Kevin "The Moves" McHale, poetry in motion.
Bite on the fake and it's the up and under. Don't bite and you get the fade away, hook, runner, or straight jumper in your face. Double team and he'll either split the defenders and go up and under, hit the step back, or run right into the help defender and go to the line, where he's a career 80% FT shooter (crazy for a big). Maybe convert a 3 pt play.
He was going to put himself in a position to get a high percentage shot, period. It was just a matter of if it went in or not. Your best bet is to deny him the basketball, because once he gets it down there it's over. But that's easier said than done with a 6'10" guy with that type of footwork and the wingspan of a pterodactyl. You can pretty much just lob it in there and he'll come away with it somehow.
One of the most unstoppable presences in league history. Criminally underrated.
Bro he scored on a double team that involve Kareem. Kareem is like 7'2. Damn
It's amazing to see another defender come over and have absolutely no effect on his ability to score. Shot over 60% from the field twice in his career.
Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Mc Hale are the 2 greatest post up players I've ever seen.
Agree with you bro!
We can add Tim Duncan to that list too.
Damn your on point.

Who’s here after Charles Barkley saying McHale is the hardest player he ever had to guard?
Ahahs jordan toast barkley every game
@@asdasdbinaltiapayansa24ora94 ah yeah, I forgot that power forwards usually defend shooting guards, your comment is not relevant
How did you read my mind dude? lol
When Barkley got into the league McHale gave him problems, but prime Barkley would get 30 and 20 on McHale. McHale made Barkley a better player.
@@powerboatguy2308 Of course prime Chuck could kill a '88-'93 McHale with broken feet, thanks to the criminal duo (Mahorn & Laimbeer) in the '87 ECF.
Too quick for centers then. Too tall and big for forwards. 80% free throw shooter too, so you couldn't just hack him.
Imagine him with Giannis's athleticism, (leg) length, and playmaking.
He'd be a good center in today's game. He can actually defend.
Sir Kevin McHale, Lord of Scotland
@@jfrd-pw4hk Against the Lakers, McHale would usually defend Worthy and Bird would guard Rambis, Green, etc.
Lmao and to think people today act like these “old” guys couldn’t ball kev would smoke 90% of pfs today

I love his response to how he’d match up to today’s players: “With today’s rules, we’d lose by 100 points. By rules in my day, they’d be in the tunnel crying to their mothers.” (Paraphrase here). Truth is you just dont’ know. Game was more physical then, more precision, athletic now.

The true representative of low post skill master...
Mchales post game + Birds shooting = Nikola Jokic
@@briggsoakley Only player in history with a post game comparable to McHale's was the Dream. No one else comes close. Certainly not Jokic.
@@carlosmoran1366 you’re either a troll or you simply don’t watch enough of jokic’s game. Man has no athleticism and relies entirely on his craftiness, especially in the post.
@@briggsoakley I'm sure you're a Jokic fan, and that's ok, but saying that his post game is comparable to McHale's can only mean you never saw McHale.
Jokic is already the most complete seven footer of all time, but his post game doesn't match McHale's, yet. That could change over the next years, of course.
Incredible moves, 6-foot-10, 8-foot wingspan and teammates who were excellent passers. Nightmare matchup.
In the 1986 Celtics parade I was on the parade route and Kevin was reaching down and giving hand touches and fives to the crowd and I touched him with my left hand. It was a thrill to be that close to a legend.
I can imagine that, really a great moment
@@zhugelianges thanks
Every season Kevin would add another low post move to his arsenal. The turn around fall-away was his bread and butter. Sadly foot injuries derailed his career.
Also I love how you can see Bird begin to drift down-court after passing the ball to McHale.
Sadly I couldn't watch Kevin's games on live.....from the games I watched, he's definitely one of the best on the best
Well, Larry didn't call Kevin "the black hole" for nothing. He knew McHale would finish or get fouled.
When McHale got you in the "torcher chamber", you had no chance.

The man of a million moves
Kevin defined what it means to be a powerful forward! To set a tone.
He has best feet work I have every seen because of 1 fact. Kevin wasn't athletic and had no vertical. He relied on skill only and he mastered his craft. "Big game" James Worthy is 1b.
Different style with him because he used raw speed and athleticism that made him almost unstoppable.
Hakeem olajuwon only 6-10 combo forward center his moves we effortless on the block. The called him dreamshake for a reason.
As kid used to watch Kevin and the rest and practiced their moves and became a beast on the low post at neighborhood park.
Thanks for your contribution and when the game was played by men.
Actually, Kevin had a decent vertical before he fractured his foot.
Great post player, he taught Kevin Garnett everything he knows about the post
True story. They remain close til this day.
My favorite Garnett move, that fade away BANK shot from impossible angle and right off the very top left corner of the glass. The touch that required. I could never get that touch on bank shots that high on the board.
My favorite Kevin move, the up and under finger rolls. Kevin had the softest touch I've ever seen on a big post player. finger rolls like point guards. Rarely missed layups even getting fouled or bumped or pushed.
@@ovp66223
yup💯
also his JUMP HOOK was authomatic and the 10-15 foot Jumpers.
i like also his UP and UNDER JUMP HOOKS and the twisting like REVERSE FINGER ROLLS😂
I ain't gonna lie he doesn't get enough credit. Arguably the best low post player that played the game.

The NBA is now a 3-shot or lob for a dunk league. No real HARD driving to the rim, and NO ONE had the moves Kevin had. Then or today. Especially today. If it's not an open dunk, pass it bac k to the guys at the 3 point line...... really not much fun to watch.

True
That turnaround fadeaway is filthy.
This is a great study. I played C/PF in high school even though I’m only 6’4”. It’s been a great foundation for my “old man game” since I’m now 37. One thing I noticed is that Kevin had NO left hand. My left hand is also under developed so it’s good to know I can still be beastly
Good that you learn from Kevin McHale.
He is definitely the pioneer of the post moves, before Hakeem Olajuwon.
Kevin McHale up and under post move was so effective. He had long arms as well; he was able to get his shot off over defenders. His footwork was impressive as well
Definitely a great low post player. Great video. Also, thanks for the support, bro
You're welcome, bro
People talk about who is the greatest power forward ever. Some say Karl Malone, Tim Duncan, etc., but as far as which player had MANY moves on the low post and was basically unstoppable, it was Kevin McHale. Duncan, Malone and other were great, but no one could match McHale's assortment of moves (and also a very good shooter) the way #32 could perform. The ONLY reason why McHale didn't average 25+ PPG is because it was Larry Bird's team. Don't get me wrong, Bird and McHale were great together (with Parish), but if McHale played for a team where HE was the main focal point, he would have EASILY averaged 25 PPG over his career. Unstoppable.
He had you guessing everytime he caught the ball in the low post
A true master
Kevin McHale is one of the most underrated players ever. The definition of finesse over athleticism and skill over power. Every night he went out there to post up against guys who where taller, bigger, stronger, more athletic or all of the above, than him, and most of the times he got the better of them. Can only imagine the punishment he must've taken each and every game. Most likely the reason why he looks so physically broken down to this day.
Mad respect.
He was the most unstoppable power forward of all - time. Period.
@@zhugelianges in the low post, yeah, he sure was. Generally speaking, Dirk was more unstoppable. And if Giannis adds a decent mid-range shot then this conversation is over.
How about Malone? What do you think of him? I’m just curious
@@zhugelianges very good player for his time, super efficient but kind of limited in what he was able to do offensively. To me the knock on him is that his abilities wouldn't translate to all eras, particularly this one. Also, Malone was market corrected by Kevin Garnett, and right now we're watching Kevin Garnett being market corrected by Giannis. To me, the upper echelon of truly great players never get market corrected. Kareem, Russell, Barry, Magic, Bird, McHale, Jordan, Isiah, Dream, Shaq, Dirk, LeBron, Durant, Curry, Luka, those guys will never be repeated. I don't feel the same way about Malone.
He was also really more athletic than he gets credit for...because for a big guy.....he could run the floor well, and also get vertically high and block & slap down shots like a skinny version of Wilt Chamberlain. But his footwork and wide range of moves made him unguardable. He would split the double-team, and even easily defeat triple team coverage with his impossible endless range of arm movements, fakes, footwork, change of directions, change of angles, underneath moves, fades, multi-directional hooks, and body contortions. Once McHale got the ball in the low post, it was an automatic 2-pts, and maybe 3-pts. There was just no way to approach the task of defending him. And...he also had a solid jump shot as well. Put him on another good Team, without the hype & mystic of Larry Bird sucking all the media attention away from his efforts & originality, and Kevin McHale would have won the League MVP a couple of times.
Same darn up and under move. You would think the defense would know it was coming, but he fooled ‘em every time.
If you looked at Mchale's low post moves, he had about 12 different variations..my favorite were the 12 ft fall away from either side of the basket either direction left or right.. rarely if ever missed..there were times McHale was nearly unstoppable
That fadeaway against Kareem was epic...Kareem's head was hanging down low like damn I just got my ass handed to me. Torture chamber indeed! McHale and Dream would smoke any of these 3 point "post" men today.
McHale finished 4th in MVP voting in 87 behind Magic, Jordan and Bird think about that
26.1ppg, 9.9rbs, 2.6ast, 0.5stl, 2.2blks, 60.4%-Fg, 65.5-Ts%
McHale knew what move he was going to do running down the court before even getting the ball.
He has very high basketball IQ which I really admire
The best ever in the post. What made McHale's up-and-under/stepthrough nearly impossible to stop was that he also had a great fadeaway over his right shoulder and an unstoppable jump hook going left. If you stood your ground, he just shot over you; if you went for the shot, he'd counter. He's still the only player in NBA history to make 60% FG, 80% FT, and average at least 20 in a season.
You woefully sold McHale short: he could hit the turnaround fadeaway from either side either direction..the up and under reverse, the little up fake, draw the defender, draw the foul, little half hook, never missed..he was very athletic, had quick feet, the best lockdown defender, over 60% shooting, and at times virtually unstoppable..he would kill you down low.. wasn't a player who had a chance against him
@@mitchelll3879 I think we're saying the same thing lol
Agree that McHale was an excellent defender: he used to guard Worthy, 'Nique and the other crazy athletic SFs so the Celtics could hide Bird on the other team's PF.
To your list I would add that McHale was also one of the wittiest basketball players - his interviews are some of the best in NBA history.
The only thing that McHale couldn't really do that well was pass (not that he needed to, since he was a near-automatic basket)!
@@dl3988 he was called The Black Hole ever after he passed it back to Bird or Dennis and they cussed him out. “Dammit, when I give you the ball, you score!”
That half spin to finger roll is pretty cool.

8 ft wingspan bah gawd
Yah, no one mentions that about him! That was a pretty significant physical gift that he took full advantage of.
used to play with my a buddy that a good 8 inches taller than me. I was a decent shooter, and had no luck inside until I learned a few of these moves from mchale. Going underhand underneath his arm in post was a game changer.
Imagine if Ben simmons or Giannis actually studied and trained post moves like this. Not saying McHale level but this is what non shooters need to be practicing.
post moves are for some reason physical and elegant at the same time
In the way day...I had only four moves. But...like Herman Munster...We did them VERY well. Plus...I worked on my free throws. I was shooting 85%. They hammered me. But I made them pay. Remember 3 to make 2. Yup...old...old timey. Never made it out of college. Tall...but only 230 pounds. Great times. Great memories.
Nothing beats the old days
Now all we see is 3 pt shooting bigs/forwards. Kinda miss that grit and action in the low post brah
This makes me think that mj took his footwork from kevin mchale
He did lol
No question. The 2nd 3peat MJ and especially the Wizards version copied his footwork and fundamentals. But the player he emulated the most, especially early in his career, was David (Skywalker) Thompson.
Bird too. It looks like Jordan mimicked Birds lean forward jumper and turnaround jumper
I think Hakeem did too
@@lainiwakura4678 Dr J as well.
New found respect for kevin McHale
You should lol
@@zhugelianges and why should I?
Lost art in my humble opinion. People forgot that he was one of those guys that once inside is automatic 2 points. For 12 years straight, he was a 54% to 60% FG shooter and was still 52% in his 13th and final year. Saw an 80s articles were one player was just awed by the amount of unique moves, Kevin was getting walled off by really strong guys and even elbowed on the gut and yet he would just spin and with his graceful/smooth release or fadeaway is an auto score. He was so good at faking that many Cs and PFs don't even bother trying to block him anymore, they just stand up and raise their hands hoping he'll miss. This guy has ruined the image of so many so-called great defenders, they even tell their coaches (more like beg tbh) to have other teammates become the dedicated defender as he really makes them look bad and inept, and many would be surprised that Kareem was one of them wanting to guard Parish instead. Another thing that is not mentioned nowadays are the big men that copied his style and plethora of moves and used it consistently not only became really good scorers but durable as well (as he really doesn't jump a lot and injuring his ankles). Olajuwon's dream shake is talk about a lot but anyone back then knows, he was getting schooled by McHale in the first years of their matchups, and was only in the late 80s and early 90s where The Dream started employing more shakes into his offense, as he used to be a Wilt type of scorer. Chris Webber, Patrick Ewing, and David Robinson are other good post scorers that comes to mind that incorporated some of his fakes but didn't really went all out like Hakeem.
Such a great take. I’ve been watching a lot of 1980s games (thanks, lockdown!) and I totally agree. I think he suffers from not having a traditionally athletic look about him-he’s a bit goofy looking which makes him seem clumsy, but he’s actually incredibly sly and skillful on the court. We can only imagine what would have happened if he didn’t play on that broken foot, but I respect that he went big.
Thing of beauty watching him in the post.
Loved watching McHale’s post moves- pivoting and faking the defenders out before scoring.
Imagine having that guy as your second or third option. Crazy skill.

The Big Fundamental before the Big Fundamental
lol bro you are humorous
Only joker has footwork like this
Very true, bro
McHale was listed at 6'10". But unlike anyone else who I've ever seen play, he had ridiculously really high shoulders (or a non-existent neck. take your pick). If he had a normal neck length relative to the proportions of rest of his body, he'd have been at least 7'1". That coupled with his 8' wingspan puts him at roughly the same reach of a 7'3" player with a 7'8" wingspan (Boban Marjonovic). His physique coupled with the high release on his shots easily made his jump shots more unblockable than KD's.
It's a damn shame that he played on a fractured ankle (because that's what "tough" guys were expected to do) that wound up permanently diminishing his mobility. You have to admire Bird and McHale for going all-out, but it really sucks that doing so resulted in injuries that cut short their careers. They could have easily had 3 or 4 more prime years a piece if the NBA had today's sports science and doctors constantly monitoring their bodies and protecting them from themselves.
That non existent neck part killed me lmao, but yea it sucks that because of the "tough guy" stereotype, playing on the injury kinda ruined mchale. I bet kevin still doesnt feel to great about that to this day
