Jay Black is the BEST! Why put someone down if you don't even know him? Didn't your mother teach you that if you haven't got something nice to say, don't say it? I just saw Jay at his 70th birthday concert and believe me, he's still got it!
I'm so glad Kenny Vance added this song when he performs. His voice just blows a person away. More interviews please, speak about the the old days of Bklyn and make our hearts happy and young again.
America is where rock n roll started and Jay Black will always be remembered for his contribution and of course his amazing voice. I was a booking agent and met Jay while he was performing in Florida. What a great guy and very humble I might add.So enough of your SMUG comments. You couldn't hold a candle to Jay Black if you tried and you attempt to put him dowm. Go take a cold shower and look in the mirror and apologize for you idiotic comments.
Wow, I just picked up this clip yesterday and how I envy you. The Association were a huge and significant part of American 60's music and my musical journey to unfortunately nowhere, but that's another story. So many songs to choose from but my favorite I'd say remain "Everything That Touches You", especially the bass on that one..it's so alive. I'm honored even being able to write this to you.
On this day in 1965 {July 28th} Jay and the Americans performed "Cara, Mia" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!' One month earlier on June 5th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #4 & spent 13 weeks on the Top 100 The song was originally recorded in 1954 by David Whitfield; and on July 2nd, 1954 reached #1 {for 10 weeks} in the United Kingdom R.I.P. Jimmy O'Neill {Shindig's host, 1940 - 2013}, Mr. Whitfield {1925 - 1980}, & lead singer Jay Black turns 75 on Nov. 2nd
I would love to hear the rest of what Kenny has to say. I too have come to love hearing these old songs. It's amazing that "Jay" can still belt them out. His voice gives me good chills. I recently acquired sirius radio with a new vehicle the only channel I listen to is the 60's music, the best !!
bee wee 2020; Jay black is in his 80s he is in poor health and he is retired living in a retirement home I’m so sad I wanted to write him a letter but I can’t find them anywhere if anybody knows where I could write to him just a kind letter I would like to write please contact me I would appreciate it thank you so much.
I totally agree with awoosoul, I have been doing Jays songs for the past 40 years and nothing gets a response from our audiences like the songs we do of his! I have also met him and in factopened one Sunday night for them in 1973 at the Rhoda Arms in Newburgh, New York and he was a real pissor and fun guy too!
Met Kenny unexpectedly at a friend's home in Brooklyn about 15 years back. If I hadn't known who he was or that in chat he'd mentioned opening for or being on same bill as The Beatles (I'd say that's allowed to "mention"), I'd have taken him for just a friendly regular guy with a hilarious story to share about once being unwantingly diverted by a pilot in a small plane to pick up a "package" on one of those tours (I was taking flying lessons and so brought up that memory). A wonderful regular but very special guy from a group I've idolized since a music aware kid in the 60's and a meeting I'll value forever.
Yes! Jay still can sing as good as he did back in 60's. I am 75 and can remember when he first started singing. I have his records and I still love to see him sing!!! Keep on singing Jay with that God given talent you have!!
Why is it when we have some of our greatest artists peform some wannabe idiot decides he's going to put them down. Enough, those with the negative comments should give it up because they could never hold a candle to Jay Black.
The original Jay (Jay Traynor) is not an original member of the Tokens, but he does sing with the Tokens group fronted by the Tokens original lead singer, Jay Siegel (the Tokens also split into two groups, but for reasons of geography, not animosity).
I used to enjoy jay black (david blaine) in years past with jay and the americans. his later shows were vulgar with his language. However, is gambling debts and bankrupcy cost him the ownership of jay and the americans. Like I said he was a wonderful singer. I saw a lot of his concerts. Feel sorry for him.
these two had a spiff as whom was going to do the lead in cara mia not many people no this before it was published one of the first times they did this was at the LAURELS HOTEL IN MONTICELLO . and the were still trying to figure it out , and everyone loved the song , show was great I remember like yesterday by the way I was the stage manager at the time
I would REALLY love to hear the rest of this interview of Kenny. He seems like a nice even-keeled guy and I bet he would give the closest version of what happened with the group than you'd get from anywhere else.Does anyone have any idea where we can hear the rest of this interview?
Jay and the Americans sang Sunday and Me on a TV show. It was posted on Bedazzled but since removed. Does anybody have another video link? Does anybody know what performance was featured. Jay and The Americans told me it was Mike Douglas or Merv Griffin.
Jay never changes, despite getting older. He acts and pantomimes the same as always. He and Kenny were always the two big stars in the Americans. I disagree with Kenny, they were never "square" looking, very soulful Yiddish Rock & Roll stars for their era and beyond.
Regarding the post by “Cliff Works” claiming to have been part of The Association… couldn’t find a thing on him. Not listed among the “past members” of the group, and nothing on his individual name. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

Why isn't this guy in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame already? Can you believe he is not!
RIP, Jay Black!
For everything that has happened since the 60's, you can NOT argue with the voice. The music that they put out with Jay Black is unequaled
He still had it. ❤ love Kenny Vance and Jay Black.
I'm so glad Kenny Vance added this song when he performs. His voice just blows a person away. More interviews please, speak about the the old days of Bklyn and make our hearts happy and young again.

Kenny Vance is still got his pipes to. Jay Rocks !!
these guys are the greatest and still have the best voices

I never realized until I saw this interview by Kenny Vance that he was one of the members of Jay & the Americans. WOW!
Love these two guys! My absolute favorites!
Cool. I had the honor to play / sing in hit vocal group The Association in the 70's, it was a blast I'll treasure a lifetime.
I liked The Association. They often had two lead singers at the same time, which was unusual. "Never My Love" was one of my favorites by them.

Two crooners and legends of Rock and Roll!

Please finish this video. Really would like to know more. Wish I could hear the rest of Cara Mia in this video.
This really shows how unknowledgeable people are in music!!!
