Thank you Alister. I must say that what I have learned primarily over the last 3 years (from watching your videos) is the importance of just getting out there whatever the time of day or conditions. Photograph what inspires you and capture that moment for YOU not anyone else. A lot of thanks must go your way…
Happy feedback! There’s enough negativity in the world already. Plus I love the concept that the image did not exist until the choice to make it. It isn’t the same as those around you even if it is identical. Why? Because that one is your, be happy you have it and can relive the moment as often as you want.
Allister, being 67, I can relate to your “rambling” 😉. With this talent you have for verbalizing, you have put words on various feeling and unexpressed thoughts of mine, thank you for this. And using the perspective of counseling a younger self is a great way to organize a review of one’s own work. Thanks again and keep up the excellent work!
Haha, the older I get the more confidence I have in my rambles!! I’m really happy the video has been of some value, and I appreciate the great feedback
I would tell my younger self that you are the only.one that has to like what you shoot. In 50 years of shooting some people like what i do and some just done understand the more abstract stuff but thats ok .It's my zen time to get out of the things in your head. So to my younger self just be true to yourself
These days I photograph for myself, if people like what I do, great. If they don't, then they can go and look at someone else's work. Sadly too many people just want to talk about cameras and lenses rather than the art content. I have had many fine meals out in my time and not once have I asked the Chef what cooker he used!
Excellent video and as you said at the end…food for thought. I was brought up to never take risks. At least now, I recognize that. Getting better, but not a risk taker. I am enjoying photography now, probably more so than I ever day…just being out in nature is itself enough. It is a whole other world in nature that not everyone is even aware exists.
I latched on to Adam Gibbs early in my photographic career and he led me to you so I think that despite your different outlooks and styles my younger self was in good hands, as is my older self.
Hallo Alister, you are looking and sounding well again, glad to see that! You are talking like a happy man. Totally agree with what you‘re telling, as almost every time. Thank you ever so much for this video, please stay healthy.
Hey Alister, loved the words! Great inspiration and reminder to stay connected with the process of photography and to not to only think about the end results!
Thank you for this. Like many others, photography for me is a chance to get out into nature, enjoy the solitude and capture some memories. However, also like others, I not only have other hobbies (cycling, tennis, golf) but have many other demands on my time (work, three dogs, family, etc). I always enjoy my time out with my camera, but sometimes carry a little guilt about the many other things I could or should be doing. Being in the moment is an important message. BW
Ah, my younger self. Like many others, I would tell myself to shoot what interests / moves me and to not worry what others think. In particular, while critiques might be valuable, competitions should be avoided! On a different topic , do you have a code for Kase filters that will work for vendors in the USA?
I'm smiling listening to this. For quite some time you have taken the place of my "older self" talking some sense into me. Not my younger me, I'm afraid, though but the me I am now. And I will be forever grateful. I can't go back in time to talk to my 20 year old self, who would have dearly been in need of some good advice, but you taught me so many things - not just about photography and art but about embracing life, about authenticity and about joy and if I can manage to pass on a bit of that to somebody who needs it (including the more insecure parts of myself), my life is full and rich.
What would I tell my former self? Just take pictures!! Don't worry so much about them being bad. Of course they're crap, it's all a part of learning. I am definitely one of those people who is very self critical and I know I will never think I'm a good photographer no matter how good I get. That's just who I am. The way I know I'm getting better is when it gets more and more difficult to find reasons to trash my own photography. And honestly, when I find it easier to find fault with the work of other photographers. There is also the factor of watching RUclips videos from the experts like yourself. I know it's pointless to set the bar that high from the start but it's difficult not to. It's not easy to separate inspiration from the urge to compare. All in all, none of that ultimately puts a dent in my desire to get out there and take photos. I love it too much.
Yes, thanks so much, Alister, for reminding me about the reasons I make pictures and how that whole process feeds my soul. So important to be conscious of and feel the benefits of making images for me. So glad you are there regularly to remind me about why we do this fun thing called photography, when, in fact, it is so much more 👍
Hello Alister, enjoyed your talk.i always tell keen photographers, photography is an open book.I have changed my look at different aspects of photography and still enjoying it.Regards James.
Alister you are such a great teacher for me, 100 years ago hearing words from another photographer like you was not possible so I’m so grateful to be able to hear you advices that are really precious. Ps i m currently reading “expressive landscape photography” ( I bought all your ebooks) and is so helpful for me because it made me reflect more on my photos amd life. Thanks you so much 🙏🫂
I think the whole point of philosophy, or mindfulness for that matter is to notice and to learn. Growth comes from changing behaviours, not repetition. As primarily a photography educator, it is my job to provoke thought, insight and growth. It’s a metaphor ❤️ thanks for watching and taking time to make a positive comment, I appreciate it
What are your other interests ? I am curious to know because I see guitars hung up on the wall and have seen even piano in another video. As a creative i believe we would have interest in multiple creative genres. I am interested in multiple things and i struggle to even pick one because many things piques my interest. Every creative would be going through the same struggle. I am currently playing with photography.

Thanks, as always. Your name popping up always brings me great joy ❤️
The photograph didn’t exist until a camera was pointed and an image made. Love it! Thanks for what you do.
Awesome, thanks very much for the happy feedback

Nice bird shots! Haven't seen any of late? That first night shot was a beauty.
Thanks, they’re all old, I’ve taken the odd Gannet of Puffin, but stopped the long lens stuff back in 2010.

Brilliant advice and one to live by today - thanks for the great comment

Yes, very much so. Doing and feeling great ❤️. Thanks so much for the kind words..
Wonderful insight as usual - a very good reminder that we’re fortunate enough to have joy in our life.
Hey Alister, loved the words! Great inspiration and reminder to stay connected with the process of photography and to not to only think about the end results!
Thank You for sharing! Some days I have to force myself to get out/about! Once I made it outside, everything falls into place!

Come for the tips on photography. Stay for the free therapy session. 👏🏾🙏🏾
Haha, that’s pretty much my brand summed up 😂 our art and creativity is directly related to us and our personal growth.

Cheers fella, I appreciate that a lot. Was great to meet you.
Excellent, very contemplative... Thoroughly enjoyed it, and thanks for providing more food for thought...
Cheers buddy ❤️
Love it ❤
Many thanks
Definitely I’d say focus on the journey not some perfect end result

Thank you so much for the lovely words and supportive comment. It means a lot for me to hear them.
❤ ✌️Why ask your past or future self a question.? ✌️❤️ but Thank you for spending the time to create and share

I would tell my starter self, to place the emphasis on the image and not the tools.
What are your other interests ? I am curious to know because I see guitars hung up on the wall and have seen even piano in another video.

Music, writing, cycling, running, being a great husband ❤️
Great video though I would have a look at your audio which is a bit boomy.
Wow thankyou " don't take your life seriously "
What would I tell my younger self when I first picked up a camera to photograph a beautiful place? Buy post cards instead.
Haha, not bad advice either 😂
😂haha
