I spent a bunch of money on some Jack Nicholas golf clubs years ago and was quite pissed that even with those clubs, I still couldn't break 100. Ya gotta learn to play.
Exactly. Learning to play is way more important than all of this stuff that comes done not only to personal preference but budget. Money does count in this world, and it affects most of our desicisions in one way or another whether we like it or not.
If you're in your 20s and depressed at Christmas time, don't isolate and drown your sorrows. And don't convince yourself that you're "too young" to have kids. Find a good woman, marry her, commit not to divorce her, and start a family. If you can't find a good woman, then surround yourself with friends during the holidays, especially if you happen to be prone to depression. Isolation and Christmas movies will not help you.

@@501chorusecho that’s extremely obvious! One of the premier players in the world. I wish you would give yourself a little more credit in the lead guitar department. I could listen to play guitar solos all day and night long always incredibly exciting and tasteful.

As someone who uses a Quad Cortex for nearly everything, I will say that most of us common folk are not falling for the BS that our modelers are 'just as good' as the real deal gear. Obviously vintage amps/guitars are a whole different experience. But most of us also can't afford any of the real stuff, so the modelers/plugins/whatever just get you in the ball park for certain situations. I play with in-ears in all of the gigs I've had in the last 5-7 years and haven't used a real tube amp in that long outside of my house. Obviously without in-ears, tube amps are still the best tool for the job. But once you isolate it offstage or in another room and have to play with in-ears it's a whole different game. Again, just the experience of your local average joe. Love these types of videos!
the weight difference alone is what has me rethinking things sometimes...Running real amps is always gonna feel and sound best. But the idea of a Guitar in a gigbag and a small backpack, and cabbing it home at the end of the night vs. driving, finding parking, unloading, reloading, then driving back home tired and unloading gear back into the house... is becoming more and more attractive haha
Thank you for also hitting the right notes on the gear topic, Larry. I'm 50 now and I came to the conclusion that my gear is actually exceeding my abilities for a few years now. The older I get the more I put focus and effort into my playing instead of lustering about the next nice thing. And it's been nothing but rewarding. If gear starts to matter again, it will be for the right reasons. Like you said, it's about self honesty. I love and respect that you get to the bottom of things and I suspect that's also the condition that makes you this bad ass guitar player and authentic person you are. Right on Larry.
I am the same age as you and when I was younger, I had tube amps and solid-state amps through my life, and I always liked the tube amps more tone wise but until I started building/designing tube guitar amps I didn't realize just how much. The difference is a deep wide gulf to me. I get that Joe Blow the guy who has been playing guitar for 4 years and everyday people can't tell but there is a feeling you get when you have a basic good quality vintage tube amp and you have it cranked to it's sweet spot. No better feeling in the world!

Uncle Larry, I have an original 65 vibrolux reverb that my friend sold to me in the 1980s when we were kids. It was his dad’s and pops never played it. I didn’t know anything but that it looked cool. He later laughed at how he ripped me off for 70 bucks - that was until a few months after when we walked thru Manny’s in NYC and saw it on sale for like $3000. Today, thanks to the minor adjustments made by Pete’s Amp Repair in the East Village, this thing sounds fantastic and it looks new (with some patina). I know the deluxe reverbs are coveted, but I believe this one’s on that level. Thanks Mr Henderson.
Just watched "Hands On The Wheel" from Willie's birthday party, what a beautiful song and so very well done by all. And you sir clean up well. Peace to you and yours brother.
Had a good Christmas party at my drummers house..... played and sang Christmas carols with cowboy chords. Threw in Santana stuff just to mix it up. Laughed all night... happy holidays to you all.
I love all the vintage guitar's, plus you put them through the paces like they should be, and we finally get to hear what these relics can really do, valuable when looking for guitars our self, thanks as always for another great episode.
Saw your Willie performance 2 days ago, it doesn't get a heck of lot bigger than that; enjoyed how pro you all were; keep giving it heaps Tom. Cheers, Ross

Lake County is calling…we want you up here soon….grab some big-‘ol steaks from Rudy’s….. Your playing never ceases to amaze! Merry Christmas! Happy New Year
Hey Tom, as far as newer digital amps, I had a VOX 212 digital amp, the size of an ac30 . I had no illusions about the actual sounds it claimed I had within that one amp. For anyone wondering, I did however love the tone I was able to dial in , and I never used any other settings. It was a great amp, but it wasn't a 69 plexi or a 50's tweed. A couple of the effects were cool, it had a pretty good delay which I did use. Anyway that's my experience with any kind of modern day digital amp.✌👍🎸
Spot on Tom, we only have enough time in this life to become really good at a couple things. I myself am a jack of all trades and master of none. There's definitely trade offs. I'm always amazed when people actually focus and hone their everything into something. That's when we all witness greatness. Just my thinking in the moment. Cheers everyone!!! Great episode as always Tom
Man my dad and I watched Miracle on 34th street every year growing up and I still watch it every year the original black and white version. I have seen the other version but still prefer the original... the videos are all great as a guy who plays for fun and used to be a live sound and studio engineer I enjoy all the playing and things you put up.. got the in stereo "album" on my ipod and enjoy the playing you guys are monsters.. thanks for sharing these...
Such a fan of Benmont. I’ve been fortunate to watch him play with Sarah and Sean Watkins at their “Family Hour” show at the Largo in LA for the last 15 years. Incredible touch and range. His solo towards the end of Petty’s “It’s Good To Be King” off Wildflowers takes me on a journey every time. Hope y’all get more chances to play together.
I’m a 73 year old beginner with a Gretsch single cut Electromatic and a Fender Champion 40 that I run some nice pedals through. To me, and for me, this little rig gives me sounds that I really like hearing. It’s kind of a great comfort to know that to sound better, I just need to buckle down and play. No need to chase gear, just need to chase technique.
Brother Tom!!!! Nice Mike Campbell SG!!!! LOL,your fingers are faster than Lightning!!! I would love to see a showdown between you and EJ! Or better yet, would love to see you play at the Grove in California! You are one bad ass!!!!
We called it “poke” in high school. lol! But seriously…yesterday I played my old Squier Lead I (MiJ) thru a 1982 Peavey Studio Pro using a Zoom Fender DLX REV model….a $400 rig. I was happy.
Your take on equipment is perfect and reminds me of when I played in a novice hockey league. So many of the players would have the top gear, graphite sticks, best skates on the market, etc., and look great. And then I'd blow by them in my Tack 152s, all-wooden sticks, gear from the play-n-trade store. Aside from a few pedals the only guitar upgrade I've made is to get a Les Paul with humbuckers. I've got a cheesy little amp that let's me hear what I'm doing, and that's enough for now.
Great, you just ruined my whole holiday season! Now I have to be good enough to worry about all the equipment I asked for for Christmas or should we say ordered for Christmas!!! 😊
Someone once asked me, "How do I find a holy grail guitar?" I said, "Just three things matter: Get a good guitar. Play it. Revolutionize popular music."
Sweet Tom, let’s bring you, Jedd and Guthrie home to Cleveland for a show. I can set it up for you. There is so much exciting we could do for it. The classmates would love to see where it all began for you. Love ya bro. Randy from Willowick
Hey again everyone and Uncle Larry, I just wanted to say at my age, 59, I noticed after a gig or rehearsals my left hand especially seizes up bad. The first time it happened I was driving it scared the hell out of me. My fingers were locked in a bent position, I had to force them apart and message my hand till it finally eased up. Exercise your hands before playing guys big time, especially if your older like myself. Tom Ives thinking those stretches you do while playing those amazing chords probably help you in some way. Anyway, Happy Holidays everyone 👍✌🎸
Thanks for validating my fondness for my solid state Boss Nextone amp which sounds fine, doesn't weigh 60 lbs., takes pedals, and is all I need for what I do (which is having fun).
Watch the Beck Hansen video of him singing Hands on the Wheel…. both of you fellas were amazing… Beck turn to you a couple of times with a look of like… Dang Uncle Larry….!!! Just beautiful… gunna be one of my favorites..
Tom, unrelated from your post here but....I bought the Music City tele bridge and had it put on a Mexican Player I have. It's a TOTALLY different guitar now. WHAT A PRODUCT!!!!
Speaking of etching in a mix, I finally ordered a boss eq-7 for my present to my self 😂. It was between that or a no balls odr-1, but I already have a king of tone so I figured it would be more effective if I got the boss. Thanks Tom…
On the beginner guy wanting to learn Guitar. I’m of the belief that you need decent gear to succeed. I was luck that when my oldest Son started playing I already had great amps and guitars laying around. If I had to go out a purchase them today, not knowing anything. Yes I would fall for the sells crap. Just on the price alone. Hell a Champ is $900 ! By the way I gave him a Peavey T60 and a Marshall JMC 50 watt combo amp that I bought in the early 80’s and said go for it lol It worked Love your channel Uncle Larry and hope to shake all howdy some day
Larry I'm on my Squier Classic Vibes Tele Rn. I smile when I play it. Besides it being heavy as a small car, I'll never know the differences between it and a great guitar. I especially can't tell the tone differences! And I know its because I'm not good enough, or care enough. That's fine. The feel on this thing is fine enough for me and it stays in tune, enough. Love ya Unc. You're the man
I always appreciate when Uncle Larry suggests that others might try opening their hoods, have a look at what's underneath, and be real with themselves -- that he is also willing to open his.
This episode's gear sermon took me back to the 80's when I was just learning electric guitar . Budget gear was pretty bad back then . Now great instruments and great solid state amps can be had for very affordable prices . These are great times for student musicians .
@@stringlocker I was just a broke kid in the 80s . I would have loved to have a Japanese Strat back then . Tbh I never even heard of Japanese guitars until decades later . My first good guitar was a G&L Legacy Strat in the early 90s . Great guitar still have it .
Ever try any old Trayors Uncle Larry? Here in N.B. Canada, they pop up from time to time. Got two from the original owners within the last couple years.
I use both modelers and real guitar amps, valve and solid state. I like them both. I do not have any illusions that the modelers are the same as the amps, but they are damn good. What they don’t have is the “feel” of an amp, and that “feel” makes me play a bit differently. All hail the heavy transformer! (Lifer, playing for about 38 years.)
Damn the pool cue analogy! The quarter tables in the dives I played at in Indy. The only pride in my playing was that I always used a bar stick right off the wall...15-16 ounce...decent tip and it had to have the rubber on the butt...I bounced the cue while waiting my turn. That was my only requirement and sometimes I didn't get all of that lol. I beat many a player who walked in with some cue that was their baby...and I lost as often. But playing & winning with those shitty sticks was a lot of my fun playing the game.
I spent a bunch of money on some Jack Nicholas golf clubs years ago and was quite pissed that even with those clubs, I still couldn't break 100. Ya gotta learn to play.

Had a good Christmas party at my drummers house..... played and sang Christmas carols with cowboy chords. Threw in Santana stuff just to mix it up. Laughed all night... happy holidays to you all.
I love all the vintage guitar's, plus you put them through the paces like they should be,
and we finally get to hear what these relics can really do, valuable when looking for guitars our self, thanks as always for another great episode.
Merry Christmas Uncle Larry, may you and your boys enjoy a safe and fun-filled Christmas 🎉
Saw your Willie performance 2 days ago, it doesn't get a heck of lot bigger than that; enjoyed how pro you all were; keep giving it heaps Tom.
Cheers, Ross
Digging the music villa shirt brotha! Shout out to my hometown!
BTW, Tom, that Avon Care Silicon Glove stuff works great. I like that it dries fast when applying it.
Good shit
I hope everyone reads your video descriptions. So good!
I know, right? Endlessly creative. Don’t know how he comes up with them. Anyone that clever with words is capable of, more than capable of, songwriting.
Uncle Larry. My man. Your videos make my day. Have a wonderful holiday season.
Music Villa T-Shirt!!!!!! Sorry I missed you in Montana!
I wish I had access to this advice when I was a kid... Its late for me... but for the kids... take this stuff to heart. Thanks Tom! 😎👍
Wow. Thanks for posting!
We don’t know what we don’t know… You’re the best Tom! Happy holidays!
Uncle Larry and Jd Simo playing together would be a dream come true
Just going to bed while on a trip to Japan, but finally managed to catch a Home Skoolin’ video early!
Hello from Djibouti, Tom! Thanks for keeping us soldiers entertained!
soldier on my good man
@@501chorusecho Appropriate pants this morn. And super tasty music with the morning cup of Joe!
You know what we're all googling now
Thank you for your service

Where the hell is Djibouti?????😂
Good morning Tom and happy Monday man! Thanks for the happiness you provide to your students 😃 we really appreciate you
We called it “poke” in high school. lol! But seriously…yesterday I played my old Squier Lead I (MiJ) thru a 1982 Peavey Studio Pro using a Zoom Fender DLX REV model….a $400 rig. I was happy.
Lovin thos saucey double stops!😊
Your take on equipment is perfect and reminds me of when I played in a novice hockey league. So many of the players would have the top gear, graphite sticks, best skates on the market, etc., and look great. And then I'd blow by them in my Tack 152s, all-wooden sticks, gear from the play-n-trade store. Aside from a few pedals the only guitar upgrade I've made is to get a Les Paul with humbuckers. I've got a cheesy little amp that let's me hear what I'm doing, and that's enough for now.
Best advise given Larry.... You could not be more right.
Great, you just ruined my whole holiday season! Now I have to be good enough to worry about all the equipment I asked for for Christmas or should we say ordered for Christmas!!! 😊
The live at Leeds SG....man I love it, and the way you drive it.
Someone once asked me, "How do I find a holy grail guitar?" I said,
"Just three things matter: Get a good guitar. Play it. Revolutionize popular music."
Hi Larry. I'll take my 1962 Falco grey tweed with one 8" Jensen...magical!
Anybody who doesn't love P90s should listen to this on endless replay...it's the greatest tone!
Love the rants Tom, That was great advice for young players.🎸
Watch the Beck Hansen video of him singing Hands on the Wheel…. both of you fellas were amazing… Beck turn to you a couple of times with a look of like…
Dang Uncle Larry….!!!
Thanks Tom…
That whole intro piece absolutely slayed. Dean Parks needs his socks back.
I think this Homeskoolin’ video description is my all time favourite! 😂
On the beginner guy wanting to learn Guitar.
I’m of the belief that you need decent gear to succeed.
I was luck that when my oldest
Son started playing I already had great amps and guitars laying around.
If I had to go out a purchase them today, not knowing anything.
Yes I would fall for the sells crap. Just on the price alone.
Hell a Champ is $900 !
By the way I gave him a Peavey T60 and a Marshall JMC 50 watt combo amp that I bought in the early 80’s and said go for it lol
It worked
Love your channel Uncle Larry and hope to shake all howdy some day
Sounds like that jam should be on a steely dan record. Love it! ❤
😂youre f*cked up Tom! Way too good. Your touch and phrasing is impeccable. Bravo
You're the man
Super fun chords! Nice.
Damn nice phrasing too... Excellent.
Always with the super cool chords!
I always appreciate when Uncle Larry suggests that others might try opening their hoods, have a look at what's underneath, and be real with themselves -- that he is also willing to open his.
Tom, your video description metaphors know no bounds.
This episode's gear sermon took me back to the 80's when I was just learning electric guitar . Budget gear was pretty bad back then . Now great instruments and great solid state amps can be had for very affordable prices . These are great times for student musicians .
probably had a peavey like me:)
@joebowbliss-rs5dl I wish I had a Peavey amp . I had a Gorilla 30 LOL.
Japanese guitars were excellent in the 80s the best deals since electric guitars began. Better than the knockoffs nowadays
Yeah, I’ve had them…I could never get anything out of them
I use both modelers and real guitar amps, valve and solid state.
