Hey there! Fellow eyecare provider here and I wanted to share my thoughts on this video. I think it's a little unfair or misleading to discuss the common SE of Alphagan-P (as you state in the video, allergies, lid swelling, and redness are reported as frequently as 25% of the time with Alphagan) when you're talking about potential SE of Lumify. I have no doubt that Naphcon-A and Visine would also have much more obvious/serious/frequent side effects at 10x their concentration too. I also feel like the answer to the question "Which eye drop is best for getting rid of red eyes?" wasn't really given, even though in the eyecare community the answer is a very resounding LUMIFY. It has lower rates of rebound redness, lower rates of tachyphylaxis, and lower risk of angle closure/pharmacologic dilation. I 100% agree that anti-redness drops should be used sparingly, and the root cause of the red eye should be determined and treated. However, I think this video missed an opportunity to really emphasize how much better of an option Lumify is compared to Visine or Naphcon-A.
Tx doc . . . very good discussion and thank you for covering the science/not overly layman terms directed. Lumify is not at all allowed in Canada yet...who knows. Our Health Canada really protects its citizens well in regards to a lot of ingredients and new products. I don't see us allowing border open before the winter or spring of 2022 so can't just drive down to town on other side of border.
Hi Dr Rupa, Very useful info. After a long period of tribulation, cases have started declining in Pune and elsewhere in India. Unfortunately, my vaccination day still hasn't come. There is a huge waiting line. Please stay safe and give my respects to Dr Wong's parents and ur beloved parents and my love to the little ones
So much great info! Thanks ❤️ Do you have any info on OTC eye drops to combat the symptoms of seasonal allergies in your eyes? I tend to use the allergy drops more often and would love to know more about it.
This was great information, I've suffered with allergic conjunctivitis for about 7 years now. Still no closer to finding out what causes the allergy. Anyway.. I found naphcon A in America (I'm from uk) in 2019 and omg life changer. Like you said I don't use often only when a flare up is super bad or if I'm due to go out. Its reassuring to hear your advise as I don't seem to have any of the side effects so I'm hoping I am using them correctly. I have never heard of lumify, so I will try those next time in able to get to the USA, especially if its a watered down version. Thank you so much for this information. 💗
Hi Dr., I had lasik 2 yrs ago and now have chronic dry eyes which cause daily redness. I am already on restasis and use retaine mgd drops daily. I am very self conscious about my red eyes. I want to use lumify everyday 😫 but I was told by my Dr. I shouldn't. I've been researching and read that there is a preservative free lumify drop that can be used daily. Can you speak on that?
I live in Hawaii and mango season makes my allergic eyes terrible! Make sure to wear protective glasses when doing woodwork. I've seen a ton of injuries from that (I love woodworking too!)
@@DrRupaWong I wear glasses, thank you. Have you lived in Hawaii all of your life? I ask because the climate is different here in US and I was wondering if Hawaii have less of an impact on certain allergies vs NY?
So what can we do once our eyes are addicted to eye drops? I've tried to let them go but my eyes are always super red if I don't use them. I have no idea what to do
I use screen a lot and it had glare. Due to that I developed computer vision syndrome. Now, have been to 4 drs. They say your eyes are totally fine but the issue is computer. My eyes are like yellow and the outer part of eyes are red due to dilated vains. The dr gave me systane drops for dryness and ofvin to cater any bacterial infection. Now, still my eyes are read and it creates a huge problem for me. Sone times my one eye irritates me and sone times the other one. What should I do about this redness 😭. These drs will be experinenting by changing drops and playing with eyes of patients.
Hi Doc, I have had eye pain and redness for 4 months, I have been to various opthalmologists and have been given different eye drops and what you're explaining seems to be the confusion I am facing. I have now settled with Ocurest-AH and anti-inflammatory to relieve pain, anything I should watch out for?
There are so many causes for chronic red eyes - ocular rosacea, meibomitis, allergic conjunctivitis and the treatment varies depending upon the cause. Check with your ophthalmologist to do a full assessment. There are even cornea specialists who focus on dry eyes and dry eye treatments. I did do a video on dry eye treatments here: ruclips.net/video/ZClksj8sLdk/видео.html
Hi...just to share as I live in Canada and have access to outstanding specialists incl. for my eyes, that I have 'conjunctival injection plus MGD - meibomian gland disorder' and zero diseases or detectable inflammation in my body that may be cause of the con. inj. . I wanted to share that I learned a lot about this chronic never goes away redness and it is believed that this can happen/show up as one gets older due to traumas from head injuries etc in younger years as well as 'conjunctivitis'. Especially one obtained in a foreign tropical country where I had to be hospitalized to deal with due to being on my own. I get my eyes continually checked and there is zero eye sight issues or deterioration nor disease, just permanent redness and one must continually tell pple "no I am not tired" etc. Hope that helps and hope you can get access to a specialist. You may want t g back over your history and ask family members older than you if you do not have any recollection of any head traumas, even having a big fall from a bicycle or skiing and falls from horses. Good luck.
What’s the issue with eyes being too dilated? I was told by my optometrist that my pupils are just really large so was wondering if there are any risks to large pupils?
Usually no risk at all. Many individuals with blue eyes have larger pupils. It can just make you more light sensitive. Blue eyed individuals, in general, are at increased risk for macular degeneration, so everyone should always wear sunglasses when outdoors!
What about drops for allergies? My eyes itch like crazy during this season... I don't really care about the redness I just don't want them to itch 😭 the ones my doctor recommended don't really work
There can be so many causes for red eyes - exposure keratitis, allergic conjunctivitis, dry eyes, etc. Get evaluated by an ophthalmologist to asses the reason.
I try not to use Lumify daily but some weeks I have used it consecutively… maybe 5 days or so… and no side effects. One drop and my redness is cleared all day.
Hi there I am 33 years old. I have been fighting red eyes now for 8 years . All the Dr. Told me there’s nothing wrong I just have red eyes. I don’t believe that so I started to look into it. Agree, Lumify is the safest, however, the BAK preservative is a concern as well. I wish they would make it in single dose vials.
Could you do a video on good contact lens practices and one on blue eye issues like like sensitivity, etc? Thanks for the helpful videos :)

Allergies cause red eyes, and taking zyrtec D usually clears them and not taking any eye drops.
