I decided to check out twitch for the first time in a thousand years to see if the news was true. The first stream under the art section had a thumbnail of an anthropomorphic dog “burying his bone” in another.

Twitch has been dwindling for years now, it went from almost having a monopoly on streaming, to begging and pleading for creators to return. Everything that’s happened to twitch has been because of themselves.
Seems Facebook is not that big on live streaming either. The only e-sports scene I see at least ended their contracts with the 2 biggest in the space. But yes Lewis has good point; Twitch is desperate if they need the p0rn money to survive, just like Twitter that also does not make money even pre-musk.
My biggest problem with this is that the sexual stuff is accessible by minors on a platform that is known among adults primarily for gaming. If twitch wants to branch out to 18+ content, fine, but it needs to be properly gated like literally every 18+ site is.
I also find your point about twitch dying because their monopoly is over really interesting. I've been on RUclips for over a decade, and one of the things that I've seen talked about is whether any real competition for RUclips would take off. There's been a few attempts, but none of them have stuck. Twitch was in a similar position a few years ago, but then they mismanaged things so badly that competitors actually were able to get the upper hand. I don't think RUclips is on that trajectory, but if the current problems get substantially worse then it might.
I can see my country (germany) banning twitch if they catch wind of this, just like they banned any sexual content on steam.

Block of text TL;DR Twitch is toxic and the model of the product is inherently dishonest and insidious.
Twitch has always been in a weird place due to the platform monetizing and rewarding parasocial relationships so heavily. They setup a camsite with SFW content, ran it like a camsite, and then pulled a surprised Pikachu face every time people formed unhealthy parasocial relationships with their favorite streamers. YT, due to not being as livestream focused, has always had more of a barrier and clear boundary of entertainer and audience rather than entertainer and "community". Twitch's entire model is about driving engagement through the parasitic nature of parasocial interaction. It always turns toxic. It never goes anywhere good. It always results in echo chambers and powertripping. Once you lose that entertainer vs audience boundary, it gets really messy.
It also turns out that interacting with thousands daily in parasocial interactions is not good for someone's mental health. Who could have guessed? Twitch is in an "always has been" astronaut holding gun meme situation with unsalvagable toxicity. And I don't just mean the conventional, I think the entire curated experience is unhealthy for most people involved. I don't think we're so special or advanced as a species to be able to properly process what an experience like live streaming does to our brains long term, on either end of the equation.

Always great to hear your take. A lot of what you're talking about sounds like a simple NSFW setting for apps/sites where adults can opt in but children can't. Provided it actually worked, it'd be great because you could use it for work too, not just based around age. If that could effectively be implemented universally then it would solve a lot of problems, but obviously nobody has worked out how yet, things are too easy to work around.
The other interesting one is the following size though. You actually specify the audience size for the NSFW content creators having minor followings on other platforms, and most people don't do that. If a school teacher did one porn shoot 20 years ago, I don't think they should be blocked from that job, but actively engaging millions of kids when you're concurrently making that content, yeah that does sound like a problematic thing. It doesn't seem outlandish to say that maybe if someone is committing to a NSFW career, they are limiting themselves to that field or content style, but it sounds much like how people used to talk about tattoos, so I've got no idea what's gonna happen. It definitely seems wrong right now, but I have no idea where it's gonna go in future, and I'm curious to find out. I hope you keep making videos about this stuff too, because (at least as far as I see) nobody else is talking about this kind of thing in any amount of detail.

@@mehemynxm6974 i think the logic is that twitch is big enough that many people already have their payment information saved so it's easier for them to get baited into spending. Not many people make porn sites accounts. It's not rly about the age.
It drives traffic and acts as a preview/hook. If we are not assuming a more insidious grooming intent and the sexworker in question marks the stream as 18+, doesn't flash people on stream and break TOS, and bans anyone under 18, then it's simply the same as any other entity purchasing a billboard in times square. Not everyone will like it, but everyone will see it.

The thing that twitch has going for it currently is the community + chat experience.
Emotes, emote culture and the chat system on twitch are great and streamers like Ludwig who moved to RUclips have stated that this was one of the main things that ruined the experience both for the streamer and their chat.
Although sites like Kick are now seeking to emulate it.
RUclips heavily lagging behind in this regard.
I went on twitch a few weeks ago, my account is literally only following minecraft streamers, mostly small aussies ones I randomly find, but for some reason my homepage was full with naked chicks, I was really hoping no one was about to walk in in that split second
The last point was bery interestinf, and def has me worried.
I saw on twitter that morgpie, probably the most famous "almost titty" streamer was actually fully clothed during those streams, which is definitely interesting. To Lewis' point at the end about pornstars not making content for children as well, I dont think the issue is them attracting children, I think the issue the ease of access that porn currently has. It really isnt the pornstars fault that their sfw content might lead people to their nsfw content. As an example, Margot Robbie was in the Barbie movie, and she also went topless in Wolf of Wall Street, but parents wont let their kids watch Wolf of Wall Street so it's not as big a deal. She should be allowed to do both, and so should the pornstars, but that will only happen if more parents block porn websites or porn websites find better ways to prevent children from accessing them.

Honestly I started streaming on Twitch 7 years ago & watching Twitch lose it's mind and changing it's policies (I like some of the change mind you) BUT it's really disheartening to see and hear that I may have picked a platform that's just declining so I'm so at a lose. if twitch just slowly starts to give more and more of their cut over time, it's currently 50/50, but if they changed it right now to 55/45 (the streamers getting 55) then in half a year change it to 60/40, then another half year 65/35, then people will start to come back to twitch because they'll see twitch is slowly increasing everyone revenue, when will they stop?
I'm honestly not that surprised by how this is going. Twitch being exclusively based on live streaming really hurts it compared to other places that provide live-streaming. Even with websites like Kick, Twitch has just been super shady lately that it's definitely not that bad of an idea to switch.

On a more serious note though, I think there's a market for adult-oriented streaming that's not necessarily sexual but also doesn't have to censor itself ("unalive" or "P.-nice" for example) and constantly be on edge avoiding words that are deemed bad for advertising. TikTok makes people write words like "seggs" or "k1!!1ng" unironically, youtube is a minefield when it comes to what you can and can't say without getting demonetized, and it often seems very arbitrary when people get demonetized, but Twitch could be something like what Elon Musk pretends Twitter has become. I hope twitch doesn't get overrun by nazis though

I think this decision is bad, especially due to the recent policies and laws that are currently being put in place around pornography in the UK.

I don't mean to take sides and maybe I gathered data on bad timing. However, at said moment degenerate live streams amounted to approximately 2-3% of other popular categories combined ("Just chatting" + top 7 games), obviously excluding the firstly mentioned type of livestreams. Therefore, I don't see how Twitch is desperate for this kind of live streams and how exactly the company needs it in order to survive. The way I see it is that Twitch tried to give these degens more freedom in terms of exercising their right to stream in exchange for less discoverability. Regardless, I still think the problem won't be solved until this kind of content is explicitly separated from sfw streams, and as for the future image of Twitch we'll just have to wait and see, however I doubt the possibility of it being known for smt else than nerds playing video games.

The made no announcement claiming they are goiing to fix this problem. Infact in there new TOS Twitch sayes that certain firm of sexual content will be allowed in untagged categories.

I think the thing that frustrates me the most is that there are tons of streaming sites for porn, including nsfw art streams, but instead of going to these places built for adults these sexual streamers instead wanted to go to the globally recognized kids site. Eh, you say that, but the demographic that played CoD in 2004-2008 are adults. As long as Twitch does not enforce their own guidelines or write new ones that make the site designed around gaming (or have an 18+ section) then it will be used as a backpages for sexwork. The same as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Kik, Telegram, and so on. In business you are supposed to diversify your reach. There will always be people who have a conscience and think about time and a place, but there will also be people who will sell you their mixtape at a bus stop, so to speak. Non stop hustling. It is on Twitch to do their jobs and either rebrand, reatructure, or ban it.

idk how they are pushing any boundaries tbh. Twitch ToS banned no shirt streams for a while but they simply didn't ban everyone that streamed topless because in the end, once you are reported an admin will decide. So it's not so much that they pushed boundaries it's just that the admins are inconsistent as fuck and there is a lot of "i know this guy" that many people don't know (which also helps you get better revenue share).
It's true that they are allowing that shit for money now but saying that they girl streamers with boobs out were smart about the ToS isn't really true. They are just betting on making enough money for twitch to be kept in. Which is the same thing many streamers did when streaming on other simul-cast wasn't allowed, some people still did cuz twitch wouldn't try to ban them.

While I agree they have been forced to change but it’s a win win as they have given sex industry workers a platform to start on before OF - that industry is huge and creators have been in a similar fight on where to post their content. For twitch to be ‘forcibly’ invite to create soft content is huge.

It's a difficult subject, but I think kids need to see it to an extent definitely more now. But your example of a pornstar live streaming Minecraft (provided seperate accounts and nothing inappropriate for children) why can't they do it sensibly? Introduce pornstars to kid as people.
