What a considerate food bank you have there Carolina. Love that even the spoiled produce doesn't go to waste... including those🫑peppers too... I know how much you like your peppers, that would've been difficult! Benefits all around!! Wonderful rewards for your help too. Great video my friend❤
It's so nice for you to get out and be with other adults 💝 what a feeling of being able to give back & be apart of it 💝 that definitely makes u feel proud and belong💝
I got moldy grapes twice. Not just a couple in it. The whole bag was moldy. The grapes were dropped off on a pallet so nobody even looks at it before the volunteers are told to give it out. We did get tons and tons of green beans. I was happy to get fresh green beans. :)
I really like these videos. It's good to know that nothing is going to waste. I'm not sure what my food bank does but I know that they are finally building their own building for it. It's literally right down the street from me.
Hi..Hi..Hi Mama Baird 🥰! Oh my 😮😮😮😮! That was SO much FUN!!! Holy CAC-COW that's a BIG bag of Pie Crust Mix 😂! Ya better put your Apron on & git Bakin' 🤣🤣🤣. I wish I lived closer to you, I would assist you in preserving all that food ♥️💙💜❤️💙💜! TYFS.
From Oz. Wonderful to see the damaged produce go back into the food chain-out to the farms for the animals. For the pie crust make up and freeze individual sheets or share. Good information about the workings and organisation of your food bank. Does the food bank give any recipe suggestions the boxes? Great video and you have deserve the free food for your family. 🎉😊
That huge bag of pie crust😱. Make and freeze some dough but also stop that expire date by freezing the base! In addition to pies you could make pop tarts-quiches-chicken pot pie-empanadas-galette-pinwheels(like cinnamon rolls but use pie crust it’s like a cookie)cut dough into crackers with everything bagels seasoning is yum! Love that you showed your volunteer experience-not everyone knows what goes on at the pantry-you may have inspired more volunteers!!!
Jiffy brand sells a pie crust base, if it is similar to that, it is a 9 ounce box and you add 4-5 TBLS. cold water, makes 2 crusts. If this is the case your 42 lbs. of base will make about 150 pie crusts. You are going to be making everything into a pie LOL. Enjoy!
I volunteered for many years at a local hospital. I worked in the ER waiting room. I loved it. It gave me something to do and I made some good friends there. I miss doing it but I can't right now due to health issues.
Wow, this is amazing! Our food banks give out packages with mold. I’m impressed that yours actually sorts the stuff before giving it out. I’ve been debating if it’s worth the 6 hour drive for me to visit your food bank lol. I’m so jealous every time I watch your hauls 🤣 have a great day, & thanks for sharing 💕
I work at my local walmart it is our job to make sure we don't give (bad) stuff to our food bank we have an associate that has the job of culling any packages that have bad produce in them then taking them to the back where they are sorted through and the bad ones are put in a bin that goes into a big organic bin that is picked up by a company it doesn't go to the dump we also have one for meats that can't be sold or donated to local food banks. We strive to donate as much as possible, while haveing very strick policies on what can and can not be donated( well my store does anyways)
Our local food bank gives what you need if they have alot you can always get more and you cut the bad parts off. They use government money to buy from local stores but store's are running out of food so it's cut back to just a bag per car.
Girl, I just love your spirit. I would love to do that job. How FUN! I LOVE produce. Pantries I've been to in the past gave me the spoiled produce. I recently moved in with my dad from Ca to TX. I've been wanting to go to a food pantry, cause I'm broke. And we do not eat the same foods. I'm a bit too much of a vegie eater for him. Lol But I'm feeling weird about what he might think of me if I did. Sooo, I will most likely get over that soon. I know he would buy food for me, but I'd rather him not. Hope your having a beautiful day.
Can I have some prayers please, my car and house was broken into this morning kids and I fine nobody was hurt 5,000 was taken including my purse and wallets all my credit cards ID and social security card. They stole so many items from both of my kids, people are just horrible 😭😭😭
You have an amazing food bank ...the one I go to the produce is always bagged up in all rotten and what you can use its in terrible condition so just go thru it all and discard the bag
I'm sorry to hear that! We have a refrigerator truck as well as lots of coolers to keep the produce as fresh as possible. I know thus really helps extend the life of it. Not all food banks are able to have that, which really blows. No one should get moldy food when they are hungry! I'm sorry.
I was a volunteer paramedic for years. I worked full time in banking but went to school to get my paramedic so I could volunteer. I love helping people n that was my way of fulfilling that. Your food bank is great. I was thinking the same thing about the bell peppers that only had a spot on them lol. Thank you for sharing.
You can freeze dry varanasi but be sure to spritz with lemon juice and it does not take much so they do not turn brown or you could make banana pudding out of them and freeze dry into freeze dried banana pudding bites or take the banana pudding and top with coolwhip or other topping and in the pans and use something to divide into serving sizes for a quick dessert or snack.
It's great that you're volunteering at your local food bank. In our area in Virginia I have been to two different food banks. There were no choices,ya git whatcha got and ya don't throw a fit. Your food bank is amazing.
Carolina, just Google “how to use pie crust base mix”. It will tell you what to do. Happy you get out of the house, as well as the kids, and you are volunteering also. You got some great things for your household as well. Love your videos!
I have fond memories of volunteering. I was lucky enough to work in a ladies clothing consignment shop and a museum book store. Got to go downtown and take advantage of vintage clothes and wonderful books. Made some really good friends there too! ♥️ And it didn’t feel like work at all. 🙂
Very nice facilities! Absolutely huge. We are in a church basement and are cramped for space a lot of times. We just have a bunch of reach in fridges and it sure would be nice to have a large walkin .... Our waiting area for clients is an outside patio and this time of year it is hot out there, so we hand out cold bottled water till we can let people inside.
So, if you get ugly, over ripe bananas, do what i do. Peel the bannanas and put in small zip lock bags. One or two per bag. Put in freezer. When you want smooties, just toss the fozen bannanas in your blender with milk and other yummy stuff and blend. I always look for the marked down over ripes at our local store. Rarely ever buy "pretty" banannas. Also. For bannana bread/muffins, take out the frozen bananas and let them thaw, then put in your recipe. Works very well and makes delicious results. Never throw out ugly bananas! The more freckles and brownish, the sweeter they get.
I will bet you can turn some of that pie crust into biscuits… by using 3 cups pie mix add 1 1/2 cup reg flour, 2 tbsp baking powder, 2tbsp sugar,1/2 tsp salt( maybe) ,1 3/4 buttermilk or milk . I hope this works for you. Good luck on all the wonderful baking. If the biscuit works that’s a good base for pancakes too lol. I know I’m odd. 😂😂 ❤❤❤❤❤ your channel you are the bomb ❤
I would assume pie base is just flour and a fat (shorting). I would assume you could use it to make flour tortillas. Meat pies or things like that would be nice easy premade meals. I would have taken 3 bags. lol but I am a baker (what i rather do in kitchen not a professional) so making a meal or a pastry would be simple for me to do.
Great video Carolina, we will have to send the haters to see this video and they can see how much the stores would have thrown away. Glad you got a good haul as well.
As for the pie crust, you can make up the dough and wrap them individually in Saran wrap put them in freezer bag in freezer and bring them out as you need 😀
Love spending time with you and your food bank adventures We are blessed with a church that has a pantry outreach, but it is quite small. I am grateful the pantry staples that free up funds for produce.
That’s really cool that y’all sort thru the produce, I don’t think they have enough volunteers to be able to do that here, so if we get a bag of something chances are at least one rotten item in it has caused the rest to be pretty iffy by the time we get it home. Ours is really lacking on good produce most of the time unfortunately, at least on the days and times I’ve gone so far, but next week I’m going on a different day than the first few times I’ve gone, so we’ll see how different it’ll be. I’ve got my fingers crossed! 💜
That’s great that the food bank creates a “circle of life” from the store, to people who need it, to feed farm animals, to create more food, to feed people! Fantastic! I was curious if they are able to recycle any of the boxes/bags/plastic that the sorted items come in? For the pie crust base…I’ve never used that (Mom taught me how to make scratch) but I’d look at the ingredients to see if it has any fats in it already. Costco’s pie crust is really good, so it should turn out well! One thing I do know about pie crust is that it freezes well. Pull out the Kitchen Aid, figure out the proportions (remember to always use ICE COLD water, like put ice cubes in it to make it extra cold…helps keep it flaky. And, never over beat that dough…tough pie crust, yuck.) Anyway, you could make a large batch, roll out into sizes to fit your pie/casserole dishes, put on sheets of parchment paper, stack, put in a tight ziplock, or vacuum sealer if you have one, and you have pie crust on hand any time. Might also check to see if it has sugar as part of it’s ingredients already. If it has sugar, it’s for sweet dishes, if not, you can add sugar to some batches to have crust for sweets and other batches for savory (chicken pot pie….mmmmmmm.) A food processor works really well for making pie crust also, or a hand pastry cutter, or just two dinner knives cutting the fat into the flour until pea sized. (I’ve found the best fat mixture to be part butter/part Crisco…gives you the best of both worlds, imo.) Pasties are a great recipe to use for easy to freeze/heat lunches or dinners for on the go, and can basically be a “kitchen sink” of left over meat, potatoes, veg, whatever. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!!
Thanks for all that help Molly!! I'm super excited as well! That is a good idea to check if it has sugar. I know it has a fat in it, but didn't check for sugar!
My food bank would give out mostly mouldy produce. And because it was “given” to you it felt like a waste. They did however, have a front room and I ,because I lived close, utilized that resource at least two times a week. They’d sometimes have fresher produce especially in the fall from the fields and always bread items. I’d check there first before I’d buy from the store.
Caroline, you can cook down and strain the grapes into juice and leave it in the refrigerator for several weeks for jelly juice... My son in particular loves grape apple which he calls grapple jelly
Amazing haul. Have you ever thought about dumpster diving? I watch a few people on RUclips and they find some really good stuff I want to try dumpster diving ❤
Great video!! 🎉 love your food bank but ours gives out old, smashed, moldy vegetables and fruit it’s up to us to try to save it, most the time it’s far gone for it😞 it’s sad, wished ours was as nice as yours ❤
Try measuring out the base of flour like you would your normal pie crust. Probably already has shortening in it. Try googling it and see what you find out
The food bank I volunteer at does NOT go through and sort. The director actually told us that the customers can decide to throw away. I think this is sad myself...it's the one thing I disagree with at this particular food pantry.
Our local food bank gives people rotten food all the time. All my friends got apricots lately that were completely fuzzy with mold. They absolutely do not sort through it first. I get that they probably don't have enough volunteers.
Check out my local food bank here! missoulafoodbank.org/
@MamaB You mentioned you didn’t feel like you belong somewhere and that made me smile because you’ve made us feel like we belong with YOU… 💕
Aw thank you!
This was a wonderful video, Mama Baird's
So great!
I am glad you are doing this
Your children seeing you volunteer is another lesson that they are learning. They are watching and growing in your steps. Way to go Mom!
Thank you!

Wow that’s awsome that the bad stuff gets used!!
It's so nice for you to get out and be with other adults 💝 what a feeling of being able to give back & be apart of it 💝 that definitely makes u feel proud and belong💝
It really does! I feel like I've found where I'm ment to be!

Hand pies, Pot pies, empanaddas, Pot Pie soup. (It's a thing). Pies for the Holidays. You will be an expert pie maker 😅
Folenteiring at the food bank is definitely a win winl
Grape jam.. equal sugar to fruit. Add pectin. Yum

I can't believe they give you moldy food. Thats gross.

That's an amazing haul. Volunteering is great for the soul
I can feel it in my soul already!
The food bank I tried for the first time in the past week, actually gives out fruits and vegetables with bruises and even mould on them.
I understand that. Not every food bank has the building or volunteers to go through all the food and make sure it's safe to give out.
The peppers you are sending to the "goats" make me want to cry. I love all bell peppers but at $5/# i have to pass by them at the grocery store.

Aw I'm so sorry Sammi. People really do suck sometimes.
You're doing good work... keep it up!
Thank you!
If you go to Costco ask a bakery associate about how they mix the pie crust mix.
Lol i love how concered the kids were about the cake. 😂
It's important!! Haha
Sounds like a win win all around. You also seem happier getting out and socializing with adults once in awhile 😊.
It really is so nice! I've been missing social interactions. It gets lonely at times home alone with the kids all day.

I’m sure if you call Costco they might be able to tell you. But there’s all the savoury pies too. Quiches? Yum, yum.
Three Rivers homestead she makes a amazing looking grape pie. Might be a idea for you.

Great haul. Yeah you have great food bank. Love you have plans for your haul. Banana pie 🥧 sounds 😋 yummy. Lol have great day Carolina
A banana pie would be perfect! Thanks Carol!
Use pie crust base like bisquick or other packaged mix.
Add some blueberries and have quick breakfast biscuits. Or bacon and onion for savory

Can you Freeze Dry some of the Pie Mix. I’m pretty sure you can. You can for sure Freeze Dry some of the Bananas & Dehydrate some.
Hmm...I'm not sure!
Can you make grape leather?
most of the produce we get from our food bank is smush
👀 It up on RUclips.
yes

Try measuring out the base of flour like you would your normal pie crust. Probably already has shortening in it. Try googling it and see what you find out
Thank you!
That would be awesome if my food bank did this!! I often pull moldy bread for them :/
Also try canning graoe juice!?!?
I will have to catch the replay
Our food bank stinks
Hey Carolina! Great video! Wanted to give you a tip for the bananas. They are yummy freeze dried. Great snack for the kiddos.
I'll give that a go! Thank you!

Oh that's a great idea!
