You love to hate him and hate to love him at the same time but as you watch his journey and learn what his story could've been from the What Ifs... You start to admire a regular man doing his best even if he sinks low and is desperately trying to become a better person. Like someone who is naturally kind no matter what and no matter which timeline they are in... Such as sweet Emilia. He's doing it for himself and her and everyone he loves. Such an amazing story just in season 1 and season 2 and beyond only gets better

He breaks a little down during the mansion arc, but it rarely lasts for more than one loop. The biggest impact he had was during the time he shut himself away from everyone and stayed in Beatrice's library, but that was more due to his fear of dying than actual mental stress. This arc though, no matter what Subaru does, he fails over and over and over, and never makes any real progress. Which is why this arc destroys him so much and also why he's overconfident at the beginning of it.

Honestly, here is how I think of Subaru. Why does everyone assume that the “Main character” has to be a good, righteous person? They are called the “Main Character” Not the “Main Good Character”. Even the word “protagonist” if you search it up is defined as the LEADING role in a play, of work of literature. In other words, the leading role does not have to BE a good guy. The reason why we all feel “iffy” about Subaru is that he is a realistic character. First, not every human when Isekaied is gonna get a “harem” or is going to be way too OP. Also, his character is realistic. He doesn’t have to be a perfect good guy. We have all done something that if we were viewed as the main character to other people, would consider us a villain. How much more Subaru? He is annoying. he is prideful. That’s the point. You are supposed to be angry with him because it is a quality we all know to be foolish. But you are also supposed to cheer him on once he realizes his mistakes and turns for the better. it’s time we stop expecting a super perfect, can-do-no-wrong main character and expect one that is a scumbag but goes from zero to hero. Heck, it could even be the other way around. A main character that is good but finds himself entering the darkness. That story line would help audiences to figure out when to realize that they are going down the dark side so depending on how well and realistically accurate it is written, it can be a helpful storyline for the audience. Either way, we can all agree Subaru changed for the better and even though he is still weak, I have researched from the manga/light novel that he does improve himself(gets more fighting techniques) even though it is a slow improvement, which again, is ALSO realistic. he doesn’t grasp things and isn’t a protégé like other anime characters. He learns like every other average human being does. Eh well, again this is an opinion, with which I back up with some logical sense. Re:Zero is one of those Isekai gems that really try to fulfill the potential behind that genre. People have been talking about how the annoying Isekai cliches are just cash grabs and aren’t actually good stories which is true. I feel like this Isekai business if used properly, one can produce amazing gems and live up its full potential. Re:zero is one of them. The cliches if any are almost always used properly and the story is not predictable. You will never be able to predict it. It’s like one piece and attack on titan, where the more you go, the more questions you have. It’s good cause it keeps you engaged in the story, wanting to find out more about it. There is philosophical debates, and really intriguing, unique and understandable characters.
In the beginning when Emilia told Subaru that she was Satella, it was because she was hoping he would be afraid and run off and leave her. Subaru was slowing Emilia down in her search for the insignia. He was a burden to her because he didn't even know anything about the city he was in, not even the name. He also didn't know his way around to even start looking for her insignia and Subaru couldn't even read the language so wouldn't be able to follow directions. She stuck with him trying to be kind to him all along the way and even felt bad for lying to him later on, promising to apologize later if things worked out... Emilia is such a kind person that she just couldn't tell him to "Get lost, you're in the way." She tried to scare him off with the one thing that had always worked with everyone, but Subaru didn't even know who the witch was let alone that Emilia looked a lot like her, so she got embarrassed with how kind and understanding Subaru was being... Also, she thought he was a really dumb and helpless 12 year old that she needed to help, not knowing he was actually about to turn 18... Edit: Also need to know that Emilia may be 14 in appearance but she is mentally closer to 7 and she is physically far older......
The charm of this anime is that you start to see it with very low expectations, because it seems the typical generic isekai, but each episode you watch is more intriguing than the previous one, and surprise is a work of art, this anime is totally different from what you thought, this anime is simply spectacular and unique because it plays with your expectations, and exceeds them in all aspects.

This episode clarifies why she said her name was Satella so she wouldn't bother him by scaring him away. Also why she said it might trouble him if she accompanied him to the village. She's lived with this discrimination since she was born

Albert Wesker it’s not pride if you want to know what it is it’ll say below Subaru’s Return by Death is a power granted to him by Satella through a contract similar to what Emilia and Puck have though we don’t know how Subaru has this contract yet, and Since Satella only has the Authorities of Envy and Sloth the possibility of it being pride is debunked, and since through that contract Subaru was able to see the unseen hand despite not having The Sloth Gene shows the contract gives him access to at least some part of Satella’s Authorities, so Return by Death can be pretty confidently said to be some part of the Authority of Envy

In regards to Subaru being stuck in despair, the author releases side stories on his birthday every year. The beginning lude house scene he gets stuck dying 100+times and falling into despair all because he never accepts humility and asks for help from Reinhardt in the alleyway. So basically he only made it thru that from throwing away his pride and accepting humility.

Dang. You accurately described all of Subaru's faults in the episode "Self-Proclaimed Knight." For real. Except Emilia felt indebted to Subaru, but Subaru feels that she should express that gratitude for things she couldn't possibly be aware of and let him be bigger than he actually is. Not to mention in her eyes, this is a Subaru that knew everything and did everything right, one who never experienced the same kind of pain he's actually been feeling through his failed routes and the frustrating thing is that Subaru isn't able to tell her how, yet that shouldn't make him be entitled to things above himself. Hard to explain but that's basically it.
You have been told about the creature in passing, Whilhelm told Subaru first time he left for Emilia that he needs to take a detour because on the shortest path there have been sightings of the White Whale, but this time Subaru took the fastest route so he can reach the manor faster before the Witch Cultists, and ... well, they ran into the White Whale.
Subaru was feeling himself after helping with the maebeasts in the village and how “heroic” he was and so it lead to him being more cocky and less critical of the different situations
The thing is, when Subaru tells a person about the future i.e his/her death like what you said "I saw you die" the witch stops time and crushes the person's heart who heard about the future therefore killing the person.
Dark isn’t even the word for this anime and I love it. I feel like suburu is what yu are when you don’t have main character plot armor but still trying to do main quests lol except he can come back. I can’t wait for season 2 😁
I’m assuming he can only talk about the future if it’s info that can be found in another way. Or if it’ll just confuse the other person. Like how he could’ve found out the exact time and place the witch cultists attacked if he were part of their group. But saying someone will die when they go somewhere, you can’t know that unless you’ve seen it from the future.

Well, there are several interpretations for that, even Subaru tells us why he believe she told him that, something like "to look like crazy and so that she didn't have to take responsability for anything", and that was exactly what he was trying to apply in episode 15. Of course, that doesn't mean what he thought was correct, but it is interesting to bring that up now.

Re:Zero is one of those Isekai gems that really try to fulfill the potential behind that genre. People have been talking about how the annoying Isekai cliches are just cash grabs and aren’t actually good stories which is true. I feel like this Isekai business if used properly, one can produce amazing gems and live up its full potential. Re:zero is one of them. The cliches if any are almost always used properly and the story is not predictable. You will never be able to predict it. It’s like one piece and attack on titan, where the more you go, the more questions you have. It’s good cause it keeps you engaged in the story, wanting to find out more about it. There is philosophical debates, and really intriguing, unique and understandable characters.
I can say wit my whole chest that no protagonist has gone through the same pain as subaru

In the beginning when Emilia told Subaru that she was Satella, it was because she was hoping he would be afraid and run off and leave her. Subaru was slowing Emilia down in her search for the insignia. He was a burden to her because he didn't even know anything about the city he was in, not even the name. He also didn't know his way around to even start looking for her insignia and Subaru couldn't even read the language so wouldn't be able to follow directions. She stuck with him trying to be kind to him all along the way and even felt bad for lying to him later on, promising to apologize later if things worked out... Emilia is such a kind person that she just couldn't tell him to "Get lost, you're in the way." She tried to scare him off with the one thing that had always worked with everyone, but Subaru didn't even know who the witch was let alone that Emilia looked a lot like her, so she got embarrassed with how kind and understanding Subaru was being... Also, she thought he was a really dumb and helpless 12 year old that she needed to help, not knowing he was actually about to turn 18...
Edit: Also need to know that Emilia may be 14 in appearance but she is mentally closer to 7 and she is physically far older......

The charm of this anime is that you start to see it with very low expectations, because it seems the typical generic isekai, but each episode you watch is more intriguing than the previous one, and surprise is a work of art, this anime is totally different from what you thought, this anime is simply spectacular and unique because it plays with your expectations, and exceeds them in all aspects.
Subaru is deeply flawed, if he wasn't this whole show would fall apart.

Subaru’s Return by Death is a power granted to him by Satella through a contract similar to what Emilia and Puck have though we don’t know how Subaru has this contract yet, and Since Satella only has the Authorities of Envy and Sloth the possibility of it being pride is debunked, and since through that contract Subaru was able to see the unseen hand despite not having The Sloth Gene shows the contract gives him access to at least some part of Satella’s Authorities, so Return by Death can be pretty confidently said to be some part of the Authority of Envy
It also kills the person he intends to tell i.e Emilia

In regards to Subaru being stuck in despair, the author releases side stories on his birthday every year. The beginning lude house scene he gets stuck dying 100+times and falling into despair all because he never accepts humility and asks for help from Reinhardt in the alleyway. So basically he only made it thru that from throwing away his pride and accepting humility.

Dang. You accurately described all of Subaru's faults in the episode "Self-Proclaimed Knight." For real. Except Emilia felt indebted to Subaru, but Subaru feels that she should express that gratitude for things she couldn't possibly be aware of and let him be bigger than he actually is. Not to mention in her eyes, this is a Subaru that knew everything and did everything right, one who never experienced the same kind of pain he's actually been feeling through his failed routes and the frustrating thing is that Subaru isn't able to tell her how, yet that shouldn't make him be entitled to things above himself. Hard to explain but that's basically it.

You have been told about the creature in passing, Whilhelm told Subaru first time he left for Emilia that he needs to take a detour because on the shortest path there have been sightings of the White Whale, but this time Subaru took the fastest route so he can reach the manor faster before the Witch Cultists, and ... well, they ran into the White Whale.
The voice when Subaru froze and that big monster when he got beheaded were both Puck.

Subaru was feeling himself after helping with the maebeasts in the village and how “heroic” he was and so it lead to him being more cocky and less critical of the different situations
The thing is, when Subaru tells a person about the future i.e his/her death like what you said "I saw you die" the witch stops time and crushes the person's heart who heard about the future therefore killing the person.
Man I wasn't lying about this show. It literally only gets better in all aspects that you've seen so far.

Well, there are several interpretations for that, even Subaru tells us why he believe she told him that, something like "to look like crazy and so that she didn't have to take responsability for anything", and that was exactly what he was trying to apply in episode 15. Of course, that doesn't mean what he thought was correct, but it is interesting to bring that up now.
