What most people don’t realize is that although Joe is talented and passionate about music, he is naturally gifted at teacher others lessons
A mark of a good teacher though, is one who realizes the wisdom of others around him , and learns with the student.
Pixar somehow finally managed to answer the question "What is the meaning of life?"
To live.
And to help others along the way. Kindness, Love and friendship are VERY important. Basically how do you leave others feeling after they encounter you. Do you leave a blessing or a trauma?

The overall message is great
“Follow your dreams but don’t make them the main purpose on why you exist.”
I just realized yet another big thing:
Joe was in the zone when he was auditioning, but not when he was actually performing.
Meaning even though he was on point and didn't miss a single note, he wasn't actually enjoying himself.

This movie changed my life. I was going through an existential crisis during 2020 and I felt like I lost hope. This movie made me see things differently and I’m happy for where I am now.

Same here. This film got me through the worst of my depression. Just goes to show the power of a beautiful film.
Neat little thing you could miss:
When Joe shows 22 his memories, there's one where he's sitting in a diner with a piece of pie, looking dejected, making you think it's a sad memory.
But when Joe's at the piano and we see that montage of memories, we see the diner scene again, and we find out it was actually a happy memory, despite not starting out ao great.
It's like the hockey memory in Inside Out. It started off sad, but because of her friends and the team, it turned happy.
Director Pete Docter sure knows how to share how we may see things differently in regards to our emotions.
Inside Out and Soul belong to him.
Because the lesson is "appreciate the little things". Wether it be "just walking" or in this case, enjoying your favorite meal.
This movie is absolutely beautiful. I love the creative ways it explains the afterlife, the "beforelife", and being in the zone. And more than that, I love the message of it all. Life isn't about what you were "born to do" or finding your purpose, because nobody really has one. Life is about living it to the fullest, really enjoying it, doing what makes you happy. And it's a beautiful message indeed.
I couldn't have said it better.
There was an alternate ending for this movie originally featuring the true fate of 22.
The film ended with Joe returning to Earth, but it then moves sometime months later with him at his classroom desk working on student papers. He then hears a knock on his door but before he can answer it, he overhears a voice from behind the door of a young girl complaining to her mom that she hates playing piano. Joe recognizes this voice, so he opens it revealing the girl to be 22 in human form. Delighted, they are finally reunited.
It was already storyboarded, but director Pete Docter decided against it saying he wanted a different emotional impact.

Just rewatched this and forgot how good this was. Would’ve loved to see it in theaters, but at the end of the day, I’m glad I at least saw it.

Love the little touch where they don't show the title card until the very end, to signify that's when his life finally starts
This was a really well crafted ending. I love that they didn't answer the question of if he went back to teaching of performing, or a combination of both. Because that wasn't the important part of the story.
I love that the message is "enjoy the little things". Whether that be "sky watching or walking" as 22 said, and Joe says "that's just regular old living. And that right there is the point. He is taking his life for granted by not appreciating everything. Appreciate life, whether its something as big as getting the gig of your life, or as small as going for a walk, looming at the clouds in the sky, or eating a delicious slice of pizza.
Soul is yet another example as to why I love PIxar. It took very complex topics like death, after life, passions, purpose and this thing called life and made it accessible for anyone to interpret. Its one of those movies that really does makes you think about your own life. That's the sign of a great movie! And of course the music is amazing!
This movie hit hard because as an artist, my whole identity and even worth as a human had become how my paintings turns out and my skills (or lack of) are. It's still hard to let go of that, but at least now I understand that it isn't what my purpose is, just my spark
I think it would have been good either way - to have Joe come back to Earth at the end or to have accepted his fate to the great beyond. Both endings are justified. But perhaps the people at Pixar thought it was just a little too heavy for a movie that kids might enjoy to talk about accepting death.
For me, this film is the crowning achievement of Pixar.
The different characters in this movie are very amazing. And the movie itself is just awesome.
This is one of the most beautiful films I have had the pleasure of watching! This film got me through a lonely first year of university when things were so confusing being away from home! Glad you liked it too 😄

The idea of lost souls remind me of the song lost stars, sometimes we’re too focused on one thing thinking it’ll lead us to the right path, who knows we’ll be stepping out of the way and running in circles without even knowing bcs maybe it’s not the path we’re supposed to choose.
“Youth is wasted on the young” hits hard, we’re too drained by the idea of success that by the time we reach a certain age, we’ll have no youthfulness to spare.
Movie has heart. It's also relatable how for some, we are told we have no purpose or we aren't remarkable. To anyone who hears that, screw them. You matter and just enjoy life.
Definitely an underrated and a very inspirational movie in my opinion.
My favourite movie theory is that 22 could be anyone one of us.

Man, did this movie put Pixar back on top again, because this was a pretty good movie visually and artistically.
"I may not have invented blood transfusions, but I'm most definitely saving lives."
I coincidentally also had dreams of being a veterinarian like Dez. Life got complicated, my interests changed, and so that's no longer my trajectory anymore. I dwelled on this for years though, wishing I could have stayed on that clear path, dreading having to figure out what comes next. But man, that quote still sucks the air right out of me. Truly, *anything* we end up doing in life can (and should) hold that same weight of value and dignity, even when old aspirations are put away or forgotten. Such a deep and inspirational film. And perfectly hits the nail that the purpose of life is simply to live.
this movie came out during the lockdown and was something we all needed at the time.
This is one of those movies that I wouldn’t show every kid but for those learning about death it would be really important.
Well well, the moment has finally come. I'm glad you finally got to watch this absolute masterpiece of a movie, Tim!❤

I may have to rewatch Soul again (because I’ve only seen it once, don’t ask) so that I can take the time to really understand the story and perhaps have a different opinion on it than before.
I’ve seen it twice and it had me question life’s meaning. I see why it won an Oscar.
@@twist58 On the day of this reaction post, I rewatched Soul and it certainly got me thinking. It’s story was a lot more deeper than I remember and my opinion on the film really did change to a more positive one.

There are so many nuggets in this movie but for me, the biggest one is the scene with Dorothea when she tells Joe the story about the young fish... The young fish is looking for "the ocean" because the idea of the ocean sounds so grand. But when you're actually in the ocean.... it's just water.
Joe thinks he's not living his dream but what he claims to be in love with is playing music. As a music teacher, he does play music - every, single day. Yet he's unfulfilled because "middle school music teacher" doesn't sound grand. But it is literally his dream - he is a professioinal, full-time musician. He just doesn't appreciate it.
I seriously don’t get how that movie is underrated even though it won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film last year
People have a short term memory
People mostly remember Turning Red, that Buzz lightyear movie and compare it to Dreamworks Puss and Boots and The Bad Guys and talk about how good Dreamworks has become and how shitty has become when we have this gem right here!
I think people compare these movies cause they're all action packed and Soul is just... Soulful 😂

Soul isn’t underrated. It’s the best Pixar film ever!
The movie isn't underrated at all ! Many people find it's one of the best Pixar movies. It received the Oscar of best animated movie in 2021. Soul learns us to enjoy the life when we can do it yet. The metaphysical aspect is well done and 22 is a really fun character.
Man to see this if covid19 didn’t wreck everything… I’d love to seen this in theaters and I know I would along with the audience he crying at the deep parts.
In my top 5 Pixar movies for a reason. For me, it even tackled real life issues better than Inside Out
This is such a good movie, but I probably wouldn't want to come back like he was trying to do, just send me to heaven.

Fun Fact: This Movie Was Originally Gonna Be In Theaters In June 2020 But Because Of The Coronavirus Pandemic The Film Was Delayed Until November 2020 Then It Was Gonna Come Out In 2020 But Unfortunately Got Delayed Until December 25th 2020 Which Was During Christmas Day And It Was The 1st Pixar Movie To Not Go Into Theaters It Was The 1st Pixar Movie To Get Sent To Disney+ Which Also Happened With Luca In June 18th 2021 And Of Course Turning Red On March 11th 2022 Last Year That Wasn’t Until Lightyear Finally Went To Theaters On June 17th 2022 And Now Pixar’s Upcoming Movie: Elemental Will Arrive Until June 2023 This Year Let’s Hope Elemental Will Go To Theaters And Not Disney+
This movie is amazing but I’m an adult. While some parents may have been worried about it centering around death and the afterlife I simply think many young kids would find it boring. Feels like the movie’s intended audience was adults, which I don’t hate as an adult who enjoys animated movies.

I learned a lesson when I watched this movie when it came out. I have learned that it's okay to take it slow and enjoy life because we live once. The message of this movie is also the same teaching my dad tells me many times so i am happy you liked it.

This movie reminds me that the greatest delight in life is not having a specific purpose other than to simply live the best life I can. Will it be perfect and happy all the time? Of course not. Will there be parts that are really hard? Absolutely. But its mine to live😊

The problem with this movie(& Turning Red) is people's(probably American) expectation of Disney & Pixar. They think the theme is too mature for children, that may be true, but I think it'll just fly over their heads.
If these movies were animes the responses will probably be a lot more positive.

I liked it fine, but I felt that the ending cheated. SPOILERS BELOW
By having the main character go back to life, it ultimately undermines the whole point of the movie. At least that's what I thought when I watched it.
