In Northwest Montana, a vacation home serves as a retreat for a young family, nestled amidst the natural beauty of a Ponderosa pine forest and a lake. Designed to blend with its surroundings, the house features reclaimed barnwood siding that weathers over time, integrating it into the forest landscape. The central living area boasts expansive windows offering panoramic views of the lake, creating a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors. Native plantings and outdoor spaces, like a screened porch and covered deck, enhance the family's interaction with nature throughout the year.
Each room in the house provides a connection to the natural environment. The master bedroom, located on the upper level, offers uninterrupted views of the lake through its surrounding glass walls. Additional structures on the property, including a playroom and storage space for outdoor gear, further facilitate the family's outdoor lifestyle.
Inspired by their camping experiences on the land, the home's design maintains a sense of exploration and discovery. A pathway winds through the forest, leading from the driveway to the lake, guiding occupants past various outdoor spaces such as covered decks and a fire pit.
Completed in 2016, this 6,500-square-foot project was led by architect Tom Kundig and his team, with key consultants contributing to its success. The design garnered recognition, including the 2018 Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Award, for its harmonious integration with its natural surroundings and thoughtful approach to family living amidst the wilderness.
