Controlling Chauvet COLORstrip Mini with Obey 4

- This video discusses how you can control your Chauvet ColorStrip Mini LED light fixture with the Obey 4 DMX controller. The Obey 4 is not really meant to be used with the ColorStrip Mini and the preset buttons do not behave consistently (apart from the Blackout button, which seems to work). However, you can use the four sliders to control your Colorstrip Mini fixtures using DMX instructions on the four channels, as described on p. 13 of the Colorstrip Mini manual.
A PDF of my DMX overlays for the Obey 4 is available for download at bit.ly/3I456EY Print, cut, and figure out optimal placement by testing with your sliders before taping them down. Please let me know if you have any additional tips, suggestions, questions, etc.
NOTE: I am not affiliated with Chauvet in any way.
Thanks for this video.I just got my Obey 4 today and used your download to reference fader position. Hooked up my Colorstrip mini and it worked as you posted. I was trying to use them with my Obey 40 and couldn’t get them to work. Thanks again
So glad this is still helpful all these years later! Thanks for the comment!
Straight forward and to the point. Thank you for doing this.
You're very welcome--glad you found it helpful.

thank you! can't stand working with the IR Remote that keeps breaking + the battery dying
Very helpful. So basically the Obey 3 is 80% useless for controlling the colorstrip. The preset color buttons don’t work, and with only 3 sliders, one being taken up to send the channel number there’s no way to mix in blue, what a shame.
Hi guys, what is the set for back of colorstrip???Where should I put it so that it works with the console?
Hi, I so much like this video and the way u explain it, please I have a question, I have the ADJ colorstrip, ADJ mega par profile plus and the kinta FX, I want to know if I can control all of them with an obey 4 individually so they can do different effects for me. Please i need help......
+David Ama Hi, David,I'm glad you liked the video and found it helpful. I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with those other units you mentioned, but it seems to me they should work similarly. Those units should have a similar DMX chart saying what happens when they receive DMX signals on each channel. The sliders will send those signals as numerical values, even though there's no readout (see my label). No idea whether the preset buttons will work.
Can you control Chaucer Colorpalette & mini strip with this controller? Thanks! Appreciate your help. Jesse.
Hi. I have a colorstrip (not mini) I bought the obey 4 thinking I could have easy presets. Why in the world does this feature not work? Chauvet support never returns my emails... am I doing something wrong?
I understand the frustration about the presets. I was disappointed too. At the time I called Chauvet's customer service and they explained that the Obey 4 simply wasn't designed to work with this light fixture (or the other way around). Ultimately decided to keep the controller though, as it was relatively inexpensive and I figured out how to use it manually with the method in this video.
@@jszack Exact same issue as the person above. Would you happen to know what controller they recommend for the Chauvet COLORstrip? Or what light fixtures are meant for the obey 4?
Aidan Hochstetler don’t really know but it seems like the obey4 was designed for older PAR lights or something. Unfortunately I haven’t tried other Chauvet controllers so I can’t really say. I did get them to work with ADJ software at one point.
very difficult
Same, incredibly disappointing
How do you actually turn the unit on ? We have a light switch at the gym and due to Covid no one can get the lights on after the switch is on. Thanks
The unit switches on with a switch in the back. Then you have to press #1 in the Fixtures area on the top left. Then it will send out the DMX signals as described via the sliders.
hey where you able to figure out anything for me in regards to the question I asked yesterday?
What do you set the color strip to? What mode? ace or system?
I have them set on SYS.
@@jszack Thank you!
Thanks for the vid. Do you run them both on the same DMX channel or? Can you still get the runway effects like in sound-active where the two bars get treated like one longer one with patterns starting on one bar and continue through to the other, like runway lights?
Yes, if all the lights are set to the same ID they will all do the same thing on one “fixture” button if linked together or otherwise receiving from the obey4 (I have a wireless transmitter on the obey4 and receivers on two light strips.
so low on volume ewwwwww
Will this unit also work for moving head lights ?
Sorry, I haven’t had a chance to try those. But if they are controlled by 4 DMX channels you should be able to send some commands on those channels.
