  • We built our mini earthship in 2001 in England. Its not really big enough to be called a real earthship and its not finished off properly, but its still a wonderful building. We call it our Earth-dinghy or Earth-tub ! It is loosely based on the earthship concept of Mike Reynolds.. the garbage warrior !
    It stays surprisingly warm inside even in winter and never dips below freezing inside even when its below zero outside.. amazing considering there is only a polythene front. It is made from recycled materials, scrap car tyres and sycamore trees. The kids love it and call it the hobbit house.
    Earthships are fairly easy to build by people with no building skills and considering the amount of scrap tyres there are in the world, earthships could be an answer to the huge global housing problems.
    We also made the music that goes with this film.. A few people have asked about it so heres a link to where you can get it... The tune on this film is called 'Follow the sun' and is by Moksha. You can download our album for FREE for a limited period from bandcamp;
    moksha-brighton...
    it says name your price but you can put in £0. :-)

    ha! you should see my generation, load of ungrateful buggers (i'm 15) , well some of them given no one person is ever the same. i was massively inspired by Reynolds and that hut is absolutely beautiful! i intend to help the earthship project when i am old enough in anyway i can!

    Finally found a video on a Mini Earthship. Just bought a small piece of land out in the middle of nowhere and wanted to build one small structure to have a place to stay when I go out there. I think I might want to try something like this. According to the county there are no building codes in the area where I bought the land.

    AWESOME and inspiring. Our generation is so afraid of a little hard work and getting dirty... I have people my age (mid 30s) tell me that was stupid and they would WAY rather pay a carpenter to build their place out of wood... I think YOU are on the right track. A home that really takes care of YOU and not vice versa is the way forward. Peace, love, and light guys! Namaste.

    I imagine its cost first of all.
    The soil / chalk / earth you pack into the tyres has come from the hole you dig to build the earthship, so you have this material just sitting there for free. Its is hard work, but packing it in like that makes it much more dense than a setting solution you could pour in.

    I've been thinking about making an 'Earth-dinghy' as a proof of concept to hold an aquaponics system.
    P.S. Your little Hobbit at the end is very cute.

    This is happening because people have listened to their inner voice ... this tells me it's not too late. We are being given information on how to deal with a problem and rise above it.

    what a wonderful space you've created. tell me, did you get any trouble about not having planning permission? i'm considering the harshness of beaurocracy i'll face if i submit plans for a house in england!

  • @woadboy
    @woadboy  11 лет назад +1

    Hi Sterling.
    Its not just the US spreading BS.. the UK do their fair share, so I apologise in return for us!
    It is my understanding that tyres will break down (slowly) by UV light. So tyres that are uncovered (ie permanently exposed to sunlight) may break down into the soil. If they are coverd in soil, as they would be in an earthship or similar, and so not exposed to light, I believe the breakdown is so slow as to be almost be non-existant.

  • @woadboy
    @woadboy  12 лет назад +1

    @flamehairdisaster1 @flamehairdisaster1 yes.. you will face problems getting planning permission for an earthship in England :-( but the issues are not unsurpassable.. The best people to speak to about that would be the people who built the earthip in Stamner Park in Brighton. They built it using domestic building regulations if I recall correctly.. and got the required planning permission.. If you google 'earthship brighton low carbon trust' you should find them.

  • @woadboy
    @woadboy  11 лет назад +1

    This is not a big building.. its a hut really. About 4m x 3m internally. It was built by a main team of only 2-3 people, with 5-6 on helper days. It took about 2 months to build, but that wasnt working everyday.. probably 2-3 weeks of full time hard work for 2-3 people.

  • @woadboy
    @woadboy  11 лет назад +2

    :-) This structure cost next to nothing to build. The tyres can be got for free from any tyre mechanic.. the wood was reclaimed from rubbish skips etc.. The only cost was the waterproof membrane and the UV stable polythene on the front. It took about 3 weeks hard work for 3 people. Sadly we have no plans to build another one of these at the moment.

  • @woadboy
    @woadboy  11 лет назад +2

    Well its been like that for 12 years now with no sign of any collapse.. Its not soil though.. its chalk.. You should be able to see that in the video. This was built on chalk downland so the ledge you are talking about is solid chalk, which also has a very thin skim of render applied to it.. On other soils the ledge would probably need supporting.

    Hi Romon. You need to own the land on which you build. If you wanted to live in it and have it as a dwelling you would also need planning permission :-(
    Our building is effectively just a shed.

    does Mike Reynolds surround his tires in cement and earth to prevent toxic off-gassing? seems weird to leave them exposed. 1) They arent pretty, no amount of vegetation will do that 2) they could be toxic to breath as they biodegrade. Am I wrong is this assumption? Genuinely interested to hear what people know on this issue.

    • @durand4979
      @durand4979 8 лет назад +3

      +Joseph Brown
      They only off-gass when exposed to UV rays, which do not happen when the tires are covered in either dirt or adobe.

    • @woadboy
      @woadboy  8 лет назад +2

      +Adam Mattingly
      +Joseph Brown
      Thats correct, its the UV rays that degrade the tyres and release gas. Covering them in dirt or adobe stops this.
      We dont live in this little earthship, if we did we would certainly cover the tyres with adobe.

    Hello from the states... sorry bout all the U.S. B.S. around the world. i am about to begin my dwelling in the next few weeks. I am not quite sure what constitutes an "Earth Ship" but i like what i see. there are many tires here and i want to use them somehow for anytihng. my fear is that the tires will break down and release gasses or even oils , thereby poisoning my love ones and the land. What to you think? thank you for your time and your efforts. sterling running stream phillips

    Very awesome! What sorts of hoops did you have to jump through with the local building authorities? I live in Northern California and I'm finding it very hard to get a permit for our earthship. We are in the process of buying the land, we should be able to move onto the land in about 40 days. Can you give me any advice on getting started?

    I live in England too, is it possible just to build one of these wherever you want, or do you have to pay for the land for it? If so how much would an adequate amount of land cost to create one that could say cope with a few people in it. Cheers.

    This is awesome.Hey 2 questions for you folks.How long will that polyethylene tarp last in ground roughly do you think? Also how deep do you have to go for tires(foundation wise)I've got a pretty good supply in of tires in town wouldn't mind givin it a go ^_^

    • @woadboy
      @woadboy  10 лет назад

      Polythene, like all plastic is broken down by light (UV) fairly quickly but kept in the dark it lasts for years. The damp proof membrane we used is actually meant to be buried (and plastered over).Its been over 10 years and its still fine. The beauty of using tyres is that you dont really need foundations.. they are so wide that they kinda make their own foundation... We were building on chalk so didnt have a problem at all.. we just went down to the chalk and put them on that. I dont think you need to worry about going deep for the first layer of tyres.

    • @woadboy
      @woadboy  7 лет назад +1

      Well it was mainly built using reclaimed materials.. The wood and tyres were recycled, the only real expense was for the membrane for the roof and the polythene for the front, plus a few other bits and pieces.. so probably all in all only £200-£300. The real expense was the hours of work filling and compacting those tyres!

    • @elizabethbennet4791

      Some definitely exist in Colorado! And you could probably make one in Alaska. The founder adapts the plans based on the climate. So they would probably not have a cooling system like they do in other places in Alaska and they would probably have a larger greenhouse area.
