Samson C02 Review / Test (vs. M5, sE7, KM184)

- Today I review a budget pair of small diaphragm condenser and each of these mics costs $50. The microphone has a relatively high self noise which can be a problem if you're recording quiet sound sources or recording at great distances. The low end leaves a bit to be desired, and it comes across more mid focused with a grainy upper mid and treble region.

DO NOT contact anyone on Telegram that is claiming to be me. I am not giving anything away. They are scammers trying to steal your money and data.
I sure love my vintage budget Samson microphones. Can't wait for the Q9u re-review in 2042.
After watching, and how I have grown personally I feel like you but every point on the head. Though it is fun thinking I have known you for THAT long. Appreciate You Bandrew, keep up the work!
The man has delivered! Sir. You have engaged my sub and like.
Man, I love your music tests
That is the first time that I ever heard an acoustic stereo mic configuration. It sounded amazing, and really did bring it to life just like you said
Lovely aesthetics. I somehow really dig that simple background arrangement, even combined with the lower quality of the camera - I think they convey some welcome modesty about not trying to impress anyone with some super gear set (and since it sounds perfectly adequate, it's all good in the end). I honestly applaud these low-fi experiments.
Love all your videos! Besides being very entertaining, they've been incredibly helpful in figuring out what to get.
Thank you so much Ed. I'm really happy to know the videos have helped make an informed decision! Happy recording.
I love everything about this review. You are the best.
Congrats again and again!!! I hope that someday you will review the CM4 by Line Audio. Insane quality mic. For me among the greatest sdc's available right now. I think you will fall in love with it's natural and warm frequency response.
Ohh yeah! I own two cm4 and two Om1!
I LOVE the CM4s. I have a pair of them and I can't believe how good they are.
Just want to add my vote for the CM4 as well...I own a pair and am very happy with them. Hope you can review them sometime!
genuinely surprised by how much I liked these. also, this was one of the best demo songs, great job!
Loved the stereo mic demo on the acoustic!
Damn i have been waiting for this thanks Bandrew!!!
Computer monitors didn't exist, I can confirm. We were playing Warcraft by listening to beeps and looking at perforated paper.
Lovely review, Bandrew. Thank you.
The review I so needed! Thanks so much
Really happy to know it helped. Thank you for watching.
The C02s have been my daily driver for several years, but I'm always eyeballing those KM-184s as an upgrade. That said, I'd love to see you do a review of the Warm Audio WA-84s and compare those to the 184s and these C02s.
Thanks so much for this review and the stellar channel!
Check out the se7 he is also using for this comparsion. Its incredibly good for the Price of 110.- Qualitywise very close th the neumanns!
I really was impressed with the SE, I think I may get one of those really soon!
These were lovely on drum overheads, hi hats, acoustic and string pickup on bass. Yes I once used it on the frets of an electric bass to add that slappy sound to a bass player once hahaha
ive had one of these since 2019 its pretty good!
Love the shout out to The Descendants!!! So, what would be good dialogue mics in the budget range that are a step up from the Samson Co2? Maybe teh Rode M5s and / or the sE Electronics sE7???
Stellar review!!
Love Samson and I love this mic in particular, but I don't have any use for two of them. A great small-diaphragm condenser.
"all metal shaft" I started to giggle and it sounded like maybe you were choking back a touch of laughter yourself. Vintage video with the vintage audio was good fun!
I'd love to see you review more low cost SDC's, such as the Avantone CK-1 and the MXL 67N and see how they compare. Is it worth a little more $ for these over the Samson C02 ?
maybe not the best for general usage considering its noise, but samson also sells these in a package of drum mics, which are (i believe) the perfect application for this mic, as drum overhead microphones
Found a set for $75 bucks used. Totally worth it. Samson did really well with these little guys.
Would definitely be interested in a full sE7 review - I think they're my favourites for the price
I will be doing one on the sE7's in the future. They sound fantastic for the price.
I think that's the best one I've heard in your untreated room :)
The madman finally did it !
There absolutely is good reason to have a super/hypercardioid mic on a desk boom arm - in my case I've been able to arrange things so that the sound from the keyboard, mouse, and desktop speakers all fall within the mic's null.
I had the pleasure of meeting the Descendents, and Bill Stevenson. Bill is such a great guy. He gave me all kinds of pointers and replied to emails from me when I was in high school circa 2002. I found his email online and asked him a bunch of stupid questions. I later apologized for this in 2014 when I got to talk to him at the filmage movie premiere. About a year later Flag warmed up at the rehearsal studio my band also played at in Minneapolis. They signed my first 4 years record.
I never thought I'd see the day
Please work an AT4053b into your small diaphragm condenser tests. It's my current favorite and I'd sure like to hear how it sounds in your tests.
Can you do a review of the Lauren la120 v2? I’ve heard great things about this stereo set of pencil condensers.
I thought about buying the CO2s but that noise floor worries me. I've worked in broadcast radio for years, so a quiet mic is important to me. However, at home i use an SM58 for podcast recording and an old GT55 (Groove Tube) Condenser mic.
Do you think I like the CO2? What's a better deal next level up?
SDCs stands for?
Hello, I've been at a crossroads lately trying to decide if buying a clone of a U87 would be a good idea. I've researched Beezneez, Warm audio, Serrano, Stam Audio, and advanced audio. Have you ever used the u87 clone from advanced audio? I'd love to know your thoughts on it. I've been using an AKG 214 for over 7 years and want to expand upon my it.
I bought a pair of these to replace the overhead audience mics at my church. They were using two Shure SM58s, which didn't work for that purpose. I feel these have improved the sound for the streaming.
Nice video. Would this be too touchy/grainy for a crowd mic? If so, what would be the best next best thing? Thanks!
You should absolutely do a review of the Line Audio CM4. amazing SDC made in Sweden by a one man operation.
I would love to see your take on T-bone's SC 140, as I am looking forward to getting one for indoor dialogue :) Really appreciate your videos, my man 🤍
EDIT: Also, I really got interested on both Rode M5 and SE Electronics SE7, so a review on those would be highly appreciated :)
And would you do now the behriger c2 please? which is even chaper and looks like kinda good?
I have a Samson C02 as well as a Q2U. And I think, as Bandrew said, they're 100% functioning. I had recorded a podcast episode or two with with C02, and I think that was just alright. And I also used it in online conferences or classes during the pandemic. It did serve the purpose as long as I realize what it is good at and what it is not.
For users who just look at the specs, they may find the combination of low sensitivity and higher noise floor not very inviting. Or maybe just what Curtis said in his comment of Gerald Undone's video, "I wouldn't choose the CO2 unless you had a super tight budget". Yet I still want to say it depends on the purpose, the setting and the speaker. For some speakers like Curtis or Allen from Sound Speeds or Bronson from Audio Hotline, C02 may bring up the issue of excessive sibilance. However, speakers with deep, boomy voice like Gerald Undone or Mike from Booth Junkie may find C02 useful to reduce the lower frequency a bit even when they're speaking up close. The noise may increase the need for EQ or deesser or post-production. Yet no doubt C02 is a very useful and versatile mic in many use cases.
Anyway, I'm so glad to see Bandrew review this mic. This is just another perfect example of using budget-friendly tools to create fantastic content. Just like that famous quote from the newer Top Gun movie, "It's not the plane. It's the pilot."
i love the truth you give
Hahahaha, love the vintage angle. Brilliant!
Awesome review as always! Could you do a budget pencil condenser *shootout between the *Behringer C-2, Rode M5, Samson C02, Presonus PM-2 and MXL CR21 please? :D
Nice. I am also currently comparing. A pro review comparison would be nice.
Have the following on my list: Pronomic SCM-1 and Presonuc PM-2. The pronomic gets nice reviews from the comments. The MXL is new to me on the comparison list.
Which one did you buy?
@@niasboiii I've used the MXL CR21. They are fantastic mics, but without a side by side comparison with others around their price done properly by a pro reviewer like Bandrew, it is hard to gauge their actual level
would love to see the presonus PM-2's!
Why no MXL 991 in the mic comparisons? Did you get rid of it?
this whole video feels like a troll and i love it. even bandrew cant hold back laughing at "shaft" 1:34 🤣🤣🤣
What about drum overheads? or micing cymbals?
What microphone in $100-$250 range would you recommend for indoor dialogue in not treated rooms?
Currently I'm looking at RODE NT5 and Oktava MK012.
Samson C02 sound is very bad IMO, very harsh and artificial.
Mic will be conneted to Tascam DR05X
Do most small diaphragm condensers have bad plosive issues?
Running up hill both ways.
You needed a catchphrase. Now you got one. Love it. Own it. Do it.
I've been using them for years as overheads. They're not great, but do just fine for demos.
I also used them for gang vocals in a pretty distant XY pattern with a hardcore band. Great to have for shennanigans like this because of the roll off in the lows.
please do a mke 600 review!!!
Jesus Christ, your 'hello, Neumann' thingy is so annoying🤣 Nice reviews tho, always fun to watch😀
As a huge fan of They Might Be Giants, I rather enjoyed your singing. Great comparisons!
The Samson C02H is different? from samson c02
So, let's talk now seriously we all want some Golden Age Premier mics reviews, especially GA8000 and ELAM 251, pleeease!
Cool comparisson. Finally it all comes down to how they fit in the mix and how they react to EQs and stuff. The cheap mics might sound good alone but as soon as you try to fit them into a mix, the expensive ones will show all the frequencies and the richness of overtones they deliver ......
I have two Samson CO1‘s.
I am shocked how good they are .
what about Austria Audio cc8?
I love the samson c02 mics but every set I've ever owned has had horrible noise.
Now we are still waiting for a review of the Oktava MK-012-01🙂
I have heard some good recordings made with those. They are super noisy though.
Are Descendents the inspiration for your name?
They’re also my fav band. Lol
That song did not have to go THAT HARD 🔥
Ok, and what about Rode NT3? 🙂
Why sounds better in the untreated room?
Stereo micing the acoustic guitar really brings it to life.
Those mics sound painfully sharp on electric guitar though.
Thank you
FINALLY!
Do you know what would be super helpful? One giant video that contains a mega comparison of a huge swath of microphones. That way, I can just tap on each section and really get a feel for each microphone all within the same video.
I thought that including 5 - 14 comparisons per video was sufficient. Haha. Apparently not. Maybe I'll do it eventually but it sucks a big bag to produce something like that.
@@PodcastageHaha. No worries you don’t have to. It’s just that you’re uniquely positioned and have the resources to be able to make such a video.
Maybe if you wanted to tone it down a bit, there are specific microphones I am interested in hearing back to back, possibly also in a music test or untreated room scenario. Se8, behringer b5, lct 440, wa-47jr, ae5100, akg c3000, nt1, ae5400, e 965, se4400, kms 105, ut twin87, ls-208, ksm32, sE t2, wa87, at4050, wa-251, dpa 4018v, wa-8000, mojave ma-200, clarion fc-357, 023 bomblet, tlm 107, tlm 193, dpa 2015, tlm 49, earthworks sr30, lct940, chandler tg, tlm67, u87, schoeps cmc 641, schoeps v4 u, mojave ma-1000, at5040, sm7b, behringer t1
Great budget pencil ✏️ mic but at this point I'm using Octava 012 mic for my overhead.
I tried the Samsons side-by-side with the Behringer c2 mics and the sE8 mics. The Samsons were the worst, with the Behringers having a pretty decent sound.
I already have them on order and will be testing and reviewing those as well.
@@BandrewScott Awesome!
I have the Behringer C2s and have found them to be pretty good as well.
The C2s are pretty nice. the sE8 is a definite bump above the sE7.
At 8:41 I yelled out 'STEREO PAIR!' in triumph. These sound really great in stereo.
That thing catches plosives like crazy you gotta shot gun. It sideways sort of like you have it proper mic technique
Dot matrix?
In 2003 the video quality 4:3 full HD??? OMG!!! 😄
I have these mics. I didn't like them for overheads on my drums. I bought the e614 and they sound waaaaay better.
If somebody invented a low noise, Samson CO2, we would have the best mic in history.
I've had a few samson mics and can't believe I never got one of these. This is pretty damn good.
@The Caring Adolf Hitler should work fine
I wish Bandrew compared this to the Behringer B-5, it’s also a fantastic mic
It is a very modifiable mic. Even electronically.
I liked the sE7 the most out of all the mics. I'm not sure what it was. I just thought it sounded clean.
The sE7 is a great mic.
Welp, it took you long enough. I tip my hat to you sir.
These are really good on drums, believe it or not.
That's amazing to hear. Thanks for sharing this so the next person who picks up a pair can experiment. Hope you have a great day.
very fucking informative. well done
What are these comments about winning a Manley reference mic?
Scammers.
These are good.. the sE's were great.
Yeah the SE’s are great sounding mics.
THIS is why we love Bandrew. hahaha
Great cheap starter mic for anyone interested in audience recording concerts. Never had an issue running them.
In 2003 you should test how the mic rejects joystick noise ;)
Me I was that somebody! Lol FINALY!
What pop filter was that? It did one hell of a job.
HAKAN P110. But there’s som DIY videos out there that found some pond filter that is as effective for a fraction of the cost.
@@Podcastage Thanks. You are awesome and love the videos, always entertaining and educational... but sometimes my wallet hates them.
Why is the video jittery?
The video 24 fps as opposed to the 30 that I normally film in. Also filmed on a $25 webcam that was released in 2010, the Logitech C270.
you my friend are a great straight forward reviewer. thank you a lot, ill probably lose 2,700 pesos soon.
Thank you for the kind words. Happy recording.
@@Podcastage I have to ask bro, you think getting the OEM version is okay?
Is it just me or does the SE7 kinda beat the heck out of the C02? Smoothness and low-mid representation sounds much better to me.
I bought these to boom and they’re better than my shotguns. Just a better mic for the situation, for my low budget.
I've had computer monitors since 1990. So I do believe they existed in 2003 - even in America.
By the way, the self noise is to a large extent handled very well by RUclips. So I'll have to take your word (sorry for giggling) for it.
Wait...we had computer monitors in 2003? Why was I given all data via paper print outs?
Danke!
Thank you so much Rainer! You are so generous and I appreciate you so much.
By these terms I'm going to breach antique soon 😂
I wonder if it even asmr🧐
