Like others here, one of my favorite Xmas songs. Cute story, great music and the earnest(if not traditionally musical) voice of Patty Donahue. Just perfect.
It’s amazing how often the “throwaway” song that the artist considers filler or junk is the one that resonates with people. Maybe because the performers are not trying too hard, not trying to make this their #1 song? Whatever the case, this song never fails to make me smile, and I can’t ever play it just once.

For those people who backed away from him in line while he was enjoying it, I have compassion for them. They obviously have no inner child, no Christmas spirit.

I kind of expected that this was a song they never expected to be popular - but it turned out to be probably their most remembered song ever - I think we all look forward to it every year. I remember when it came out in 81 - I was in college & the Waitresses led by patty Donahue were a sort of countercultural almost punkish kind of band out of Akron OH with a bit of attitude based on Patty's personality. To me this is where their sound really comes together - the vocals, the base line, and the story kind of always appealed to me even though it is written from the female point of view of this girl trying all year to meet this guy & then it comes together at the very end - such a sweet & innocent story with a happy ending. Great post - thanks NME
