Richard and Vision ARE the standard. THE standard! This arrangement of the Spiritual 'Calvary' is a testament to God's love and our ancestors ability to put it to words and melody. The four part Chorale is one the most intricate, and beautiful voice leading examples that I have seen written on paper. Very Bach-esque. Richard's Howard University (School of Music at the time) training comes through quite clearly. It also sets Vision apart. Going from full out Hawkins to the 1971 Howard University Concert Choir under Warner Lawson and Evelyn White, tonally, is very hard to do. THIS is why you go to school for music. You don't have to stay in the classical realm but USE the training to set yourself apart.
The last lead was the original lead from when they sang this on the Textures album with the Smallwood Singers. Her voice has the perfect texture for this song.
Your ability to break down and simplify the complex harmonies and vocal style choices exemplified in this soul stirring Easter Anthem, speaks well of your own excellent vocal and musical theory skills, good Sir! Awesome analysis as usual!!!
I love this song and Jarons analysis. If I’m not mistaken, I think that’s Richard Smallwood on the wall behind Jaron, to the left of the RUclips award. It looks like the cover of “live in Atlanta “?
Sir…seeing this blessed me so, so much!!! Not only are you breaking down the musicality and various vocal techniques that are used in the songs that you review, but you are ultimately sharing the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ…through the vehicle of music, which was created by God Himself!! I commend you for this! Please keep up the excellent work! I pray that many more lives would continue to be reached by God’s love through watching your content!🙏🏾🙏🏾
I would LOVE to see you someday analyze Nothing Without Your Love by Richard Smallwood. Lorree K. Slye's vocals are insane. I understand it may not get as many views are more popular videos though. But she is an insane technical jazz vocalist and her showcase on that song is unmatched.
I shared "Nothing Without Your Love" with some high level orchestra composers in Nashville the other day, and their jaws hit the floor in amazement. They immediately wanted to hear more from Smallwood, so I played "The Procession of the Levites" and they couldn't take it. It hit them so hard they had to walk out of the room to breathe. When they came back they wanted to listen closer to the the orchestration and chordal structure of "The Procession of the Levites". They said they have never heard chord voicings like the brass was playing in "The Procession of the Levites". They instantly became Smallwood fans, and influenced by his music. To God be the glory!
First of all sir…the LEGEND! One of my musical heroes, Richard Smallwood! What more can be said about the maestro!? Job well done! Now…if you don’t call a text sir! SURELY!!! I was waiting for the praise break!! My GAWD!!!!
That whole live recording of that album/cd/video/service was amazing! You can’t help for going in when you hear it. Sir Richard Smallwood & Vision. They don’t come like this anymore. ❤️❤️❤️
Jaron, I am balling my eyes out right now. Yes God! Great review as always. They def take us on a journey through what happened. Almost like a story told through the ages via dramatic song. They definitely paint a picture for you as well as convey the tone of the atmosphere.
OMG!! I love me some Richard Smallwood! And I love me some you! So glad you did this one. Blessings on Blessings to you! Let the Lord use you! 💯❤️❤️❤️🎶🎶🎵🥰🙌🏾🙌🏾💝‼️
Man u bad! I have learned so much from you. May God grant you your heart's desire and bless your family. I love the way you broke down the other Calvary This one was awesome too 😊 Bless u . Bro
I absolutely love the original Calvary recorded by The Smallwood singers on the 1987 Textures album … but this rendition is gut wrenching …… great work Jaron!!!!!!
The third vocalist, Carolene is the original Smallwood singer on the studio recording! She and Darlene, the second vocalist are from the original Smallwood Singers!
My God, you are more than a music teacher. You are minister working within your gifts....and we are blessed and uplifted because of that. Thank you for analyzing this song, but even more thanks for allowing the spirit of God to use to minister in this moment. May you works ever succeed because you always put HIM first. Thank you.
I love Richard Smallwood and have sung his songs in an ensemble I was with. I love your commentary. I'm so glad I've found your channel. I so wish I could study with you but I no longer live in the US. This was a blessing!!! 🙏🏽
YOU KNOW YOU AIN'T HAVE NO BUSINESS PLAYING THIS SONG! UGH! GOT ME HOLLERING ALL THROUGH MY ROOM! I AM SO GLAD you stop and start cause HONEY!?!? 😫😩😫😭😭😭🏃🏾♀️🏃🏾♀️🏃🏾♀️🏃🏾♀️💨💨💨
Richard Smallwood anything will lay you OUT ! It’s like Richard would touch the piano and the Holy Spirit would just flood the room first key Richard touched🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾❤❤❤
I remember when we did The Blood concert at United Baptist Church and Pastor DeAna Wansley sung the lead on this❤. I could barely sing I was so messed up
You pick the best singers, groups.Go Head..Get Happy if you Want To!! Love you Jeron! And btw a whole Vocal Beast yourself...i want to hear You sing more!!!! AND you better PREACH BOY!!!
I’m so glad you covered this! I suggested it about a year ago but knew we were no where near Easter. Loved this breakdown on another Smallwood genius piece.
What an awesome ministry.. the music and your analysis. Between Richard Smallwood and Edwin & Walter Hawkins.. my favorites. I’m sure as I look through your presentations I will find the Hawkins music. I enjoyed, loved, and was blessed by this (and Psalms 8) I just watched. Keep doing what you’re doing. I’m going to be sharing. BTW, I hope you meet Richard Smallwood one day ( if you haven’t already) Peace and blessings to you and your family.
I've been BLESSED by Richard Smallwood's ministry for decades. The anointing on his music is deep and powerful. "Calvary" is an example of this power. Calvary, or "Golgotha" which means “Place of the SKULL” (Matt. 27:33) is where Jesus crushed the head (SKULL) of the serpent, just like God said Jesus would in Genesis 3:15. Jesus' suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension was our victory over death. That's why i LOVE when Richard Smallwood follows up "Calvary" with a SHOUT by saying, "But the story doesn't end there, because on the third day, HE GOT UP"!!!!! Then Charisse Nelson McIntosh asks the most important question, so we don't forget who was the One who paid the price for us..."What's His Name? "JESUS". Thank you Sister Legrair for this amazing education on the vocal techniques of Vision. There is a lot to unpack and explain in this masterpiece. May God bless you and your ministry for His Glory!!!
Jaron have you ever analyzed the performance of Tamela Mann singing, “Change Me” I would Love to here what you have to say about that performance. Thank you
All of them can sing! But I've always loved Maurette Clark tone. Can you do Richard Smallwood & Vision. Angels Watching Over Me? This was when Maurette Clark first began with Richard Smallwood & Vision. Thank you for all that you do here on your page. Another good one to do would be R & B singer Kehlani on her song A piece of Mind. She first began on America's Got Talent. But she lost.
I never noticed how bluesy all the leads are. Like they are blues women. How Richard Smallwood mixes classical chorale composition, gospel lyrics and message with bluesy voices (specifically in this song) is so amazing.
I already LOVE the song, the music and the singing......and I can already relate to the impact of the words, their meaning and the impact of it all overall. But then I came across this thorough and precise explanation of how the vocals brought out the intensity of the emotions exuding from each vocalist.........oh, my!!!😂🤗🥰.........I'm enjoying this song even more after discovering this video just because of how he brought everything into play and I can picture the emotion and setting of Calvary with Jesus on that Cross with that hammer. He did that for me, you, all of us. The song was already powerful but thanks again for detailing the entire arrangement. My 1st time watching this channel just now and I loved it. ❤
This blessed me. Thank you for the analysis but most importantly thanks you for your sincere worship and sharing of God’s Word. I’m grateful for the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ!❤
From since the beginning of a song got Jeron’s head shaking before they start singing buckle up we all getting happy
YESSSS!!! I was thinking the same thing!!! 😂 BUT if you already know the song you already KNOW!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Haha, Listen Just Thinking About Calvary Makes You Want To Buck & Praise Him 🙌🏾
Yessss!
Lol, right!! Jaron said, "I gonna be good" and I said, No, you're not. 😊
Let's go!
Richard Smallwood is a musical genius. His arrangements incorporates just about all genres in one song. Amazing
The immediate previous director of the Aeolians is a musical genius
Jaron: "I'm not gone get happy."
*video starts* Jaron: *shaking head vigorously clearly about to get happy*
I also LOVE how the choir goes from harmony to single voice, them back to harmony. This is genius composing
I’m a Richard Smallwood fan...all day long! The best praise and worship music..
Me toooooo❤
This man is one of the most iconic songwriters/composers in the gospel arena. I go in every time I hear a Richard Smallwood song.

@ Gianni Music…Let’s not forget Darin Atwater the orchestra conductor. He’s amazing as well! 💙
@@revmd621 No doubt!
Thank you, Thank you Because Richard Smallwood and Vision don't get the flowers he deserves
Grief infused with hopefulness and happiness, knowing the big picture, salvation for everyone! Thank you JESUS! 🙌🏽🏃🏾♀️🏃🏾♀️
The last lead was the original lead from when they sang this on the Textures album with the Smallwood Singers. Her voice has the perfect texture for this song.
I’m a diehard of Richard Smallwood and Vision. This analysis is amazing. Love what you are doing Jaron.
I didn't know this was going to be a sermonic selection, then the word was going to go forth! PREACH PREACHER!
You MUST do Kirk Franklin's "Don't Cry" for Easter! Richard Smallwood was on the piano for that song.
You feel this song before they even start singing! Whew
I remember the first time I heard this song when I was a kid… I knew that it was special .. and to this day..this song still sends me😩‼️😬
Your ability to break down and simplify the complex harmonies and vocal style choices exemplified in this soul stirring Easter Anthem, speaks well of your own excellent vocal and musical theory skills, good Sir! Awesome analysis as usual!!!
10 seconds in he’s shaking his head and I’m swaying side to side. Lordt!!! It’s the piano for me! 😭😭😭😭
I love this song and Jarons analysis.

I agree and she can sing first Soprano

This song sounds like an old black spiritual sang by slaves. I love it!😊

Everyone have a blessed Easter Sunday
Jaron, Don't apologize or explain for getting "happy"... we get it..we understand, we're right there with you! ❤
That whole live recording of that album/cd/video/service was amazing! You can’t help for going in when you hear it. Sir Richard Smallwood & Vision. They don’t come like this anymore. ❤️❤️❤️

The build up is just so inviting and you know it’s good when the song starts back up and doesn’t just end. These songs tell you a story. 🙌🏾🙌🏾💜
We will see if you can keep it together, however, I doubt it. This song takes me there EVERY time.
Jaron, I love when you end the video with a praise! Hallelujah!
Jaron, I am balling my eyes out right now. Yes God! Great review as always. They def take us on a journey through what happened. Almost like a story told through the ages via dramatic song. They definitely paint a picture for you as well as convey the tone of the atmosphere.

Also Jaron: "immediately gets happy"
Love Richard and all his gifts
It’s a good thing that you didn’t go to the praise break. We would have seen you shouting in this video. 😂

Surely he died on Calvary for you and me❤❤❤❤that’s love!❤❤❤❤
Never realized how blues-ey this song is.
This song is a beast! I'm happy to hear your analysis. So I'm guessing He Decided to Die is on the list for this series?
My God...awesome!
Now see…. you tried it! Lol! 🏃🏾♀️🏃🏾🏃🏾♂️
