- On a new episode of the Headlock Headlines, Marvin the Movie Monster is, as usual joined by Trip and Tooney Khan (our puppet versions of Triple H and Tony Khan) to discuss the latest and greatest pro wrestling news of the week. The gang discusses and openly mocks everything from Jey Uso and Yeet to Mercedes Mone winning a title in her first match, AEW's media rights woes, and Jack Perry being lit on fire while main eventing over World Champion Swerve Strickland.
All this plus Dave Meltzer thought Roman Reigns faked cancer on this week's episode of the Headlock Headlines.

2:45 I have to disagree on the Jey being a bad talker part, his promo game has definitely gone down the toilet since his "Yeet" gimmick started but his segments with Roman during Quarantine and leading up to him splitting off from the bloodline he was very solid, it sucks that hes devolved to being a catchphrase guy when hes shown actual character depth in the past
He's 100% got the potential, but that's why being seen as 'over' as himself when he's not is that much more dangerous.
That promo he cut last year talking about never living up to his older brother, using his real name 'Joshua', that was AMAZING. One of the best promos of the year for sure. But now he's fallen into the LA Knight trap of people only wanting him to finish his sentence so they can yell the thing, no one cares about what he has to actually SAY anymore.
I think Jey has what it takes to stay past Yeet, but it doesn't do him any help with legions of dummies refusing to acknowledge that his CURRENT popularity is thanks to a meme and not the man.
Unlike Daves ratings. This HH deserves 5 stars. Team Rocket and the Duck Tales mention just chefs kiss

This is becoming my favorite Wrestling channel, more accurate and honest than......well any other wrestling related channel this days.
Yeet is closer to the “what” chant. Annoying at best and the talent will regret it years later.
That bit about Punk and Moxley (about 15:22 ?) is why I feel like AEW is the final form of Control Your Narrative. The idea of all wrestlers determining their own creative is absurd since just about everyone thinks they ought to be a champion. If you believe that, you end up with a ridiculous promotion where seemingly everyone has their own belts (even if you need to borrow one from another company) and you get an extra tag title for 6 man matches... That's not to say that they should have no input, I'd imagine you could make life a lot easier as a booker if you encouraged people to pitch and went with one good idea from the talent and developed it properly with it unfolding over weeks and months, but wrestling has always need workers like the Brooklyn Brawler who helped shine up a talent and played a part in getting the audience to care for them.
*sigh* - where have all the jobbers gone?...
WBD should do the smart thing and give TNA a TV deal. TNA would take it for half
of what WBD is currently paying AEW.

I need a handicap match vs Smeltzer and Tooney for what they said about the cancer and the treatment. It might be a little 'late 90s attitude era main event' stiff.

I saw someone (can't remember who now) make the Usos Bucks comparison about 3 months ago and now I can't unsee it. Ruined the Usos forever for me.
The writing was great this week. The callbacks and the Jey Uso argument were really well done and added subtlety to the comedy. Watching this channel develop and hone it's voice is one of my favorite things right now, keep up the good work!

Double or Nothing was an embarrassment on so many levels. Not even the return of MJF rocking the HHH Jacket and bad Tattoo could save this show. You have Ospreay nearly getting decapitated just to win a mid-card title, which now seems pointless as he's now going after Swerve's title only 3 days after he won the one he has. Mercedes continues to prove she is not worth the money, as Willow carries the entire match. But the spoiled diva was going to throw a tantrum if she didn't win the title, and she too is now going after another belt. Swerve himself feels like an afterthought, we saw Takeshita lose to Mox Hogan, while Jericho pisses away his entire legacy. We saw Edge injure himself in a pointless spot he now regrets as the House of Black get beaten down by Gangrel. Finally, you have the Dumpster Fire in the Arena, which saw flamethrowers, thumbtacks, a fake car crash, and of course, Darby being hung-upside down and left there. Now yes he might have only been a few feet from the ground, but still, you do this ont he Anniversary of Owen Hart's death with Martha Hart there? Jesus fucking Christ. But hey Meltzer gave almost every match but the Jericho Match 4+ stars with Dumpster Fire in the Arena even beating out Cody/Logan Paul and Gunther/Orton, while Lyra/Nia got the lowest rating of the weekend with 1.75 stars.
Marthas own fault for getting involved with them. She knows what their all about. Owen didnt even like all that crap..owen was about technicality and ring pyschology. It does nothing for own at all having his memory have anything to do with some of that crap. Its just a money grab by her. If anything if she wants to do a owen cup or trophy..or champion his memmory it should be about saftey, making thing better for wrestlers, covering their medical care and after career care...about having safe good realistic matches that are legendary and go down in history ect....
Nia needs to do a bonzai drop on meltzer and see how he likes that for stars...and see if he then stops seeing stars for the rest of his life

Personally I think Jey is a decent wrestler as a mid carder besides as a tag team I don’t see him as a main eventer but that’s just me.

I'm kidding obviously, but I wonder if a good booker could actually do a lot of shows by acting more like an editor. Source ideas, set a few targets for when certain points would happen, and then delegate most of the week to week stuff to agents and the talent, maybe with a few staff writers for the wrestlers to use as a sounding board. There are some programs that in the right hands would run almost on auto pilot, you'd just need to make sure to rein in Jericho etc. At the very least it would have to be better than what he does right now!
I hope your next Headlock Headlines features Jordynne Grace invited to NXT and how the TNA Knockouts Champion's Theme Music is still more recognizable than most the WWE's Womens' Themes (Def Rebels = Deaf Rebels). Exposure, temporary trades, and TNA's biggest ticket sale (Slammiversary) outselling past TNA events over 10 Years is bringing back some hope after Anthem's stupid decision to fire Scott D'Amore.
I love the whole idea of NXT crossing over with TNA as it feels like it allows both companies to pick up wins. It doesn't bury TNA if occasionally an NXT talent scores a win, and since NXT is developmental, some of their rookies losing to veteran talents doesn't Bury NXT. They can be unpredictable, and they can co-operate to have the booking work for both companies. As compared to say not allowing a promotion to get their belt off your star in their big PPV event, or expecting the other promotion to book your diminutive and mediocre star as though she was Hulk Hogan...

Whilst unlikely I think a short stint in TNA could help Becky Lynch ref-find her drive and motivation. It's helped Naomi much more than Mercades Mone in better fan reception; her new theme also seems to pay tribute to her time in TNA. If anything it'd be nice to see Becky Lynch temporarily return as Steampunk Becky Lynch.
I wouldn't be surprised if Becky ends up taking a player coach role down in NXT when she re-signs. It might be a ob that works so much better than a full schedule for being with her family, and maybe she just doesn't feel the need to get the belts again, she seemed to enjoy her time going back tp NXT to help bring talent along, arguably more than any of her main roster things for a while

Some of the ratings increase at dynamite could be due to many of their fans not buying tickets ( probably cus its not worth it) and watching the shown in the arena....to watch the bits and peices they like at home on tv. The arena was near empty.

I’m going to disagree with the Jey commentary. I’d prefer Jey changed up his move set but I won’t pretend he isn’t a good performer. Most iconic wrestlers have repetitive movesets (HHH, Rock, Roman) that’s an industry issue not just a Jey problem. His promos tend to be overly urban but when he isn’t forcing a yeet in all his promos they are decent.

Enjoyed the episode and looking forward to the next song. That said, I do want to push back somewhat on Jey Uso. He does have a limited moveset and he shat the bed with his brother at mania and that's more than a fair criticism. However, his character got over because of his character work during the Bloodline saga. Were it not for the drama behind him accepting Sami, turning on Roman and involvement in many other minor storylines in or near the main event scene, many of those stories would not have been as well-received as they were.
Yeet definitely brought him to another level and I do agree with you that he's going to need to expand his repertoire in ring and on the mic as a standalone wrestler/performer to maintain that momentum.

Thank you for bringing up how things defy basic reality in some of AEW's matches, like with Junglebook getting his leg set on 🔥 and then using his legs on the finisher. I don't watch a lot of AEW, but what I do watch mystifies me. Like in the Edge vs Maliki Black match when they were using a baseball bat in the beginning of the match................ and then completely forgot about it!!! Why would you introduce something that could be used as a deadly weapon in real life, in the beginning of the match??? In reality, wouldn't someone just forget about everything else, pick up the bat, and mollywop the other person with it until they couldn't walk or produce a cognitive thought??? What reality are they in??? And WWE has done similar things in the past as well, so they aren't immune to ignoring reality either. It just seems like it happens more in AEW.
I'd love to see someone bury the whole no DQ thing by using a baseball bat to screw up their opponents legs in a last man standing match. If you could work it so they came out, seemed to mess up both the opponents knees so they couldn't stand and have a match over in barely 2 minutes, you'd get the crowd annoyed and could hopefully get them to realise that the stipulation should always have been 'no holds barred' instead of 'no DQ'. That would especially work in WWE where there are a few officially banned moves that could maybe be teased or even used by talent who know how to work them safely

I've enjoyed alot of Jey's matches and think he's done pretty good as a singles guy, and excluding his singles run in the Thunderdome (For obvious reasons)
He got some pretty good pops well before he picked up the YEET chant. I would not be surprised if he becomes IC or US Champion at some point

I'm honestly kind of amazed that TK would expect a good deal at this point. They've just had their worst year in their history. AEW lost CM Punk, the ratings have dropped consistently despite signing big money deals with talent and they're a cold product. There's no real optimism for the company at all at this point. A year ago they might have gotten a better deal, but this was the worst time for the deal to come up.
I'd be surprised if there wasn't a history of TK finding any kind of number that validated him and clinging to it, no matter how much context he had to omit. I remember the DAZN deal for Europe was meant to include the UK, but he didn't feel like the professional media company valued his company correctly compared to how he viewed the numbers. Less than two years later, AEW has been dropped from that platform for underperforming the very meagre deal (low 6 figures, I want to say $250k annually for the bulk of Europe)
Swerve hasn’t felt like the world champion since he got the belt. In Tony’s defense he’s attempted to get all his big money acquisitions over. His idea of getting them over hasn’t been great accept for maybe Will but he’s trying to get something out of that investment.
Yeah, Will is getting over despite Tooney Khan. Seems like TK believes if he puts a belt on someone, that person is automatically over.
@@Htown_drateR that’s how he responded to Chris getting go away heat too… took a symbolic title off a homegrown young talent and put it on Jericho. Same with Mone took the title off Willow one of the few true babyfaces that AEW has(also homegrown) and put it on someone proven not to draw.
In the case of Swerve, I don't think not being the main event kills a wrestler. I know that we would have loved to have the story of a man making peace with himself by defeating a man he has had history with over a storyline about a takeover where the only thing the guys who have taken over have done is clap when bad guys win. I also don't think the crowd would have been hot if Swerve vs. Christian went on last, because it's hard to have a match in front of a crowd who has just seen a man get set of fire, a man hogtied and hit with a thumbtacked shoe, and a man get hit with an exploding chair. For the sake of comparison, take SummerSlam 2010, even if the story had more weight at SummerSlam 2010, the show needed to be closed out by Team WWE vs. The Nexus, not Rey vs. Kane or Sheamus vs. Orton. Even back in 2022 with the first Anarchy in the arena, the spots weren't as heavy as they were in the past 2, and not just that but even in the dark era of 2022, AEW crowds were very much hot for everything throughout the ppv night. Only time will tell with Swerve, but right now I think it's definitely hyperbole to say he's been buried.
