  • If you like Distitch Selvedge, please use it in your projects. However please always give full credit, and use the correct title: DISTITCH SELVEDGE BY ASSIA BRILL.
If you are a designer and are planning to use Distitch Selvedge in your work, I’m flattered! But PLEASE CONTACT ME BEFORE publishing your design. Thank you!
Distitch gives a beautiful, even and firm selvedge - use it as a decorative edge that doesn’t loosen with wear.
When working in Garter stitch, Brioche, or other vertically compressed stitch patterns, it’s better to use slip DS selvedge, in which the selvedge stitch is worked every second row. This is achieved by slipping the first stitch of every row, and working the last stitch as a Distitch. Remember, because each slipped Distitch is stretched over 4 rows, it gathers the vertical edge, so it needs to be worked looser than the body stitches.
Different ways of slipping the first stitch at the beginning of the row give open or closed chains of stitches on the edge. The closed chain (light blue) consists of twisted stitches and is narrower and tighter. The open one is wider and much looser (beige). Try both to decide which is best for your project.
To understand how easy it is done, watch this short video. Full instructions are in the next longer video.
The closed chain DS selvedge shown in previous videos.
The book "Distitch: a new knitting concept" is now available from Amazon.

That is beautiful! Question: if knitting a pattern with X number of stitches specified, should 2 extra stitches be cast on ?

      Thank you!
Yes, you need two extra stitches - one for each selvedge.

I tried this method and I get loose loops on both ends...

How loose or tight the stitches are, depends on a personal style of knitting, yarn tension, sometimes the type of yarn and many other factors...
