About Agatha Christie... race actually played a way bigger role in the original story which was later edited out along with the changing of the title. I don't remember all the details but Is This Just Fantasy? made a great video about it called "Crime and colonialism: Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None" if you're interested :)

I'm not a fan of this argument when it's used to discourage pointing these things out. Besides, there were folks who didn't have to be told racism is bad and managed to figure it out way before Agatha Christie started writing. What about Harriet Beecher Stowe for example? Her work came out when slavery was still a thing. Sorry but British authors have a pattern of being, let's say, insensitive, which makes sense since they were one of the colonizing countries lol And this is partly why saying "nah it's fine because race sensitivity wasn't a thing back then" is kind of missing the point
@@myweakness1883I feel like their comment wasn’t an argument to discourage anyone from pointing out anything. Nor was it saying that anything is fine about wrongful views. Hi! History teacher here and wanted to share my two cents on the issue. I can understand both points of view. When judging a person's morality, I think we should take the historical context into account (to some degree), because a person's morality is shaped by their culture and the way they were raised. I also think that when talking about the past, instead of judging an individual person's morals, we should focus more on the social structures and culture in general. We should read about the history of racism, for example, to be able to understand how it came to be and thus, how to stand up against it better. I think this is more productive than focusing on condemning individuals. That being said, I think there is no harm in pointing out the problematic parts about Christie's work.
