  • I hope this will brighten your day! I still can't get over the incredible sound of Aeolian Skinner Opus 150a at St John the Divine. It's like driving an extremely highly-charged Maserati. Some friends accompanied me to my rehearsal last night and we filmed a bit of Widor on a couple of iPhones. Sound is via my Zoom H 5. Turn the volume up quite high, poor a nice large glass of French red and enjoy ...

The most important division of this magnificent organ is the 16,000,000 sq ft of air space enclosed in this cathedral.
One would think that this organ is the largest in NYC,but it isn't by a third.
This instrument shows what 141 ranks of pipe organ can and should sound when playing this piece.
    Eight seconds of decay.
This is " how you do a ball".

The electronic organ being used ,currently, is a fine "imitation " of a pipe organ. But it can't "hold a candle " to this magnificent beast of a pipe organ.
Love his tempo because I am able to relax and enjoy the whole toccata.
The best part of this performance is the seven seconds of decay.

This was always played for high holidays at my childhood church. This organ, I've actually been in the pipes. Family vacays with my dad...we explored pipe organs all over the country.

Such power. I have a recording of Jaon Lippincott playing this piece or music, on this organ, and the very best part of the recording was the ten seconds of "decay" after she finished this glorious piece.
I love the tempo. I can hear the entire piece sixteenth notes and all not just the pedal.

BRAVO!! I love how Mr. Briggs played at a tempo that allowed me to savior each delicious note and chord of this simple but demanding organ work.
The "eight " second decay is a wonderful finish to this toccata.

Beautiful performance, David. I liked the sforzandi in the quiet passage--very effective!

Sounds remarkably well given how long the reverb is in that room. Impressive! Most organists would blast through this like there’s a fire in the building and turn it into a jumbled up, incoherent mess. I can hear the individual notes on this! Widor would be proud!

Great video. This is one of the few good sounding and good looking organ videos. Most of the time it is recorded on a phone without a tripod and there are no recordings of the pedals

Complimenti !

How do you manage with such a cavernous acoustic? Wonderfully played!

The 2nd Congregational Church in Rockford Illinois has a large Skinner Organ, and when the Toccata was played at East, the whole cathedral area shook when the fff stops were hit. Unfortunately, a recording was never made of the organist playing the Toccata
