For me it's just the eyes. If the eyes were bigger this design would be fine. Technically we can't even see the full design because his entire lower body is obscured by his arms and the kart, so I think we should at least wait until we can see the whole thing before we go campaigning for a redesign.
I mean, It's entirely possible that's what they are going for with the new model but it's kinda convenient that they go bad to an older design that so happens to look like the design of the movie after the success of it
