kit) but then I definitely want to!

    • @itstonyholiday

      Hey, it takes a lot of practice and training your ears to hear the difference sometimes. The best way to get better is to make a really big compressed track that's side chained and then turn it on and off to understand what you're looking for. After that, adjust to taste.

      @@sandronohl8969 I mean, we could sit here all day and trade stories of who said to do it and who didn't. The truth is sometimes I do it and it sounds good, other times it doesn't... Hey man, glad you found it helpful! You’re going to find that each compressor acts differently and your best bet is to read about them on the Apple Logic webpage. This was very helpful thanks man! I have a question I looked at the apple website about the different compressors and I see that the VCA compressor is made for bass guitars. Well I did a subsonic bass using the vs2 I believe and the lower notes sounds good (shake my car lol) but I go a few notes above and you can barely hear these bass notes. Well I used the Platinum Digital and tested the bass again sounds good, now the higher notes actually shake my car, but it’s kinda distorted. Honestly I didn’t know how the compressor actually works when I did this but if the higher notes now are more present that means I did something bad or no? And would you recommend to try the VCA or just adjust the treshold, ratio and attack on the Platinum Digital and try it?
    I hope you understood what I’m trying to say, thank you bro!

    • @itstonyholiday
      @itstonyholiday  3 года назад

      Hey man! The compressors that are built into Logic are based on real hardware compressors so they’re more or less a guideline. The best rule of thumb is, if it sounds good/the way you want. Go with that 👍

    Hi, I really don't understand how this compressor works! Can you explain it to me? So what does the treshhold stand for,? when for example its set to -20 , every decibel is cut out , or is it the ratio that reduces the loudness? and the make up gain basically just makes the track louder, right? haha I got probably everything wrong

    • @itstonyholiday

      The threshold represents the volume level that the compressor will start to compress. The ratio is by how much it will compress.
