  • Lois Gibbs speaks about the beginnings of Love Canal. In the mid-1970s, Lois moved into what looked like the perfect neighborhood near Buffalo, New York, with her husband and two small children. Several years later she discovered that her neighborhood had a dirty secret, which was making her son, Michael, sick and would dramatically change the rest of her life.

My mother passed away at 45 years old..
    I was 9.
Cancer.. she did a lot of work in the basement..
I remember the funny smell down there..
Brown stuff would come up in the basement..
We had a few basement floods.. It was like a oil film on top of the water..
    Glad we moved..

I lived on 99th street Love Canal as a 2 year old, and moved across the creek when the homes were demolished. Spent most of my life in that area. Really hits home. Lois Gibbs is a hero for many many families.

Lois - you are a true inspiration. I am the founder of a Citizens Group in Pompton Lakes, NJ called Citizens For A Clean Pompton Lakes (CCPL). We are living in a horrible toxic cocktail in the contaminated area known as the DuPont plume. I have been fighting for what is right for the residents in Pompton Lakes since the release of our vapor intrusion contamination to the public in June 2008. We also have soil and groundwater contamination and to-date if affects over 450 homes.

This is so horrible and "nightmarish" what happened to those people and the poor children especially. When I heard 22 women pregnant and only 4 born normally, I wept. Man and his need to kill "love". Miss Gibbs, you are a heroine and we admire your unforgettable fight for the truth! It sounded like a wondrous place to be at Love Canal, too.

I've never seen this woman speak before but knew somewhere 1 person took a stand and changed the world. She has been my hero for many years. Thank you for putting this online.

Thank you so much for putting this on. I have read lots about Love Canal, but to actually hear Lois Gibb talk...! Although there are a lot of other (worse!) Superfund sites, it is very inspiring to see/hear one of the first common public environmental activist. She's a real hero to keep it up after so much trouble.

Makes you think about how much or how little we know about what could be buried beneath our feet.
    Probably nothing, mayby not.

I'm doing an in depth paper and presentation at Oregon State University on Love Canal, from the very beginnings with William T. Love to the end, after the containment of the chemicals. I encourage you to love her for what she did and thank her for potentially saving your and your family's life.

The entrepeneur William Love had an idea before alternating current was developed that he would build a 'Model City' that would run on a generator that would send power out from the center of a futuristic city he got mone to start digging a canal from the upper Niagara River to the Lower Niagara and use it as a power generator around the time of the generator when alternating current was developed it fell through

@angrydoug, toxic people and organizations always seem able to silence anyone who exposes them for who they are.
This is why I suggest to look beyond approved and sanctioned images of people, public and private organizations by researching [keep in mind Intent, Context, Circumstance, and Consequences] how they attain wealth, power, authority, and supporters especially how they keep them that can reveal their personality and character.

That was the River Road oil refineries and Tonawanda coke plant and dunlop. Wild brew of smells converged in that area.

@lilaclang Hooker said it wasn't fit to be built on. They did and said everything they possibly could. In NO WAY can any RATIONAL human being blame them for what was obviously the Education Dept's obvious carelessness, blame, neglect and outright criminal act.
