  • So I've been neglecting the 20 long and its now covered in algae. Lets try a whole tank hydrogen peroxide treatment!

This is often referred to as the "one two punch" method to eradicate algae from your aquarium. Fish tanks and algae often go hand in hand; but you dont have to live with the unsightly mess! Hydrogen peroxide does a fantastic job of killing algae! So does bleach....but that can be a bit trickier.
Now you can "spot treat" with hydrogen peroxide to kill small areas of algae. But what if your entire tank is covered in the stuff? Well then you need something to treat the entire tank. I've found that 2-4 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide for every 10 gallons of water works very very well. ***note this may not be safe for invertebrates like shrimp and snails****
To really make this effective you need time and flow. dose the 2-4 tablespoons per 10 gallons of water (i like the higher dose honestly), you can keep the tank lights on as they wil have no effect. now you need to wait.....for a while. The hydrogen peroxide needs some time to do its job; and some time is needed to ensure its made its way through the entire tank and has come into contact with all the algae. You want this stuff circulating through the tank for at least 15 minutes. Get some powerheads moving that water around as much as possible!
Then you're basically done. You may see the algae turning red....this is a good thing! It means the algae is dying (if not already dead). The algae can/will/might float around the tank now. Either way, you need to clean up the decaying algea and mess you've made so I suggest at least a 50% water change immediately after doing this.
Then the second part of the method is to dose something like Excel (liquid carbon promotes plant growth (for most species) and is an algaecide). Now algae can build a tolerance to excel so if you're not already dosing use the instructions on the bottle and dose something like 5ml per 10 gallons of water. If you're already dosing excel continue to do so at whatever rate you have been. NOTE: Excel and certain plants (like val species) dont play too well together!

Ex aquarium owner here. I add 5mm of Hydrogen Peroxide in my 200 liter tank every two weeks (2 weeks yes and two weeks no. Then 2 weeks yes again, repeating the cycle every two weeks, yes and nos). But, I don't simply throw the solution in the tank at once. I use a slow drip of a drop every minute till it's all finished. This way it will mix well and fish will not be subjected directly into a high dose, you know what fish are like, alway dart into what they think it's food and then take the undisolved solution straight into their mouth and gills, similar like you gulping down hot chilly powder, burning your mouth and throat, whereas in small amount you hardly get that burning feeling. Same with the fish. I also aim the drops straight above the algae affected plants. Some fish do swim into plants for protection or to seek shade from the strong LED lights but the Hydrogen Peroxide drops disperse around the plants and hardly cause any fish discomfort than when throwing the entire 5mm straight into the tank. The dropper is similar to the hospital grade dropper except it's only a plastic measuring cup (with measuring marking printed on the cup) used as a container with a small nipple at the bottom to fit a plastic or surgical tubing and a small regulating valve. A drop a minute is better than 5mm dropped within a second, yes? Usually, within half hour the cup will be empty. While doing this dripping, the filter canisters are usually switched off to stop them from sucking the Peroxide in and be absorbed by the activated carbon.

A quick google shows 2 tablespoons per 10 gallons = 3ml/gal. The typical youtube recommendation for BGA is 1-2ml/gal but what matters is results. Thanks Rich. I recently started battling BGA and just started with the peroxide followed with a dbl dose of Excel.

Its death on hair algae..but mosses are sensitive and so are some bunch plants. Bunches will recover..mosses probably not. But I find that in bright aquariums it's a very safe way to get things spiffy looking. Never bothers fish or shrimp or snails.

one thing to keep in mind when killing this much algae is now you have a huge amount of dead algae in the tank you will need a few BIG water changes before and after a cull this size lol

sorry i didnt see the comment earlier robert.....recommended dose is 2 to 4 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide for every 10 gallons of water. (err on the side of caution if you keep shrimp!)

I learned about H2O2 tank dosing fm MarksFiskTanks.com He demo'd that his tank treatment will not harm shrimp. I've already learned fish are fine. His instructions:
Turn off filters so bacteria in thrre will not completely die.
Dose: 1.5 ml per gsl. Mix your H2O2 measured with a little tank water in a cup... swish then add to tank.
Swish your tank so H2O2 mixes well.
Let it sit 1 hr. Timer will remind you to plug filters back in.
    Turn filters back on.
Do a water change and add new bacteria within the week.
    Trying it today. Stay tuned.

Filtering is something to help combat against algae growth and using this method without killing the beneficial bacteria which would in turn cause an ammonia and nitrite spike.

Some excellent information here but sadly I couldn’t finish watching, your erratic camera movements never stopped it was like being in a stunt aeroplane, it’s left me nauseous just like travel sickness..I suppose a lot of people can tolerate that but also a lot can’t , that’s a pity , to many people spray their camera around like a fly swat ..Not the way to make a video...Probably why you’ve got so many thumbs down 👎..What a pity .
