    I am not a huge fan of tumblers. I have one and it is hard to turn when things start to breakdown. I like the black compost bin that you own. Just my opinion. 🙂

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I agree with you on the Tumbler.The problem coming is there is not much ventilation on this Tumbler.
      I may have to drill some holes in the side to allow more ventilation. Thanks again for watching and commenting!

      Just put less in the tumbler and buy another tumbler or two when you have too much compost for one tumbler to handle.

    I am putting the same type of tumbler together today for my very first compost bin. Do you have any videos that you suggest I watch? If you do should I watch them in any particular order. I watched several other videos that came up first but I subscribed to yours. Your videos look well made, informative, and you speak plainly. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. My wife and I look forward to a beautiful vegetable garden. Do you use it on your lawn? Do you have a video on how much compost to use and how often to apply it?

      Awesome. It is a great product! Fill it up with greens and browns! I put kitchen scraps in tumbler. I also load it up with shredded paper. Paper and cardboard are a great brown to use with greens. Just keep filling it up and turning it . The compost is great for the garden. I use it as a mulch for plants and bushes. I use it on my lawn to fill in spots.

      I wish you and your wife the best!

    Is there a wide opening to take the compost out? Or do you have to pull it out of the little doors?

    • @thestupidgardener4642
      @thestupidgardener4642  Год назад

      I have to shake it out of the openings on to a tarp.. there are other styles of tumblers that have wider openings.. it is a little more work compared to a compost pile but things break down faster in the tumbler.. thanks for watching and commenting!!!!

    You mentioned manure, what kind is best? A friend has sheep manure that I can have. Is that alright to use? Also, do you have to set it aside for a few months to let it dry? I heard it will burn your plants if you put it on too soon.
    Thanks again, in really learning a lot from you!

      Manure would be great! You are correct.. do not put in directly on your plants.. mix it in with your compost and let it break down in your compost for at least 9 months maybe more.. definitely let it dry.. thanks for watching and commenting!!

    So how does the composting thermometer work to tell me what to change about my compost? What temperatures do I need to reach for compost to happen? Do I need to add compost starter mix?

    • @thestupidgardener4642
      @thestupidgardener4642  3 года назад

      If you ca get the compost up over 150 and keep turning it so it breaks down faster!
      Just start the compost with greens and browns and keep putting kitchen scraps in the compost.. I use a bunch of shredded paper also when I can’t get browns.

    What's the purpose of divider?

    • @thestupidgardener4642
      @thestupidgardener4642  3 года назад +1

      I believe the divider is so you can start composting on one side and then move it to the other side to complete it. I just load up both sides and keep turning it. Thanks for watching and commenting! Have a great day!

      If you have lots to compost and a big yard, then definitely no need for the divider when you have room for multiple composters. The divider is for tiny gardens like you see for townhomes & duplexes and when you have two small batches of compost started and aged a couple weeks apart. So, when you upscale, then you have at least two composters with no dividers in either to do different batches started a couple weeks apart.

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I will probably remove it this summer.. I just want to see how it works. The one thing I am worried about is air flow.. may have to drill some holes in the side..

    • @MaximGhost
      @MaximGhost 3 года назад +4

      @@thestupidgardener4642 You can always leave your two sliding doors cracked open a little for more aeration. If you've already tried that and your compost has a powerful rotten smell and if there's fly larva and bugs thriving in your compost, then the issue isn't air ... otherwise, the fly larva ang bugs wouldn't thrive. Instead, what you likely have is too much nitrogen-based matter from your kitchen scraps and fresh grass clippings and not enough carbon-based matter. In which case, just add more dry leaves, woody plant trimmings, straw, pine needles, sawdust, or shredded paper ... basically, anything that is dry and burns easy is likely heavy in carbon. Conversely, if you feel you have too much carbon-based matter, then add more hydrogen-based matter ... if you've ran out of kitchen scraps and fresh grass clippings, then you can buy chicken and steer manure at Lowes or Home Depot for between $2 to $5 per 1-cu foot bag. The other thing to make sure of is that the internal core of your compost is between 100 and 130 degree Fahrenheit ... they have long-stemmed "compost thermometers" on Amazon for less than $20 to help you out with that. Finally, water mass should be about 40% to 60% of the compost ... not enough water and the compost won't break down at the desired rate ... too much water and the air won't be able to circulate. So ... nitrogen, carbon, air, water, and temp ... those five are pretty much the most important things to experimentally balance yourself to get your compost to where you want it after 3 to 5 weeks. If you have a divider, then that actually makes it easier to experiment with since you have two separate compost batches to test different balances with. Good luck!

    I hope you are very careful about adding worms! A black plastic container can get really hot and kill the worms since they have no way to escape the heat. Not unlike leaving a pet dog in your hot car!

    • @thestupidgardener4642
      @thestupidgardener4642  2 года назад

      I don’t put worms in there. You are right they will not survive the heat. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @hssmama
    @hssmama 3 года назад +2

    Won't the worms cook when the compost is "cooking" on this type of composter?

    • @thestupidgardener4642
      @thestupidgardener4642  3 года назад

      The worms usually move throughout the Compost. I will probably drill some holes in the sides for ventilation. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @MaximGhost
      @MaximGhost 3 года назад +2

      Earthworms can't make their way into the tumbler since it's raised a couple of feet off the ground. The only "worms" you'll see are fly larva that are flown in by the mommy flies. The biggest factors for tumbler style composters are moisture and heat. That's why it's black. If you can get it to 120+ Fahrenheit inside during hot summers, then you can pretty much bake chicken bones as part of the kitchen scratch that you throw into it until it's soft and brittle. After a couple of months of that, throw the stuff underneath some topsoil in your garden and the earthworms will finish the rest of it.
