  • In Norway pushing my self built campervan winter vanlife Arctic trip to the extreme towards Nordkapp on the E69 highway. But the road is currently closed. Will I fail to complete my ridiculous goal?
    Continuing my adventure north and my goal to reach the most northerly point in mainland Europe. However I start to learn that this road has a reputation for being dangerous especially in the winter and I will soon learn why. Weather conditions has closed the road today potentially tomorrow there will be a convoy heading north I push as far north as I can towards the coastal settlement of Honningsvåg. I look for a park up to hide from a coming storm.
    Check out my cold weather & winter van life upgrade videos to see what changes I made to the van for this trip.

      Whilst unfortunately the range and recharge times for electric vans at the minute isn’t there. That being said there were 2 Tesla and a polestar made it up to Nordcapp whilst I was there. And I was surprised by the sheer number of electric vehicles, hybrids and recharge points I saw in Sweden and Norway. But I guess there’s a big difference between using one as your daily driver and using one is a overland vehicle

      @@MispronouncedAdventures it is kinda crazy how much energy is actually in fossil fuels. Engines aren't even that efficient! Most of it just gets converted to heat. Of course, waste heat isn't entirely a bad thing in -30°C.

    • @MispronouncedAdventures

      Yeah even in the van. Lots of energy in the fossil fuel. I make use of waste heat, waste heat from the diesel heater unit in its cupboard it’s location gets warm from the unit and it’s ducting, I have a fan which then blows that warm air underneath the to lithium batteries of my leisure battery bank to heat them

    Next time visiting north Scandinavia at this time of year,just start of by buying tires made for the job in hand and be done with it so you can enjoy your trip.😜🇳🇴

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  2 года назад

      Yep never not enjoyed the trip. The tyres have been absolutely great on 95% of the road conditions. The only time I have slight problems where when conditions was above zero and conditions of a ice had turned to slushy. Studs aren’t going to to be any more helpful on deteriorating ice or slush than any other tyre surely. However I would prefer to not be around during the winter to spring transition where those conditions are more prevalent

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  2 года назад

      It has however been one of the polarising opinions of my trip. I had quite a few people who live that far north say they would be absolutely fine, whilst another say I need it studs. They did seem to be the most popular model on the foreign vehicles I came across as well.
      My opinion if it counts for anything. 95% of the roads I drove on compacted snow. But I wouldn’t want to be driving on the road when it came to the autumn turning to winter or winter turn into spring when my tyres wouldn’t be suitable due to the amount of pure ice

    Talk about a cliff hanger. Probably a bit late for now but have you though about getting some MaxTrax or similar? Not sure if your van is 4x4 but from experience you only need to drop a front wheel into a soft verge or snow covered ditch to lift a rear wheel & loose traction. Seen them used a lot when there's nothing to winch to, considered an essential bit of kit in the 4x4 world. For me when I got stuck after an hour of messing around I eventually decided to jack up the front of the van & reverse off the jack, not ideal but it got me out.

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  2 года назад +1

      I’ve had thought about them and I thinking longer term I might look at some getting a set. As I could see how they would help. So far I’ve only had to dig myself out once when I drove into really deep snow as I took the wrong car park entrance. My van is only rear wheel drive
      As for the cliffhanger, The next episode is a good one!

      @@MispronouncedAdventures Only thing I would say is I'm not sure how they would hold up in the super cold as they are plastic & may get brittle. Did notice what looked to be similar metal ones on the German camper trailer which might be better suited to the cold.

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  2 года назад +1

      I think the cold and how it affects plastic would be more important with the storage prior to use. If I stored them externally then yes if they’re -25 they might become a lot more brittle I’d guess. But if I had internal storage in the back of one of my cupboards I can’t imagine they would get that cold even when in contact with snow. the snow itself is not the particularly cold part it’s the air temperature which is where the seriously cold numbers are

    If ur in the snow alot maybe u could benefit from a heat pad under the solar panel ran from the van battery while driving it could keep it thawed out and clear helping to collect as much scarse sunlight as possible

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  2 года назад +2

      I did looking into lots of ideas for the solar. The issue I’d have came across was the majority of the trip was well below zero so any heat applied for solar panels to melt snow it’s just gonna end up turning that into ice I think and in long-term compound the problem more more will ice buildup.
      However for this trip I added a second battery the battery charger so when the engine is running I am charging at 65 amp continually. Which every day only takes and hour or 2 to be back to 100%

      Yeah that’s what I was thinking “gritting” was there. sand and grit as in rock. I think I muddled my words speaking in the video because Where in the UK we would use the same term “gritting” but only refers to salt. I mean it makes sense why salt would not be effective. As it get cold enough that even the salty water would freeze. Unlike the UK! Probably far better for vehicles and corrosion not using so on the roads!
      I am currently left the area, as I think getting towards the transition period between winter and spring I would run into more difficult driving conditions on my tyres which don’t have studs. whilst they’re in the winter on the compact snow Roads and so on grip has never been an issue.

The 5% where it sheet ice on the road ( wear studs would be helpful ) or slushy (where nothing is helpful ) are the only times I’ve had traction issues. Majority of the time when it’s below -5 everything is frozen and I have plenty of grip.
