Actually instructions call for sweep from Temporal across forehead to opposite Temporal. That might account for slightly cooler forehead temps your getting vs ear.

Mine didn't work. Yes, I put in batteries and even changed them. Sent back and second one didn't work.

Change from Fahrenheit to centigrade micro switch between the batteries...It's still a piece of junk
