The passion, pride and respect is totally mutual.
    The greatest rivalry in rugby

Schalk has a mindset like no other. When Jerome Kaino - the hardest all black - says SB is the toughest player he's ever come up against says everything.

I met him years back when he started playing rugby, I think he hadn't play for the Boks yet, but knew it was only a matter of time. What a humble nice guy. He introduced himself with a big friendly smile, great manners. Schalk you legend!

He does an online show with Jean De Villiers called 'Use It Or Lose It,' where they interview various SA Rugby players past and present. Highly recommend it.

'86? That was the rebel 'Cavaliers' squad which was not officially backed by the NZRU, did not officially represent the All Blacks brand and risked banishment from sport in NZ.

When the rest of the world turned their backs on South Africa and the Boks during apartheid, they (even though they were only masquerading as the Cavaliers) made the effort to play us. Respect, we will never forget that and that is why we have such a great rivalry, because of the spirit it embodies.

NZ rugby threw all of this away during covid, no more super rugby and the end of the rugby championship is sure to follow, thanks NZ.

Your dad didn’t play the All Blacks in 86. That was an unofficial New Zealand team called the Cavaliers. It was missing key players such as John Kirwan who was at that stage far and away the best winger in the world.

Only two players from the NZ '85 squad (Kirwan and Kirk) didn't join the Cavaliers. Eight of the starting 15 of the WC '87 final were in the Cavaliers. Coached by Colin Meads. You can call it what you want, that was an All Black team and they lost that tour 3-1.
