- Somehow one of the first flies I learned to tie and fish managed to slip through the cracks and never make it into one of my videos. The Grey Hackle Peacock was a staple in my fly box in the early days of my fly fishing journey. This pattern is a generic style pattern meant to imitate multiple species of mayflies. If I has to make a fly box for someone wanting to get into swinging wet flies, this fly is one that would definitely be in the box. It's simple to tie and catches fish. What more could you ask for in a fly.
If you need the materials for this fly or others please check out our website, www.holsingers... for all your fly tying needs. If you have and questions please feel free to drop a comment below or send me an email at holsingersflyshop@gmail.com and I will be sure to get back to you. Thanks for watching. -Shawn

Thanks for sharing Shawn. Simple is always good. I really appreciate the “keep working” comment. It’s good to see that things happen to other more experienced tyers than myself. Enjoy all your videos.
I always leave those things in because everyone does them. That is a very common thing if you start from the tip of the feather and don't get back on the feather shaft for enough. Thanks for watching
Hi from Kansas City 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes
Back in the day (1950s) , I'd be panfishing something like this fancy only for the body I would cut out some cotton tail face hair, make a loop for it and wind it up the size 10 gold hook , then put in a pheasant feather hackel on the front at the eye. This fly still has been working on all fish.
Thanks for your time and knowledge .I appreciate your skills and views and enjoy your videos. I really like the swinging tailed With the 633 hook. Good health for you and your's 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes
Great one Shawn! I love the background info in your intro. And I'm with you, I like this better without the tail. 🙂
Thanks Matt. I never fished it with the tail. This is the way Jack always wanted me to tie them for him. I just don't see the point other than an attractor. Without the tail I think it becomes a great generic pattern and very imitative. We need to get together sometime and fish.
You are absolutely right about this pattern, Shawn. It is a fish catcher!
Because if the married wing, it's not a simple fly, but I like to fish a "trout fin."
That's my euro nymph mentality seeping through. Quick easy flies just catch fish. The married wings look good but I don't think they are necessary.
Thanks for sharing Shawn. Brought back memories of how I was taught, swinging 3 wets- gold ribbed hares ear, picket pin, and a lead wing coachman. Yours reminded me of that lead wing . The other I learned to tie and fish was the cow dung. Back then in late 60’s we didn’t have all the dyed materials and synthetics like today. I can remember the older guys that taught me using Rite dye on furs !
Thanks for the comment. I've never fished the cow dung pattern, I know it just never tried it. I do like fishing the picket pin as a streamer. I never got into fishing three flies though, I always just fish two.
Thank you for a simple fly that should catch fish in my back yard of New Hampshire. I like the fact that different material can be used to get the same results.
It will definitely work in your area, give it a try. Most definitely substitute materials. It drives me nuts when guys come in the shop and feel they have to have the exact material in the original. Like the fish can tell the difference or care whether you used a partridge or a chicken feather. Thanks for watching
Thanks for showing the video blemishes and all. It’s good for beginning tyers to see that even experienced tyers can make mistakes.
That is why I leave them in there. I mainly gear my videos towards the beginning tiers. Things like that happen to everyone and you need to know how to fix it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for tying an old classic
No problem, I have to admit I'm partial to the classics.
it's a great fly everyone should have in their box.
You are exactly right Frank!!! Such a Great beginners tie that really works
Awesome fly awesome job Shawn!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot glad you like it
My father and I were partial to a picket pin in large sizes, by today’s standards, 12 to 8 2xl. It was almost a streamer. Thanks for the video.
I like fishing the Picket Pin as a streamer as well. That is a great old pattern.
Nice. I tie and fish old syle wrt flies, winged and spiders. I love them. In addition to being effective and pleasant to fish, they have elegant character. :=)
I just bought a new rod and have been "forcing myself" to swing wets more often. I can catch fish anytime I want on nymphs but have so much fun when I catch them swinging wets. It's just so satisfying
Gorgeous looking fly Shawn
Definitely going to try this one
My favorite is a snipe and purple
Thanks for the video Shawn
Thanks Dave. Never tried the snipe and purple. Thanks for watching!
@@HolsingersFlyShop instead of snipe I use a dove feather, something gray
The rainbows love it
@@davehall2160 been a while since I’ve used dove.
I love it. Great simple fly. I like to use bubble emergers using either under feathers from partridge, grouse, pheasant or hen feathers when I don’t have game bird feathers or CDC. The air bubble they create is also deadly. Thanks
In addendum, some of the old school wet flys that use duck or goose feathers for wings make pretty flies, but are not always effective as some of these wet flies that just use hackle. I like tying the pretty flys for shadow boxes, but have only caught a few fish on them.
I will agree with you the winged soft hackles look great but the unhinged ones just pain catch fish. I'm one who would rather tie less and fish more. I don't tie to many winged wet flies to fish. I will tie them every now and then just for the practice. And I will also agree with you on the bubble effect. I have been fishing the Iris Caddis I did a video of a couple months ago a lot lately and have been having huge success with it. Thanks for the comment!
@@HolsingersFlyShop I tied your iris caddis. Made a few. Need to try them. That was a good pattern too
Love to fish the Alder Wet Fly in size #14 & #16! It’s a Killer during the Grannom Caddis Hatch!
I learned of the Alder a few years ago on a fishing trip to Penns Creek and have fished it since then. I will agree with you on that one. That's a great pattern, especially here in central Pa.
Thanks for sharing, I love fishing soft hackles! Question, what body material do you use for the Grey Hackle Red? These are a couple I've not heard of before, but I do fish Leisenring Spider, basically a GRHE.
For the grey hackle red I just use red thread now with a gold rib. For years I used a red dyed rabbit dubbing but it’s very easy to make the body too thick so I just use 140 denier thread and build up a slight body with the thread
