The Most Scenic Hike In Belgium

  • On our road trip through Belgium, we headed south to spend some time in the Semois Valley. We hiked from the town of Rochehaut to Bouillon, around 15km of some of the most beautiful scenery you can imagine. Forests, rivers, small villages, wildlife, rolling hills, and best of all, we were almost the only hikers the entire day.

    that "little house" used to be a watermill, its ancient, it was already there when Godfried of Boullion was coming back from the crusades, my dad bought it when i was a teenager, years of renovation, he sold it 20 years ago, lots of memories from that place

      @@lylesuch4421 Yes, and it's interesting to hear that you had no idea that Belgium would be so great before actually setting foot in the country. It means that the Belgians are not self-conscious enough as a nation, they don't publicize their country enough on the international stage. May I ask what country you are from?

    • @lylesuch4421
      @lylesuch4421  3 года назад +2

      Agreed. We are taught the history of Belgium here in the U.S., so as a tourist we are there to experience the history. The beauty, nature, friendliness of the people and diversity of fun things to do aren't highly publicized. It is impressive that Belgium has never really promoted themselves as a tourist destination in the United States, they could really bring in a lot more tourist dollars if they did, although probably a good thing that they stay under the radar!

      @lylesuch4421  6 лет назад +1

      I’d love to help, it was also very challenging for us to figure out the hike so I hope I can make it easier for you. The hike is called the GR16. There are small red and white markings that you follow along the way, but there are so many ways you can go that it’s easy to go the wrong way if you’re not paying attention. Luckily, after all the research that we did, I stumbled across Alltrails.com and they had the exact route that takes you through the best parts of that area. If you sign up to Alltrails.com (I think it’s free), then search for GR16 Sentier de la Semois you will find the entire hike. Zoom in to Rochehaut (or Frahan) and follow all the way to Bouillon. Upload map to your phone and you should be set.
      A couple of tips:
      Make sure you stay near the river after the Tomb of the Giants and that will take you through the beautiful valley and abbey.
      It can be tricky if you plan on hiking one way. There is no transport service, we had to have our hotel in Bouillon call a cab to drive us back to our car which we left in Rochehaut. Not a big deal, but it does take some extra time.
      Don’t miss the lookout tower above Bouillon.
      Good luck, if you have any more questions let me know. I’m sure you will love this hike!

      49.800194, 5.065214
