    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Patch (Robin Williams) gives a speech to the Medical Board saying that doctors should not only fight death, they should fight indifference.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
The fact-based story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter, based on his own book and mixing equal doses of scatological humor and pathos. Robin Williams stars as Hunter Adams, a troubled young man who commits himself to a mental institution in the late 1960s. His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff is grateful for the levity Adams provides, his methods alienate his uptight roommate Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as well as the staff and faculty of his school. Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Carin (Monica Potter). Tragedy strikes, and Adams' career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch Adams (1998) was produced by former M*A*S*H (1972-83) star Mike Farrell, who met the real-life Adams when the offbeat doctor served as an advisor to the actor's popular TV series.

"a doctor's mission is not just to prevent death but to improve the quality of life. That's why you treat a disease you may win or you may lose but you treat a person I guarantee you will win every time no matter what the outcome" - What a beautiful beautiful masterpiece! This is so true. Many doctors have a lot of "head white" mentality type who think they are gods or superhuman. Doctors are meant to uphold the Hippocratic oath but unfortunately money talks and most people just go for the money and put moral principles below them.

The concept of transference is not without reason. And that reason is simply bandwidth. The average person does not have the emotional bandwidth to care to that level about so many people. Consider a doctor in a hospital overseeing the care of 30 people per month. Let's say 1 in 30 of those patients die. If you knew every one of those patients on a deep personal and emotional level, that means you are mourning the loss of a friend every month. That will take its toll on you. It's not sustainable. You have an emotional breakdown. And how are you supposed to provide care for others if you're constantly in a state of mourning.
Yes you should care for people and be kind to them. But as a doctor your job is not to become their friend, it's to get them well enough so they can leave and go back to their life.

I’ve been through many trainings and we are told time and time again to not become attached to the people we serve , I’ve been told many times that they are not our friends and we must maintain professionalism at all times , but these same “instructor’s “ have never spent countless hours day in and day out with these individuals, they haven’t held there hands as they faced there fears , or been the only one who calms them down and provide them with that safe feeling they need , haven’t taken walks in the park and seen there eyes light up and excitement in there face to see flowers or wildlife , haven’t been on adventures , I understand the concept of professionalism and distance but as a human you will form a bond of some sort with them and grow attached , and I’ve learned to just like he says , if you treat them as a person and with dignity and respect then everyone wins but if you treat them like they are just another “special needs condition “ or your paycheck , then no one wins and you miss out on an opportunity to create something beautiful in both of your lives and you can still do that while being professional and have that boundary ( I hope that makes sense ) ❤️ life is a beautiful thing

This is the best speech in modern film and cinema, I have ever heard. Thank you Robin Williams. Al Pacino's final speech in Scent of a Woman, and Mel Gibson in Braveheart, would be second and third. I often watch this speech 1-15 times/ year, every year. Thank you Robin Williams. Thank you for your talent, empathy, compassion and understanding for others. You truly did fit this role. Patch Adams was truly the man you were on and off the screen. No one will ever forget you, Robin. Your words and your films, will always live on. From Alberta, Canada-Thank you.

If a doctor can be defined as someone who helps those in need, those who may need something so simple as a kind smile and a warm hand, without indifference and coldness, then, Robin Williams must be the best doctor I've had the luck to see

It's fitting Robin Williams played a doctor many times because it came natural for him. In reality, doctors have a lot of empathy. Truly, the greatest comedian who ever lived. He was a very humble and kind person who I miss a lot. Our world is a little darker and more cynical without him. He seemed like he was never too busy to say hello or sign an autograph for a fan. I will always love and adore him.

i think that i had possibly met mr. robin williams at least a couple, or a few times in person, & whereas he himself had never personally acknowledge me, & you know like say, or how you say like as if i were to 'invisible-man', or someone of that nature, & whereas i can't remember as to whether, or not i was homeless at the time of having met him, now either he himself was going through some, or such of a personal life crisis of his own then, & there, or he himself had deliberately upon purpose chose to just ignore me when he himself was in the midwest of the u.s.a., or unless male person being of whom i had met back then was just a look-a-like of his, &, but then they say that everybody supposedly has a twin somewhere in the world

I watch this whenever I question why I entered healthcare and it always helps me. We treat people, corporations try to change us. Eventually at the end of our lives we will be in those beds. That’s what you should think every time you touch a patient. People require care and help.
