- Fred Hall 2019 starts tomorrow! Figured it would be the best time to talk about the tackle and techniques I use when fishing for yellowtail / kingfish and offshore fishing for tuna and dorado.
I will be at Fred Hall Long Beach on Saturday. If you see me please stop me and say whats up!
If you have any other methods, lures, or styles of fishing that you personally like to use for yellowtail, please share in the comment section below to help out others who are trying to get into this kind of fishing!
Hope this video helped you learn something new.

Rad video ray. Always cool seeing what other people are throwing!
Bryan Timm thanks bro. I always have people asking what I use so figure it would be a good video topic. You going to Fred hall LB or are you gonna wait for the SD stop?
Dirty Hookers i think i am going to head up Friday.
Bryan Timm for sure. I won’t be able to make it till Saturday. Let’s try and set up a collab trip when the season starts picking up!👊
Good stuff bro!!! Very informative!!! Keep up the good work! Ill be at Fred Hall Show on Saturday. Maybe ill run into you there.
REELDEALJOJO Orozco thanks brotha! I’ll keep an eye out for you there!
I catch Yellows on poppers all day long, dude. Have for years. I've also caught Calicos on them as well.
Sandy Collora that’s awesome. I know they’d work because that’s what they use in Australia and NZ, but I just haven’t seen it done out here. I definitely wanna give it a try
Dirty Ndhhnbstngnhcan you iMessage
Your videos are really helpful! Thanks for the tips
Matt Aden thanks for the kind words! Trying to do the best I can to share what I’ve learned.
Nice vid brother! As for your non swimmers ( jigs ) you can tweek out your Irons if you have a grinding wheel or a Dremel.. I've turned some duds into amazing swimmers just by grindin out the hips and even flattening out the tail end! Hope this helps and use eye protection!👍✌
I’ll have to give that a try thanks brotha! The only downfall is losing the color that’s on the jigs if I do that haha.
@@Dirty.Hookers krylon brotha!👍😉
Make a video please!
Great video with lots of information. That bag must weigh a ton! Keep them coming.
Lol the bag used to weigh way to much! Over the last 2 years my dad and I have been trying to downsize and only take the minimal necessities. Probably weighs half as much now, but some trips it has to be heavier than others depending on what we’re targeting
This is info I didn’t know I wanted to know. I’ll get on a boat one day, but it’s really dope to see what others keep on them.
Geomar Domingo yeah for sure! I always keep an eye out on what other people are throwing. If I see something I don’t have that produces fish, I make sure to add it to the bag
Just bought this bag, it's really a perfect bag! Cool videos, keep it up!
STOKED4FISHIN love my turners bag! Thanks👊
Thanks for the info brotha been watching your videos the last couple months. I’m going to the Fred Hall show tomorrow so you made this video just in time for me!
Derek Sousa glad I was able to help! I wanted to upload it sooner but this one took a long time to edit. Barely got it up in time. Have fun!
Great video - I have the same bag! I won a really nice Shimano backpack-style tackle bag but still haven't switched over yet - you organize your bag and side pouches very similar to mine - my garage is my "base-camp" too and I will start to build out what I am bringing a few days ahead of a trip - for multi-day trips I take the SKB Box - but Full-Day and overnight the soft bags work well too. I have one side pouch dedicated to surface irons (similar colors - but I like the bird-sh*t and wounded soldier colors too) - totally agree on the comments about surface irons or any other lure you are gonna throw - if you don't walk up to rail with total confidence - might as well not be using that particular bait - I learned that when I was BASS fishing on local tournaments and mid-sized tourneys - you have to have total confidence in what you throw. I switched over to the Nomad Jig Bags for my BFT stuff - I also now only have the bottom hook on and have separate pouches for all-types of fluro-leaders - i attach the assist-hooks to the leader and makes for easy switching of knife jigs - flat falls- etc without retying - just don't forget the split-ring pliers.
Hell yeah thanks for all the feedback brotha! And yeah definitely split ring pliers are a must have when going out. Especially when having your flat falls and knife jigs rigged like that. Really quick and efficient for rigging up!
I'm watching this video for like the 10th time
Lol. I filmed an updated version yesterday. Hopefully will be uploading this week. Narrowed it all down to 1 clear tackle box to be a little more realistic
@@Dirty.Hookers can’t wait to see it!
Watching it for the 4th or 5th time myself... :-))
Big guy, I live live in Texas (originally from SoCal) I only use flat fall for tuna and it is an exceptional lure, here we only use 65# braid and up because u can actually hook to something humongous, literally in 100's of pounds and this is only 100yds from shore, the these can't cast for crap!!!
Just picked up some tady 45s hopefully I'll get lucky this season! Thanks for the tips
SmokedOutHemi 2 tady 45’s are by far my favorite! My most favorite jig I’ve ever owned, I lost to a sea lion. Still so pissed about it
I only caught one YT last year, I was trying the flatfall and I caught 3skipjack my first time using it. thanks for this video because I want to catch more yellowtail on lures this year, I especially want to chuck irons this year
tokay999 the flat falls always get bit! I’m jealous, I’ve only caught 2 skip jack on lures. I spent 2 trips with wide open bite on them grinding out flat falls, colt snipers, stick baits, poppers, and irons and to this day only caught 2 on a lure. Sometimes they just key in on bait
Whats up bro? Been waiting for a vid. Seasons coming, lets get it!
JUS1ONTHEBEAT can’t wait for some warm weather! I’ve only fished 1 time since 2019 started
Sweet vid man , honestly love all your vids and keep it up!! I can’t wait to get out there this summer and slayyy
Peach Movemen thanks I really appreciate that! I’m so ready for some warm weather and the season to pick up!
Thanks for the tips bro. ! 👍👊
Tommy Patoc glad to help!👊
Good video, bro. Hope you’re doing a Fred Hall vlog. I’d like to see what you ended up with.
jerry lee I didn’t film too much yesterday but I’ll be filming everything I got today and piece it all together. Hopefully will be up tonight or tomorrow
Thanks for the info. Super helpful.
Happy to help
Nice video brotha! Very good info I’ll keep that in mind next time I go out over to the Channel Islands for yellows! Shout out from Santa Barbara #805
Miguel Zavaleta thanks bro I appreciate it! I’m in camarillo, so maybe we’ll run into eachother some day! Tight lines brotha👊🏼
I have to resist the urge to buy new rod/reels at Fred Hall. Focus on getting bulk deals of tackle. Good run down of your bag.
Anotherflores91 I know what you mean! The rod and reel deals are hard to beat but I really need to load up on terminal tackle for future trips
A buddy of mine ties up a purple, black and white deceiver pattern that he tosses on the flyrod. He hooked and landed a 20 lb yellowtail over at La Jolla kelp on that pattern. He said it mimics anchovies when they're around
I like how you said ONE torpedo sinker!! Not 6, not 4, but ONE!! That's right ladies and gentlemen, ONE😆😆 classic 🤙
Sergio Rodriguez no need for a bunch of extra weight if you can’t bottom fish🤷♀️. 1or 2 for a rubber band rig and you’re good
Dude, I could never get away with 30lb and 40lb leaders for yellowtail/amberjack /kingfish in Korea....I use a min of 80lb, mostly 100, too much lava structure here around Jeju island....they swallow a 12 inch macky and run straight to structure! Fishing on the shore btw, but boat coming soon!!!!
Some spots fishing structure for yellowtail/kingfish out here, I know people fish 80lb dropper loops. That’s how a lot of the fish above 50lbs are caught here in California and Baja.
But majority of our yellowtail in California are caught in 40-100ft deep water, but on the surface. Or offshore off floating debris, which is why we’re able to get away lighter line like 30lb - 50lb
I’ll get lots of crappie jigs thanks dude
Matt Ware hahahahaha😂. Too good!
Another great video. Hope to cross paths with you this year, burger and a beer on me.
Walter thanks brotha! And that would be awesome if you ever see me on the water, please say what’s up!
Bonine pills work to. The only places I know that have them are cvs and target.
Noah Arquero yeah. I just get Dramamine cuz it’s usually at any kind of grocery/convenient store
Dude! I was just talking about you on another channel ( jingslinger ). Get ready. This season will be the best
5 Min Keto jigsingers slays!! He’s puts out some good videos too! I’ve learned some stuff from his videos as well. Can’t wait for some warm weather and water to roll through!
Nice hat
Deathwing RUclips my favorite one
Hey Ray...
Great vid man!
For me it was just a ton of info! Being that I live in So. Az, not , SoCal....I need all the help I can get😁
I try to get over for 3-4 trips a year, mostly 3/4 out of Seaforth, 2-3 days in a row. I’m an avid fisherman, just didn’t grow up with saltwater...it’s my fave now, and vids like yours and Jigslingers really help! Thanks for taking the time to share what you have learned.....good karma coming your way!!!
Brett
JM 501 thanks a lot! I always appreciate the kind words! I’ve learned some good info from jigslingers and well. He puts out some good videos! I’m always happy to help with any info I am able to provide for other anglers. If you ever have any questions feel free to ask! Hope this info helps you get on a slob this year!
I always get the heavy gear. 40 lb fluro 40 braid 60 mono and so on. Bunch of other lures.
Hello I'm new to your fishing RUclips channel I love pier fishing 🎣 out her in California question ❓ what Baitcast combos did you use for the Tady jigs and the anchovy jig
For the heavy Tady’s, a conventional reel is ideal. Daiwa saltist or saltiga 35, or a shimano torium or trinidad 16 or 20.
For light jigs like surface irons, if you wanted to use a baitcaster, I’d use a size 400 or 500 bait caster. So far only Shimano has a 500, that’s the tranx 500
For size 400 reels, there a Daiwa Lexa or Prorex, Okuma Komodo, shimano Tranx, and Penn Fathom and Squal that all I can think of the top of my head.
And for conventional all, same previous reels I listed above, but bait caster is a bit easier to cast when learning
Excellent guy, fairly decent video. As for the constructive criticism you ask for, I can say this: at in the beginning of the video you tell us to only use what you trust and not to waste your time on others. Then at the end of the video do you instruct us to experiment and try different things. These are contradictory but well meant. Put them in aligned context end it will be fine, call attention to the contradiction and tell how that works for the viewer. Number two, most of the artificial bait that you hold up cannot be seen i clearly at all in the video as they are covered up with plastic or too far away. I would love to have seen a close-up of the waxwing and several other artaficals you have there. Can't tell what you're recommending half the time. The video was well thought out and helped. Thank you
Really appreciate your feedback thank you🙏!
Hopefully will be able to make an updated video here soon, as this one is a little out of date.
I’ll definitely be taking your input into consideration and try to word things a little better.
Along with trying my best to holding each lure up to the camera for a closer and better look at what I am talking about.
Thanks again. Really appreciate!
What documentation do you need to fish the coronados?
Eric Oakley for private boats I don’t know. For sports boats, you just need a passport
Fred Hall is scheduled for LA, whats up with SD?!?!?!?!
At least there will be a fred hall show this year! Does suck that they aren’t doing every location though
if fish are biting they will hit just about anything regardless of color. adding bucktail or surgical tubing to the hook will increase chances of strike, because dressing the hook adds action and attraction to the artificial bait
I am surprised that there are absolutely no hooks dressed with bucktail, flash-aboo [fly tying materials] or surgical tube.
on the East Coast I used to cast plenty of metal jigs like Hopkins or AVA [never heard the term surface jigs or surface metal]. My all time favorite was 1.5 oz. stainless Hopkins w/ green surgical tube single hook. Casts great without much effort or stress and always gets hits.
I switched to casting metal jigs for Bluefish and Striped Bass, because swimming plugs or surface plugs are expensive and get chewed up.
A favorite among East Coast surfcasters is a bucktail jig w/ pork rind. Look it up. Might be a very effective weapon with Yellows.
Your lineup of rods and reels is exactly the class that I would use for Blues and Stripers
As soon as I saw buck tail and surgical tube, I had a feeling you fished bluefish and striper on the east coast. The east coast fishery and tactics from what I’ve seen in videos looks a lot different from how we fish out here.
Souther California - Baja Mexico is a very unique fishery unseen almost by anywhere else in the world.
Lol I will say that if anyone from the east coast saw us casting a 10’ rod with a conventional reel with chunk of aluminum tied to the line, they’d probably think we were crazy.
That’s just the style we have out here. It’s a very unique style for sure
@@Dirty.Hookers on the East Coast we do "diamond jigging" ... basically the same thing, but the lure shapes are different. Really enjoy your videos, and love the rod & reel collection. Thanks for taking the time to read and reply !
@@Dirty.Hookers QUESTION: when you refer to "surface iron" what exactly are the weights, and materials that the lures are made of ? Thanks ! Jim
@@Clambelly surface irons are fully aluminum. Ranging from 1.5oz - 2oz.
They stay about 1-2 inches under the water through the whole retrieve and swim almost like a bass glide bait.
Wouldn’t hurt to invest in one and try it out out there. There’s even videos on how to “wire” a surface iron, that way you won’t get bit off and lose it to a bluefish
@@Dirty.Hookers probably slay the bass, blues and schoolie tuna in the fall... thanks !
YO! I live out in Camarillo. Lets do some fishing! Been going out every weekend at the harbors and shores. Rain been messin stuff up out here.
Kekin Arse I’ve been having the same problem. Haven’t fished in over a month. Hmu on insta if you have it, that’s the best way to contact me
Sup, Have you tried JRI irons? Stinger is a hot one and very affordable jig, but the JRI family of jigs are bad ass
SocalSteve I have not use one yet. I was hoping to pic some up at the show. I’ve heard a lot of hype on them over the past year. Are the machine made do you know? I honestly don’t know anything about those jigs haha
Not machined made molded like a tady. But check them out, I know day at the docks they have a booth and have a deal on them. @@Dirty.Hookers
SocalSteve I wish I could be apart of day at the docks. That’s a mission for me. I’m from Ventura county. But sounds like they have consistent swimmers so I definitely wanna try one out. And brass yo-yo jigs are pretty awesome too!
What tackle bag is that?
Sharky 707 turners tackle backpack
Great Video! I’m working on updating my gear. What pack is that?
Bravo’s Aventuras it’s a turners outdoors tackle bag
Fred Hall is going on in LB right now, Caivo surface irons are 5 for 20. Any thoughts or opinions on those specific irons?
Isaia Wright sorry I’m replying to this a little late for Fred hall, but I actually don’t know anything about the cavio jigs. I’ve seen them on Instagram but I’ve never heard of anyone who has used them so idk if they’re good swimming jigs or not
Ray Sharifi... taller than a tree-he
Chad Harley.... who lives in a pineapple under the sea-he
I just got some new mc 7 inch swimbaits and the colors are bleeding kelpfish and blue grunion would those work
big E ass For calicos they would definitely work for sure! The blue grunion would be good when calicos are feeding on bait fish, and the kelp fish is really good fishing around kelp
I heard this from someone before...."Colors catches the fisherman and not the fish". That being said, Is the lure's color really matter? In the Philippines where I grew up, we didn't use lures, nor rods, nor reels. Just a fishing line, a hook, and a bait, and we catch fish just the same. Keep your tackle box as simple as you possibly can. Or.... Let's go fish in the Philippines.
So the whole color doesn’t matter thing is a huge debate in the fishing world. Specifically the sportfishing world.
When the fish hit a lure like a surface iron, yoyo iron, or flatfall it is a reaction bite, so in theory color shouldn’t matter because they’re just reacting to the action of the lure.
However on some slow days where you gotta finesse a lure, after acouple fish land on the boat, I do like to pay attention to what color those fish were caught on because I do feel color plays a roll sometimes in a picky bite.
As for bait fishing, if I go out to fish bait, I really don’t have much in the box. Acouple hooks, acouple different line sizes, go out there and have fun. But for fishing with artificials, is where it gets a bit more overboard. I definitely overpack a lot
@@Dirty.Hookers I see your point on slow days.... But how do we know what color the fish prefer? I'd say, a lure that mimics the color and movement of a live bait will probably be more preferred.
@@HoofHearted_Eh I’m right there with you. I’ve always been a fan of natural colored lures. But with that being said, my confidence color for fishing yellowtail is mint. I also like white and blue, but mint is my go to, which is not the most natural color
I know this is a older video but could you use a flat fall jig for YT on the same set up as i use on a YoYo jig or do you need a specific action for the rod?
I bought a holographic purple 4/0 because of this video, hoping to slay with it. Have you ever been to or heard of Long Beach fishing supplies?
PS: keep the videos coming 👍
T Kovach that’s awesome! Glad I was able to help! I’ll always keep the videos coming lol. And I haven’t been there but I follow them on Instagram. They make the Caivo jigs right?
Dirty Hookers yes they do, they have good stuff from 1/3 to 1/2 off the name brand prices. And another one of my local tackle shops has shimano flat falls buy two get one free but they only have phantom squid and sand eel colors. What are your opinions on those colors? You said u haven’t used sand eel but have you heard anything about phantom squid?
T Kovach the sand eel I could see being pretty good for rockfish and even calico or sandbass while fishing structure. The Phantom is another color that’s supposed to be really good for tuna. I have a buddy who swears by the phantom and refuses to fish any other color flatfall. I personally haven’t tried it because the sardine and glow are my 2 favorite colors. I still keep both of those in my tackle box though! If we come up on a school of tuna, might not be a bad time to give it a shot
Dirty Hookers sweet thanks bro I’m going to buy more. Thanks
T Kovach yeah man! Happy to help. There’s always a time and place for each color. Doesn’t hurt to Change it up if something else isn’t working
Hey dude will steel baits be at Fred hall
Roger Behle steel baits will be at the fish elite booth!
Did you say the mint line pattern is your go too with the irons?
My go to surface iron of all time is a all mint Tady 45
how many grams are the flat falls? what size should I get?
sean carner I personally like 100g for 100ft or less, 160g for 200ft or less. And 200g for up to 250ft
@@Dirty.Hookers when fishing the flat fall do you use mono or fluro liter?
VanityCrookz I personally use mono. I know some people will fish flouro.
With the flatfalls a lot of time when you get bit, it’s on the retrieve like yoyo fishing for yellowtail. That’s what makes me use mono, so that I can have some stretch in the line when the fish bites
Have you ever tried the Caivo surface irons?
Eric Marroquin I have not. I actually haven’t heard of anyone who’s used them either so idk how well they kick. I follow them on Instagram and they look good but just never seen the swim in person
Looks like you fish Channel Islands a lot are you guys local in Ventura
Shon Pallan yessir. Lived in Ventura county my whole life. Grew up fishing the Channel Islands

I saw you had a wax wing in your box but you didn't mention it. I have a lot of them and I've had some success with them. What's your take on the wax wing
Mike Henry over the years, I’ve really started liking the wax wings a lot for barracuda and calico fishing. But for the most part, during a surface bite I’ve just grown to love the surface iron over anything else.
Is 30 lb line good enough for jigging
Evan McTaggart I do a minimum of 40 because for yo yos, the fish strike at a much higher speed
