    First meal... Get a minimum of 30 grams of complete protein, 50 grams maximum, if you want to stimulate muscle protein synthesis....
    Eating more will not be used for muscle protein synthesis but will get used elsewhere.
    I doubt it matters if you need to combine it, like bread and peanut butter.
    The longer version of this is worth listening to.

      Young people can synthesize lower amounts of protein. Older people need to eat bigger amount of protein due to reduced ability to synthesize protein unless it hits 30grams.

      @@Naaaaam78 They say that one should delay eating upon rising due to the levels of raised cortisol?
      With so much information out there I would go with a try and error approach and see what works BEST for you.
      If I took the advice. I recently read about eating breakfast early (Between 7 and 8) I'd be forcing myself to eat, sod that.
      I eat when I feel hungry and not when an article tells me to.

      @@Naaaaam78 @Nali7890 That is the question. On another upload I viewed, it mentioned one should refrain from eating 2 hours after waking because of cortisol.
      Do you listen to so-called experts or do you listen to your body. I like to think, listening to how your body is, is a good idea.
      What do you think or what do you do?

    I would love to know exactly what Professor Layman eats for breakfast. I vaguely remember him saying in another video that at least part of his breakfast is a smoothy with protein powder. But of course, I want all the details! :-) Thank you for the video Dr. Lyon. Don is a national nutritional treasure.

      It’s whey protein powder with blueberries and yogurt mixed together. He’s said it many times in other videos.

    Is it advisable/more effective for muscle protein synthesis to take a branch chain amino acid supplement instead of a whey protein shake or food protein source for breakfast?

    The fear now is that the honesty of so-called "studies" may be questionable. Politically driven agenda seem to increasingly be creeping into and contaminating pure scientific inquiry.

      @@blendersarelikevegans Accurate term for agenda driven by political interests. For example, meat free diets. The anti-meat agenda is embraced by political groups who influence studies to produce outcomes which are unfavorable to meat-based protein diets. The study mentioned in this video is an example of that very thing.

    I’m trying to gain weight after I unintentionally became very skinny (doctors don’t know why). I can’t eat much 😢. What to do???

      you want to build and gain healthy skeletal muscle. You can still be skinny however that skeletal muscle building is key!

    This is crazy. Most impotant meal is breakfast and high protein at night is useless? So NOT what experts have been saying including Dr. Lyon. Also studies have been coming out that skipping meals is not good so to me making fasting not as effective as experts have been saying???

    Speculation, assumptions, and short-term studies are meaningless against real-world experience. Red meat as a high-quality protein for muscle growth... works.

      What is the big deal about eating like our ancestors? Our ancestors are dead. Eliminating good carbs will catch up with you. Your colon will be sick and your testosterone will be wrecked. Since our ancestors didnt have electricity go live in a cave dude

    I just started following Dr Gabriel Lyon on her different podcasts. Whether on her own podcast or on other people's podcasts.
    Anyway , for the last couple years I've been jogging alot having run 3 -1/2 marathons in the last year. I did resistance training 3 or 4 days a week but it was high rep and low weight and even though I was eating super clean I neglected my protein requirements. I ended up with low T levels and lots of belly fat.
    So I just revamped my diet, jogging and weight training going for hitt sprinting and heavier weights.
    I'm going to track my progress with pictures etc. and check back in a month.
    Dr Lyon I'm sorry but I was disappointed with your book. Most of the content, stories etc. I already heard in the podcasts I have listened to. But its nice to read now and then instead of podcasts. ❤

    So basically, regardless of the diet just don't eat too much. Makes sense. Just for overall health and muscle growth, I liked Dave Palumbo's Keto diet. It wasn't the medical version where you eat tons of fat and little protein. The majority of your calories would be from protein lots of veggies, and different kinds of fat.

      Tons of fat will not work for everyone. It will make some people ill. Especially those with hyerinsulinemia.

      Yeah not high fat. Enough protein and sensible amounts of fat. Dr William Davis says fibre is import as well. His passion is SIBO and insulin.

    OK so the first meal is critical. I'd like to know if it makes a material difference if one works out before the first meal or if one needs to work out within 2 hours of said meal. Does it matter if one waits until later in the day to maximize muscle protein synthesis?

      The sooner you eat the sooner your body can synthesize muscle growth. Small difference in short run, could be big difference long run.

      ​@@PhxphenomOld School thinking was that you had a very short window after training to eat protein along with carbs. More recent research says that the window is much larger (ex. 24 hrs) and that you don't need the carbs with the protein. So, eat protein around your training in a way that is comfortable for you

      Many people do need to eat. Sometimes, a fast is something you have to gradually and gently work towards.

      Just make sure whatever the protein is, it's a complete protein source, even if you need to combine it.

      1/4 cup green peas (dry) 12 grams protein
      1/4 cup lentil(dry) 9 grams protein
      1 serving Tofu(organic) 14 grams protein
      1/4 cup brown rice 3 grams protein
      light greek yogurt 13 grams protein (eat while the above is cooking)
      ===================================================
      51 grams protein
      can mix and swap with 1/3 cup barley 5 grams, 1/2 cup oats 5 grams,
      1/3 cup quinoa, tempeh 2 grams/strip, protein drink 30 grams, boiled egg 4-6 grams protein

      My breakdown...
      Cottage cheese 300 grams=33 grams of protein.
      4 large Eggs= 24 grams of protein.
      Total 57 grams.

      Priotize the highest quality protein. If you are not vegan it’s easier, but you can do it with a vegetarian or vegan diet.

    I never eat breakfast but I intermittent fast every day. I'm 5. 9 and 167 lbs and I eat about 90% carnivore and have dropped 15lbs and 2.5 inched from my waist. It's about avoiding hyperinsulinemia and carbohydrates. Fasting does a great job of handling insulin levels and high fat animal products handle the rest. Simple. My boss is 60 and eats like an 8 year old. Cookies and milk before bed and 3 meals a day. Skinny with a metabolism that I haven't had in 40 years. We're all so different but the vast majority of us struggle with weight at some point. If you want to gain muscle, it doesn't have to be complicated. Eat animal products until you're full, lift weights and do some high intensity interval training . Done.

      @@shawnadams1693I start the day with 14oz of coffee with heavy cream and monk fruit powdered sweetener. Lunch is an 8-10oz broiled pork chop with a cup of cottage cheese. I have another coffee prepared the same way as earlier. Dinner is (on a good day) 14-16 oz of ribeye or New York strip with a cup of rice or small baked potato. On a cheaper day, I will substitute a quarter roast chicken for dinner with maybe some broccoli or rice pilaf. The carbs are dangerous because the more I have the more I want. If I don’t eat enough meat I will always go to the carbs and over do it. This sounds dumb but when in doubt, eat more meat.

    56 yrs old and I’ve been one meal a day for over a decade to manage type2 and wanted to add in two quality protein meals earlier in the day to retain muscle but it has made my blood sugar skyrocket and unmanageable. Even just adding one back in wreaks my BS. Back to one meal I guess and hope my muscle loss is kept to a minimum🤞

      The bottom line is calories matters regardless of what you eat you shouldn't consume too much calories, Also red meat is healthier than what mainstream media want you to believe
